It means you have one working 80GB hard drive, with nothing on it yet (?)

EDIT: actually, there IS something on it.. I just missed the partition check first time I looked. Does it work?

Well, then that is good, that's what it has. But for some reason emplode will not open so I wasn't sure. It keeps giving me that "performing illegal operation" crap.

Mmm.. have you run the diskbuilder .upgrade on that drive to prepare it for Empeg use?

Might as well.. the music partitions /dev/hda4 does not appear to have been completely created on it.

Ouch:
In reply to:

hda4 is mounted.
no room for private writable mapping
error: -12
/dev/hda4: Memory allocation failed while setting up superblock

Basically, it ran out of memory (Mk1 has only 8MB) while trying to create the filesystem for the music partition. The drive is just plain too big for the diskbuilder.

I suppose one might be able to create the filesystem "by hand", with parameters that require less memory. But first, try the Mk2 diskbuilder on it in a mk2 machine (ugh!). Once that succeeds (it will), then install the Mk1 .developer image onto it.

If all that fails, we'll have to do it the "hard way".

Cheers (?)

Ah, I must be the first to try and put an 80GB in the MKl. I'll have to wait until tomorrow night to try and build the disk in the MKll first. I'll update the thread then.

I'm glad to know that it isn't a problem with the hard drive itself.

edit: Thanks for the help Mark

Good idea. That should work. Run the builder with the drive in a Mk2, reapply the mk2 developer upgrade while it's still in the Mk2 so you don't fry whatever disk you plug into the Mk2 afterward, then plug it into the Mk1 and apply developer Mk1 onto it on its first powerup. Tricky, but I think it'll work.

Mark, that was a quick diagnostic. Cool. Nice catch.

Does this not bode well for the Mk1 in terms of upgrades? Or could code tweaks to the mk1 version of the builder image take care of it? As I recall, the builder images are going to need an update to allow bigger than 127gb anyway, maybe we can bribe the right people with curry and/or beer?

Ouch!

Sorry about all the trouble. I have been recommending the 80GB drives - I did not know that they would not build "new, out of the packet" on a Mark 1.

That's ok. I consider it an honor to get to be the first to experiment with getting an 80GB working in the MKl, I like a challenge.

Would it be possible to build a swap partition first and have the builder software be able to key off that? I would think that the partitions themselves can be built easily by the builder code, it is just the new filesystem generation that seems to be locking up.

It would probably require a rebuild of the builder software in order to get it to use swap, though...

A thought...

Oh 'eck. I suppose we have run mkswap by that stage, so we could enable swap for making the music partition.

I'd be worried, though, that a Mark 1 won't have enough memory for the size of database occasioned by 80 or 160 gigabytes of music...

Do you know what the largest size drive that it could handle with the memory that it has?

That would likely depend on the number of files, the amount of compression, etc. From what I have seen, and if this is a good estimate, my 120GB of music only generates a database file of about 2.5MB.

Now, I don't know what other memory is in use, but I would be interesting to find out...

Ah. Laura could have a problem then. A Mark 1 has a total of 2.5M available for caching and database. If the database alone is larger than that, the player will not start. If the database is larger than about 1.75M, there will be so little cache that the player can never spin the disk down.

The immediate limit here is not the number of files (which is currently ZERO when it fails), but the memory that the filesystem maker wants.

By doing the diskbuilder in a Mk2, this step will be avoided, and a subsequent Mk1 consumer image (or developer) .upgrade would complete the install... will probably even work!

THEN the database and file counts become the new limit.

Cheers

Hi, I put a 60gb in my Mark 1 a couple of months ago and ran across this problem. What I did do (and posted about it here) was to just run builder in the Mark II and put the drive back in the M1, apply player, and all is well.

Here's an easy thing to try, if you have not already simply moved the disk to a Mk2 for the diskbuilder step:

Install the Mk1 developer image, with the disk still in the Mk1. This will fail at some point, but ignore it. Then, reboot the player with the serial link hooked up, and hit 'q' or 'control^C' to quit back to a shell prompt.

From the shell prompt, try:

mkswap /dev/hda6
swapon /dev/hda6
mke2fs /dev/hda4
<--- Peter can tell us the exact parameters to use here

Then reboot and see what happens.

Cheers

Well, if they encode everything as WAV or 320cbr, then probably no big deal.

In theory, you can solder 4 more RAM chips onto a Mk1 on the underside, then enable them in the SA1100 and tell linux it has a full 16MBytes. I've not tried it, but it definitely should work. Not sure what the player would make of it, as it wouldn't be expecting a Mk1 to have that much ram...

I've been busy and haven't tried it yet but I should get around to it this weekend. I'll go ahead and try building the drive in the MKll first. As I only have enough songs at the moment to fill a little more than half the space, hopefully the database won't be too big for the memory to handle.

Hugo, in your wildest imaginings, when you were designing the Mark I did you ever think the day would come when people would be trying to cram 80 GB (or even 160 GB) of storage into it?

No, but we did want to allow the player to be fully expanded. The factory didn't like the pads on the bottom of the boards (like the mk1) as they kept getting shorted during flow soldering of the through-hole parts... so we had to take them off for the mk2.

Thinking back, maybe the ring-o-lights is less useful than the option of taking a mk2a to 48Mbytes (6 chips)

By the way, did you get the drive built?
