i have a damaged mark II unit.
everything works but there is no audio output. i have tried numerous thing to attempt to diagnose the problem.
i am wondering whether or not i should part it out or sell
it as a broken unit. i don’t know if the warranty is out or not.
so my question is what would somebody pay for the individual peices verses the whole unit?
thanks for your feedback

Did you, at any time, attempt to contact support to help diagnose the problem or to get the player repaired?

they told me to send it in. that was back in march
dont ask me how but i could not find the time until now to even think about messing with this thing. i have had one major catastrophe after another for the last 7 months
so rather than bitch about my misfortunes i have decided to be indecisive about what to do

Is it your only unit? That's too bad if it won't make any sound and it's your only unit. Because the thing is just too cool when it works...
In any case, to answer your first question, it's much more valuable as a whole, repairable unit than as a pile of miscellaneous parts. If you just want to get rid of it and let someone else hassle with the repair, then post on the For Sale forum or even on Ebay and see what offers you get. Those who really really want an empeg and are willing to take the risk that it can be repaired and are willing to pay to repair it will do so gladly.

$100 is risky,
but a lot of people would take that risk,
especially if the screen works.

Greetings!
If your offer to sell it is serious, I would be willing to take it whole. $250 plus shipping if it has the sled and remote with it. PM me if you are interested. Tony is right, though. It is really a great piece of hardware. If you do not wish to repair, one of us would be glad for the opportunity.

You don't even have to have the audio repaired, assuming that the player is still decoding audio and outputting an I2S signal, you could just add digital out to it and use it as a home player or add a DAC to your car. Such a mod would probably be cheaper than the repair anyway. That's a pretty tempting option for me actually, but if Paul will pay $250 for it, let him have it!

Greetings!
Well, my intent was to basically try to diagnose what the problem was and fix it. Assuming that it would cost (random estimate) $200 to ship and fix, $450 for a complete empeg wouldn't be that bad.
Worst case, it is always handy to have the extra components, in the event that it was not repairable (very unlikely, in my estimation). As for parts alone, the display board must be worth (more random estimates) about $170, the sled $60 and the remote $20.

Your warranty is for a year after the purchase, so if I were you I'd check to see if it's still under warranty and get it fixed fo free.

Since he says it's a mark2 and not a mark 2a, his warranty is definitely expired.
However, that still wouldn't stop me from contacting support to get my unit fixed...

Actually, based on his previous posts, I think it might be a Mark2A. There were some comments when the disk was causing problems (cable issues), and that the RioCar logo was locking up...

Ah? Didn't know about that. If that is the case then forget I said anything, because then he might stil have one month of warranty left.

Go for it Paul, if he would take $250 for it I think it would be well worth that just for the parts, if I had more money to throw around I would have offered more than $100 (I was serious by the way). Like you said the screen alone is worth it plus the remote/sled.

Greetings!
I haven't heard anything yet, so I do not know if it is really for sale. I am serious, too. I think it is completely repairable, and probably not for that much of a cost other than (worst case) shipping to the UK and back.
I hope he is able get it fixed and use it himself, but (if not) I am more than willing to do it.
I knew I should have picked up more of them during the fire sale, but I thought that I would have plenty... If I were to get it repaired, I don't know if I would upgrade it (digital out, button hack and disk), keep it myself, offer it for sale or store it for future use. In any case, I will burn that bridge if I ever get to it.

I will keep that in mind. Since I haven't heard anything yet, I can only assume that it is either not available, not for sale at that price, or that the offer has not been read yet. If I hear anything more, I will post.

im sorry guys i go in and out. school is killing me right now.
i have no sled and no remote for this unit. they were both stolen when my car was stolen.
the unit is a Mark IIA. it might still be under warranty, but it's getting close. and i dont have the recepit that shows when i bought it. im not selling the empeg because i dis-like it. i love the thing but i think that my climate is not suitable for one, considering all the problems that i have had. i dunno maybe i just got a lemmon. ither way i was so disappointed to have all that power at my finger tips and then have it all taken away when i got into my car and fired her up to find something else had gone wrong. i will replace it with something similar, i just dont know what.

Greetings!
I don't know where you will find something similar, though. Given everything that you went through, I can understand your concerns. Well, if you want to sell it without the sled and remote, I will offer $170 plus shipping. If you are interested, please let me know.
Sorry that things have been working out so badly.

It's probably not outputting I2S - either that or the I2C is dead. Both I've seen; I2C is usually either a dead LVX04 or a bad pull-up resistor (the respacks sometimes have bad solder joints). I2S problem is usually a solder issue or a bad PEEL - we've got loads here though.
I2C problem is obvious if you look at a boot log, you'll see loads of I2C failures and the volume control will be v.e.r.y slow due to all the error printing.
I've only ever come across one dead DSP, and I have no idea why it died. We've got spares here, though.
