Here's my new rifle. I got it from www.aimsurplus.com for $320. It's an AK-47 type rifle. It's imported from Romania and is their version of the AK, called the SAR-1.

Yeah
I am don't think that shooting ranges would let you. I'm guessing it was purchased for a collectable not to be fired but I am curious anyway.

I am don't think that shooting ranges would let you. Shooting ranges will let you shoot pretty much anything there, provided they have the setup to allow it safely. I'm guessing it was purchased for a collectable not to be fired Bwahahahaha! /me wipes tears from my eyes. This is d33zy, here. Let's see...

Yeah, shooting ranges. Or out in the country as long as you're not tresspassing.
I'm guessing it was purchased for a collectable not to be fired but I am curious anyway.
It will definitely be fired. It is a legal gun - it's not fully automatic, just semi-automatic. It was manufactured in 2003 in Romania and imported here with 5 parts replaced with US made parts to meet federal regulations (the ATF only allows a certain number of parts per gun to be imported. why? I don't know). It is illegal in California though. They have no right to bear arms in the CA constitution, so they can ban whatever they want.
How long till d33zy shoots the gun
-Never, it's a collectible
-Next month
-This weekend, after he gets some ammo
-Right after work -- he's had the ammo for months, now
-As soon as he's done posting the pics here
-He 'shot his gun' just opening the parcel.
Number 3.

I think it might also be illegal in NJ because of the size of the clip.

I own a Bushmaster AR15 and after the new wears off, it is really kind of boring. I would much rather shoot bolt action rifles (preferably a Winchester .308) to see what kind of groupings I can get. More of a challenge than just blasting away with a semiauto.
If you really want a rifle buy this.

They probably replaced those parts to make it semi-automatic - the original is fully automatic. BTW, a friend in army tells me that this Romanian versions of AK-47 are the worst weapons (from the standpoint of quality of manufacture and material, e.g. barell) he has ever seen... As always, YMMV...

I've got a Mini-14 and it's fun for plinking, but expensive plinking. My two M1 Garands are my favorites. I have an M1-D (sniper version) and a regular issue M1 both from the Civilian Marksmanship Program After you lug this around the range, it gives a newfound respect for what the guys in WWII and Korea had deal with... The M1 is HEAVY by today's firearm standards... One cool thing is you can reference the serial numbers of parts to see what era they were made. One of my receviers is 1943, so it more than likely saw action in WWII. Most of the parts on mine are Korean War era, though. And for open sights, incredible accurracy with these guns...

I put this scope on my AR15. The tritium reticle glows at night. Calibrated for the .223 out to 800 yards (bullet drop scale).
Dirt cheap to shoot at 1000 rds for $80.

I have a mint Model 1917 (very HEAVY) my parents bought from the Montgomery Ward in about 1950 as army surplus. Where can I find out what year it was made?
Thanks

Nice gun, my SKS (Chinese AK rip-off) is one of my favorite guns.
You can get amo at some guns shows pretty cheap. You can burn up a lot with a 30 round clip, but man its fun.
I got some NATO rounds (I think) that had a steel center covered by copper. Those will shoot through a 3/8 inch steel plate like a drill! It would almost go through ½ inch.

I don't know anything about the (?Enfield?)1917, rec.guns newsgroup people might be able to help. It's just that there is so much documentation on, and so many people into the M1 Garand that the info is readily available. I would think there is lots about the 1917 as well just gotta find the people...
That's interesting that Montgomery Ward sold Army surplus guns in the 50's, though...
EDIT Try this site I saw a few threads where someone can give info on dates made.

I haven't done much shooting since I left AZ. Out there you just go to BLM land and blast away. Texas is mostly private land, and I can't see paying up to $12/hr to shoot high-power rifles at a 50 yard indoor range... So I go fishing...
Though a scope like that would be cool, I have the regular old Bushnell 3x8 on my Mini-14. The M1-D has an M-83 scope. and all the cleaning rod, grease tubes, etc. It was a real treat to win the option to buy it for only $600. I entered the M1-D lottery in the CMP with two months left and got drawn... All the equipment was still sealed in bags from 1968 when they refurb'ed it and put it in the rack. I've been told it'd easily get over $2k with the CMP paperwork...

Yeah I got to shoot a Romanian AK-47 and let me tell you the thing was a piece of junk. You could usually get about 12 rounds off in succession (semi-auto) before it jammed and then you had to take it apart to remove the bullet because the spring wouldnt do it job once it got hot. And accuracy was pitful. Id rather shoot a 30-06 or a 12 gauge anyday.

Do you own the land or is it leased? I don't know of anywhere around Austin to go that's not private or a hunting lease. But then again I haven't had the desire to go shooting more than fishing, so I haven't looked into it too much.

Updated pic. Stripped the finish off of the bolt carrier to make it look like the original russian AK, which had a chrome bolt carrier.
I shot it this weekend. It was getting 3" groups at 70-100 yards with iron sights from a kneeling position. Not too shabby for an AK...
If you hold the front handguard with your left hand at your hip and hold your right hand trigger finger straight in front of the trigger, then steadily pull forward with your left hand until the trigger hits your finger, the recoil will counteract your constant forward force of your left hand and if you do it just right the gun will shoot full-auto. It is pretty neat. it just goes BA-DA-DA-DA-DA-DA-DA-DAAA in a split second.

So your shooting range also has knife-throwing targets?
Now, go hunting with only the knife and I'll give my respect for that. Hunt with the semi-automatic weapon and that'll just be lame.

I think it might also be illegal in NJ because of the size of the clip.
Yes, I know there are several states that ban hi-capacity magazines. I know Maryland is one of these. Although the gun is legal there, the hi-cap mags aren't legal to sell there. I'm not sure about NJ, but that sounds about right.
I own a Bushmaster AR15 and after the new wears off, it is really kind of boring. I would much rather shoot bolt action rifles (preferably a Winchester .308) to see what kind of groupings I can get. More of a challenge than just blasting away with a semiauto.
Yeah, I know what you mean about the accuracy. It's just so damn fun shooting this gun though, and it's a nice piece to have in the collection. I was originally going to get an AR but it's too much money for now.
They probably replaced those parts to make it semi-automatic - the original is fully automatic.
No, that's not it. The BATF has a list of about 20 parts. Only 10 of any combination of those parts on an imported gun are allowed in. This AK has 15 parts on the list, so 5 had to be replaced with US-made parts, which surprisingly aren't as high quality as the parts made in a 3rd world country.
I got some NATO rounds (I think) that had a steel center covered by copper. Those will shoot through a 3/8 inch steel plate like a drill!
No kidding! I had some wolf FMJ and I was surprised when it shot straight through a steel pipe.
Well any gun that you don't take care of will become a piece of junk. The AK is one of the most reliable rifles ever made. I shot 250 rounds this weekend without a single jam. I have read on AK message boards of people shooting thousands of rounds in their Romanian SAR-1's without ever having a jam. These guns are designed to be mass produced in shitty factories by retarded apes and hold up in the worst conditions. These are not precisely built rifles made to shoot like a 30-06. They are close range battle rifles. But let me see you shoot someone at 200 yards with a 12 guage. Just because you once drove a ragged out Porche from the 1980's that had three hundred thousand miles on it, it doesn't mean all Porches suck.

LOL. But the alternative is a frightening prospect. Can you imagine the average human population of a supermarket all roaming around woodlands with semi-automatics?
