I will have pricing next week for a hard drive group buy. If you are interested, please post here (do NOT e-mail me on this yet). I would like to gauge interest in different sizes (10GB, 20GB, etc.) and brands.
Thanks,
-Tony

I'm assuming that you mean laptop hard drives? Since this is the BBS for the empeg car, after all.

Weird...
I just logged on to post a "WTB: 48 or 60GB Drive" thread. So put me down as very interested for either of those sizes.

Hi Tony, I would be interested in either (1) 30gb, or (2) 60gb. Depending on price of course, and the outcome of my raid thread

Interested in up to 3 60GB drives.
BTW, Newegg.com has IBM 60GB for $332 (much better than what is listed on Pricewatch!).

I would be interested in a 20GB drive, but only if the price were ridiculously (i.e., well under market value) low.

I think Pricewatch refers you to Newegg.com last time I was looking and unfortunately I just bought another hdd ($118.00 for a 30GB) just two days ago, damn the luck. My 12GB empeg drive was critically low, down to 20mb.

Just received said drive via Fedex regular Newegg.com is fast. Be forewarned from them the drive is very bare bones only drive inside of antistatic bag {NO jumpers NO screws} inside of a FedEx box that's 20 times it's size (with appropiate stuffing). The drive is installed with only one hitch (main drive connector fell apart trying to remove the glue:( conn. clips break very easily) No problem I hope in the future with such, since I just put conn. back on and melted the conn back together with a soldering iron. Works now but the real test will be in the rugged SUV enviroment (read not a cushy car type SUV) it spends 98% of time.
Thanks to the well laid out drive upgrade section at Rio.org if you follow to the letter there will be no problems.

how much was the drive after shipping? Pricewatch now shows the price including shipping so the ones posted by brad include shipping (at least i assume so) what dose newegg.com charge? and are newegg.com refurbed drives?

Glad to know that a cable can be fixed... I tore one of mine too and they are expensive after shipping for a new one.

Well I didn't exactly tear it, the middle or primary connector fell into two pieces, the retainer clip poped off. I did have to carefully realign the existing holes where the pins bit into the cable. I think I probably just got lucky. I've had it in the vehicle a couple of times now and no problems with vibration losing connection.
BTW- How much does a cable cost, just in case and where did you get one?

$118.00 free shipping and the drives are new.
But like I said you get nothing more than a drive in a anti-static bag, NO screws (I used 2 from the old drive as suggested but not encouraged, by the FAQ) and NO jumpers (I jerry rigged a full sized drive jumper to work). I know, vibration will probably get me all around but the RTV should work to hold everything together...............................shouldn't it?.

No problem (with me). You recovered nicely. It is just considered poor etiquette to sell things in someone else's post. Starting a new thread is best.

I didn't realize that this was somone selling from his own business... I thought group buy was a bunch of memebers getting together to get a better price, didn't know it was someones business till I read some other posts about the original poster selling EMPEGS as well...my bad... I made a new thread.

I'm trying to get better prices on these drives but all of my sources are on their 2nd or 3rd round of quotes. Unless something comes up, the prices I have will be no better than the prices that can be found elsewhere on the internet.

If you like www.pricewatch.com, you might want to use www.pricegrabber.com as well, they offer a similar service. All I can tell you is buyer beware... there are a lot of shady people that have "one time buys" and "must call on phone and specifically state pricewatch price". Also watch because some items are refurbs.

It is nearly impossible to beat Googlegears prices. They can actually sell some items at a loss to steal business from other people. I don't understand why they do that because most people who "look for the lowest price" aren't going to stay loyal to Googlegear if the can find something cheaper at another site. Googlegear kinda reminds me of Walmart...

I noticed you can buy 20 packs of the drives for a bit cheaper... group buy? not worth all that to save 7 bucks or whatever.
