Hi all.

Last week I installed a new motherboard for my PC. I used to use an Intel i850 mobo, now I'm using an Aopen with i845PE chipset.

I used to download the photos I took with my 7650 to my PC with the Nokia PC suite software via USB. This used to work flawlessly.

But now with this new mobo and PC being completely re-installed with win2000, that PC suit software refuses to run correctly.
Everything from the software works except -you guessed it- the file transfer for photos. When I click on "file transfer for images" the program just freezes. Well it doesn't freeze (at least not according to my program manager), but the hourglass remains there indefinitely. I have to close the program with the three-finger-salute. (then the program manager says the program doesn't react anymore and will be closed down)

I used to do this via infrared, so I thought the problem might have been that this new mobo uses USB 2.0 ports instead of USB 1.1. For this reason I also purchased a Blluetooth dongle : same problem. (which makes me believe it's this POS software that Nokia provides with the phone that is the culprit)

I know some users of this board are using this phone too. Do you guys have any idea what the problem might be? Nokia support was -surprise surprise- about as helpful as a sledgehammer would be. The guy on the phone insisted that for a PC I had to email the photo's to myself OR have a laptop with infrared or Bluetooth enabled. When I replied I have both infrared and Bluetooth for my PC he said : "yeah, but those are USB dongles, those won't work". When I said they've worked for 3 months he still insisted that they didn't work. Talk about braindead. So I gave up the idea of the Nokia helpdesk there and then.

When I originally installed the crap Nokia software it would refuse to work. It would think that none of the applications inside the PC suite were installed. In the end I had to uninstall it and delete all the crud it spread all over the place and reinstall. It's worked fine since.

Sorry that I couldn't be more specific!

What do you mean, delete all the crud ? I uninstalled the version I had on my PC and re installed the version that is online (figuring it might be an updated version) but still no go. Does this PC software leave other crud behind?

It's even gotten even worse since now the PC suite won't run AT ALL anymore.

I really hate this. Is there ANY way to get those photos of the Phone, preferably by using another program than PC suite? (except emailing them to myself, that's not a option : my GSM provider doesn't support that yet, and even if he would, I wouldn't want to go about it that way at about 1$/pic. - judging by other operator prices)

It left random bits in the registry. I doubt it was necessary to remove it all but I did it anyway.

The version on the Nokia website isn't very good. The CD version works much better. Lots of people have complained about the web version not working at all and crashing a lot. No idea why there a difference between the two.

Have a look at the forums on AllAboutSymbian.

OMG! That did it! After removing that crap in the registry the damn thing actually works. It's still using the web version, but heck, it works!

Thanks a lot for your help!

The power button on my Nokia was playing up. It's getting really hard to turn it on. Therefore I made a backup and replaced the phone. I did actually attempt a restore and it *seemed* to have worked. But now that I've got a new phone and tried to restore I've found out that it doesn't seem to backup SMS's or settings properly. So be warned! I've had a look and a few other people have the same problems.
I really do dislike the crap software Nokia bundle with their phones. All of the Ericsson's I've have had vastly superior PC software and were much better integrated.

This doesn't surprise me. Having dealt with their crappy software too, nothing surprises me anymore, except the huge profit they made this year. I really don't understand this because most other brands have more technological advanced models.
Then again, I fell for it too. I first bought a Ericsson T68i, but I couldn't get used to the menu structure after having used a Nokia 8810 for years. So I traded it in for this 7650. Except for the screen quality everything about the T68i was better. But the Nokia seems more 'intuitive' to me since it's a Nokia. I should've sticked with the Ericsson, this is a lesson for the future. Actually I'm still looking at their forthcoming P800 model. Seems it has everything the Nokia 7650 has (incl the camera, and the Symbian OS) but it's probably a helluva lot better.
Thanks for the warning !

Incidentally, for future reference, you can just open the photo on the phone and choose either Send by Infrared or Send by Bluetooth.

This will send it to any (Windows) PC with IR or Bluetooth - the transfer is handled by the windows drivers, not by the Nokia suite. I don't think you can send more than one picture at a time, but it's a good emergency measure.
