Does anyone know of any "Must have" song lists out there on the web? I would like to hear some new or different music sometimes and I get bored with the same old stuff.

I was browsing around and there is a ton of junk on the search engines. I was kind of looking something that, is perhaps, sorted by year or genre.

Has there even been a thread posted on this BBS with a list of "must have" songs for people to add to their collections?

This was must have albums, not songs but still a good resource:

No problem. I should also tell you that I seem to recall someone compiling a list toward the end of the thread of every album that was mentioned. I don't think it listed how many times various albums appeared, but it was still pretty awesome to look at.

I'm on page 10 of 13. It's not quite what I'm looking for, but it's a good start.

actually I just found something really cool! This is what I am looking for and if anyone else is interested, you can look at people picking their top ten songs of a decade... I was kinda looking for top ten songs of a year, but I can always look at the billboard charts or something

http://www.inthe70s.com/generated/toptensongs.shtml

you can also look at the 80s and 90s too...

That's a very tough one to fill. In order to cover everyone's musical tastes, the list would have to be enormous. I think a better way of going about it could be to start with a genre, then go from there.

Even then, if you asked me which "gunge" rock songs to listen to, I'd probably have a hard time formulating a list. I'd probably end up giving you about 30 songs

Well, that's probably going to reflect pop music tastes of those decades. I suppose that will work, if it's what you're looking for. Your initial statement reflected something MUCH broader. I was thinking all forms of music from all eras, from gregorian chant to jazz fusion

I have a Gregorian Chant album, it's pretty neat... but yeah I guess I would take any list of any songs that people wanted to throw out there...

I'd laid off right now so I have a lot of free time...

A better idea might almost be a ``best songs you've never heard'' list. You're more likely to get, well, stuff you haven't heard, and a more eclectic range.

Having everyone suggest Nevermind isn't really very useful, especially when you already own both a cassette and CD copy of it.

I do tend to think in terms of albums and artists, not songs, but as far as stuff you've never heard, David Wilcox is great if you like folk acoustic stuff. A few cuts off of his "Big Horizon" album have the highest play count on my Empeg. You can check out a few free songs from mp3.com:

http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/154/david_wilcox.html

Also of course is the oft mentioned "Moving Pictures" (album) from Rush, though most of these songs are well known. Still I run into an amazing number of people who've never heard it.

That's what I get for looking at bits for a MAME cabinet to go in the game room.

I guess it is a good job I ordered a new hard disk last week so I will have something to put all those new cds on

Sure:

Smells Like Teen Spirit
In Bloom
Come as You Are
Breed
Lithium
Polly
Territorial Pissings
Drain You
Lounge Act
Stay Away
On a Plain
Something in the Way

Just kidding.

I wasn't being a jerk, BTW, I was just suggesting that if you were searching for stuff, that might be a better option.

Here are some real suggestions, albeit albums, as that's how I think (though I can't guarantee that they'll be ones you haven't heard). They're things that I'm into right now and old favorites.

Afghan Whigs: Black Love
Alaska: Emotions
And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead: Source Tags and Codes
Cake: Fashion Nugget
Cave In: Antenna
The Church: Starfish
Elvis Costello: Armed Forces
The Cure: Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me
Dandy Warhols: Thirteen Tales from Urban Bohemia
Genesis: Duke
The Get Up Kids: Something To Write Home About
Husker Du: Zen Arcade
Foo Fighters: The Color and the Shape
Peter Gabriel: Car/I
Peter Gabriel: Passion
Interpol: Turn on the Bright Lights
Jimmy Eat World: Bleed American/Jimmy Eat World
Local H: As Good As Dead
Jason Loewenstein: At Sixes and Sevens
Longwave: The Strangest Things
Curtis Mayfield: Superfly
Sarah McLachlan: Fumbling Towards Ecstasy (but nothing else by her)
Bob Mould: Workbook
New Order: Get Ready
Nirvana: In Utero
Pavement: Slanted and Enchanted
Liz Phair: Exile in Guyville
Pink Floyd: Meddle
Rival Schools: United by Fate
Sebadoh: harmacy
Smashing Pumpkins: Siamese Dream
Snapcase: Designs for Automotion
Sonic Youth: Daydream Nation
Soul Asylum: Hang Time
The Strokes: This Is It
Sugar: File Under Easy Listening
U2: The Unforgettable Fire
Wilco: Yankee Hotel Foxtrot

Maybe there are one or two things in there you haven't heard.

Here we go, "grunge style":

The well known ones:

Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nivana
Jeremy - Pearl Jam
Would? - Alice In Chains
Black Hole Sun - Soundgarden

Others:
Touch Me I'm Sick - Mudhoney (definitive "grunge" song)

My favorites:
Nearly Lost You - Screaming Trees
Troubled Times - Screaming Trees
Alice Said - Screaming Trees
All I Know - Screaming Trees
Sworn and Broken - Screaming Trees
Dying Days - Screaming Trees (about the deaths of Seattle musicians)
Again - Alice In Chains
Shame In You - Alice In Chains
The Day I Tried to Live - Soundgarden
Like Suicide (original or acoustic) - Soundgarden
Blow Up the Outside World - Soundgarden
Burden in My Hand - Soundgarden
Dusty - Soundgarden
Jesus Christ Pose - Soundgarden
Room a Thousand Years Wide - Soundgarden

Some of those were thrown in because they were more popular, but they're great songs too.

This is a small list, just the biggest and my favorite bands. Check out AMG for more.

ps-I disagree with AMG, which lists Bush, Silverchair, PotUSA, and some others as "Key Artists" in grunge.

Lemon Jelly - Page One
Depeche Mode - Enjoy the Silence
The Pixes - Wheres is my mind
Royksopp - Remind Me
Ladytron - Took her to the movies
Oingo Boingo - Not My Slave
Aphex Twin - Alberto Balsam
Daft Punk - Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger
Thievery Corporation - Focus on Sight
Clinic - Distortion
Pizzicato Five - Catchy
Kenna - Hellbent

And finally, my song of the week: "Soft" by Lemon Jelly.

I just remembered the Massive Attack song I wanted to include: Hymn of the Big Wheel

Yeah, that was me. Woohoo for "Save As... text" and Perl. I didn't think to count album references, but it would have obviously been stacked by Mr. Tony (Rush) Fabris to favour one band in particular...

Oh, nice list, Bitt.
You know, I'm always reluctant to do such things, as I always feel like I'm being obscure and fear getting shot down as being too populist, or being populist and fear getting shot down as being too obscure.

Eh, screw it.

Thanks, though. If you like those, I'd like to hear your suggestions, too.

AIC was all about the harmonizing between the lead vocal parts. They were so damned good at that. I find it funny when current hard rock bands try to do it, and fail miserably. That "Hero" song from the Spiderman soundtrack comes to mind.

That's why I listen to "Shame In You" so much. It's a great, sad song with one of my favorite melodies and great harmony.
