I had a similar situation with an old version of Logic Audio when upgrading Windows versions and audio adapters. I was saved by ASIO 4 All. If there's a chance you can configure cakewalk to use an ASIO driver, then that might help.

Do explore Audacity, though, and also explore Reaper.
