Just a couple responses.

1- I haven't noticed that particular problem with message tracking. phpbb has some quirks with cookies, but those seem to work out with tweaking.

2- I have a simple mod for my board that allows for user searching on several criteria.

It's hard to beat free even if there were a wide margin between the products. Infopop charges an arm and a leg, and it's hard to justify that expense.
