It's pretty much the same here in the US. Thats why I find the two redesigns of the $20 in the past several years amusing. The big reasons they say they redesigned the bills is to thwart counterfeiters. But yet nothing is in the way of stopping counterfeiters from just printing up $20 bills from 1975 or something.
I am hoping the new $1 coin becomes more popular then the last one, but I doubt it will. Since it seems the government doesn't want to phase out the bills, people are still going to be more likely to use the bills over the coins. At least most places are used to the $1 coins though, as I have paid with qitue a bit of food with them, since vending machines at work dispenses them as change instead of tons of quarters.
