Personally, if I were king of the world, I'd standardize all dates in yyyy/mm/dd fashion so that a standard alphanumeric sort would always result in properly ordered dates.

I use dates of that form in all the release notes and stuff. I've been writing things that will be read on both sides of the Atlantic recently and it is the only format that is completely unambiguous to everyone.

Besides, YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS.FFF is ISO standard :)
