Seeing in Dan's original post that it's a 2017 VW... I have to relate some of my experiences with a 2017 car stereo as well. Mine is on my 2017 Accord EX-L. The stereo is a Clarion model rebranded as Honda.
Its bluetooth implementation is buggy, as is the Apple CarPlay implementation. It behaves like Alpha or Beta software, with frequent hangs and crashes. Bluetooth doesn't always work, and when it fails I have to turn off the car to get the head unit to reboot. The CarPlay screen sometimes hangs completely with a frozen image on the screen (particularly troublesome when running nav apps), also necessitating a reboot. Sometimes it doesn't switch back and forth from bluetooth and carplay correctly. There are some very rookie mistakes in its UI, such as failing to implement Pause, FastForward, or Rewind in the steering wheel controls (you can press "next track" but you can't hold down the button for FF, and Pause requires that you dig two levels into a menu).
What I'm saying is... It might just be that 2017 vintage of OEM stereo is a bad one for cell phone integration.
