I'm gonna guess that the Thompsons are not your average family, but this by itself doesn't strike me as callous. If somebody with HT's, uh, "twist" has been deliberating about suicide for a while, what are you supposed to say? Sounds like she didn't like the idea.

I am grateful to Thompson for, if nothing else, Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72. He is unequalled. Pretty shabby, though, exercising that final selfish impulse with relations around. Have the decency to go to the barn, leave a note, call it in, leave it in the hands of people who get paid to be a little detached. Oh, well, at least he didn't flinch.
