Palantir 0.98 is on my webpage now. This version fixes a bug with searches and the Tungsten 5-way navigators. I've also re-added the Insert upload mode in the Playlist screen once discovering what enqueue really means.

None so far. Different transports for Palantir data (could include serial, Bluetooth, wifi) will be considered after the Pocket PC port of the app, which is in the works. Considering other projects I'm working on, it will probably be a while. The app IS open source though .

Thanks,

The source is included in the .jar file you run to launch the program. You can extract it with unzip/winzip or the jar executable that comes with your jre.

Oh. That's easy. Thank you.

The hard part is that I've never done anything in Java. Should be fun, though. I want to modify the program so it writes my .pdb file to mimic my playlist structure rather than using the tags.

Let me know when you finish.

The PDB creator could be re-written in any language, once you figure out the DB format.

Keep in mind that the app relies pretty heavily on the way the database is structured, and vice versa. You would have to have three levels of playlists before you hit songs, and only three. To get what you want (your playlists replicated on the Palm) you would have to re-write the app itself, and depending on how your playlists are set up, major database changes, too.

See this post to understand why different views would be difficult the current way Palantir does things.

Thanks, Mark. Actually, I would settle for a subset of my playlists in Artist/Album/Song order. The reason that many of my tags are bad and I also have many classical or compilation discs. I'll take a look at the other thread and try to figure out how to make do with a 3 level database that comes from my "Artists" playlist rather than from the tags.

Thanks again,
Jim

It might be easier to re-tag your music to match instead of re-writing anything. You would be accomplishing pretty much the same thing with no development.

Plus retagging will get them right on the empeg, thus killing two birds with one stone.

I was confused while reading this... you mention "retagging" to get things to read properly into Palantir. But "tags" as in ID3 tags are not used by the empeg once the files are on the player. So, when you mention "fix the tags" do you really mean "fix the data in your database" or "fix the ID3 tags on the mP3 file and replace the file on the empeg"?

I'm still waiting for Sony to mail me my Clie's installation CD, so I havn't been able to play with this yet, but I imagine that even if I had a 50% larger file (as mentioned in another post) I'd consider it worth it if I could get Palantir to mimic my empeg's playlist structure. Of course, it's easy for me to say that since I wouldn't have to write anything!

Another petty request would be to have an install script ala emphatic, but your instructions are simple enough.

I'll do you one better... The "Empire" server functionality will be built into emphatic in the next release, with the option to disable it for those who don't use Palantir. This will allow people to use Palantir and not have emphatic croak (due to Hijack popups) when you queue songs. The irattach program will be installed as well, and will be launched by emphatic when appropriate. Just doing some final testing before I release it.

Well, I just find it's easiest to fix all my ID3 tags, then upload to the Empeg. If you like to modify the data in your database instead of making sure the ID3 tags are right, that's fine too, just as long as the data in the Empeg is correct. The export from jEmplode or Emplode exports the data in the database, so as long as that is correct you will get a good file for Palantir. I like to have everything neat and tidy, that way all my "tweak by" functions work correct and also the Palantir database is sorted.

You can't find a download of the Clie software somewhere? I'm sure you might be able to find it on some p2p networks.

Like I said before, Empire and Palantir are both open source, and I have posted information on the db format on this board, so you are welcome to modify them all you want. I prefer to have the Empeg's database correct for a few reasons:

1. You can use the auto-generated soup views in jEmplode to create your a-c -> Alice In Chains -> Dirt -> Would? tree view automatically, and update the playlists on the fly when you upload new songs. I have 0 user-defined playlists, they are all soup playlists generated by jEmplode.

2. Tweak by artist, source will always work correctly

3. Palantir works well out of the box.

I may think about this in the future.

Okay, good to hear. My database is very up-to-date. I'm anal about it. With the number of songs I have, it's been easier to update the database as I go rather than reload my music. So searches in emplode and tweaking all work fine. I just wanted to make sure my hard work wasn't wasted.

Hey Mark, I finally have this thing installed!

My Palm is timing out looking for the empeg though... It shows "Searching" for a while, then displays "Unable to find handheld device"... I'm aiming it right near the volume knob, about an inch away...

Is "supress_notify=1" effecting this?

I attached my config file.

Okay, after some trial and error, I was able to get "something" to happen. I guess I had to hold the Palm just right and "steady".

There was some contact, then the Palm displayed "Disconnected" and I never saw "empire" appear on the screen. Next, my Terminal showed the following and the player rebooted after the "Shuffle" screen appeared.... ?

Looks like I'm running out of memory too..

Modify your config.ini file entry to do a:

;@EXEC_ONCE /bin/bash -c "/usr/local/bin/start_empire 12 &"

Note the 12 instead of a 10. This will start Empire after a 12 second delay. The delay is needed to allow the player app time to start up and sieze the IrDA port, just so we can sieze it back. The lines:

start_empire: sleeping for 10 seconds...
player.cpp : 385:empeg-car 2.00 2003/04/01.
start_empire: Starting Empire...
IrDA: Registered device irda0
irlap_driver_rcv(), Unknown frame ef received!
Prolux 4 empeg car - 2.1434 Mar 26 2003
Vcb: 0x4086d000
irlap_driver_rcv(), Unknown frame ef received!
irlap_driver_rcv(), Unknown frame ef received!
irlap_driver_rcv(), Unknown frame ef received!

mean that Empire has not successfully taken control of the IrDA port. The added delay may be the result of your player having to account for so many tracks (unless you also have other software starting up such as telnetd or a VNC server, etc). I have seen this happen before to people with over 15k or so tracks.

Cool! Did you see the error message about memory? Is that something to be concerned about? A reserve cache setting is in order maybe (I have none setup)?

I have 22K tracks, so if 12 seconds doesn't work, I'll increase it some more.

My next experiment is to see if I can transfer the database to the Palm via my MemoryStick. Will be much faster if I can.

EDIT: It works! You have to name the file "Palantir Music Database.PDB" when you transfer it to the Memory Stick. The Palm will not be able to access the file from the card, so you'll need to transfer the file over to the internal memory.

Thank you!

I did see that... there is a bug in empire with some memory allocation (Tony C spotted that for me) :-/ that I could fix and you could possibly test for me, but I've never had it crash on me even with the bug. If the startup time adjustment doesn't work, we can try that. A ReserveCache setting would not cause or prevent that error.

I bumped it up to 16 seconds for it to load properly. Now I just need to get better at having the Palm and empeg see one another. Palm keeps timing out at "Searching".

Does this look normal for the serial output?

Quote:
erial_notify_thread.cpp: 180:@@ #5bd10 0:04:00
serial_no
tify_thread.cpp: 180:@@ #5bd10 0:04:01
serial_notify_thread.cpp: 180:@@ #5bd10

serial_notify_thread.cpp: 180:@@ #5bd10 0:04:03
serial_notify_threa
d.cpp: 180:@@ #5bd10 0:04:04
serial_notify_thread.cpp: 180:@@ #5bd10 0:04:05

serial_notify_thread.cpp: 180:@@ #5bd10 0:04:06
serial_notify_thread.cpp: 180
:@@ #5bd10 0:04:07
serial_notify_thread.cpp: 180:@@ #5bd10 0:04:08
serial_no
tify_thread.cpp: 180:@@ #5bd10 0:04:09
serial_notify_thread.cpp: 180:@@ #5bd10

serial_notify_thread.cpp: 180:@@ #5bd10 0:04:11
serial_notify_threa
d.cpp: 180:@@ #5bd10 0:04:12

Keeps repeating. The Palm will keep "Searching" while I hold it close, but nothing happens (I think "once" it said "Sending Playlist", but then timed out). The "Searching" will appear for as long as I point it at the empeg. Once I pull away, I get the "Unable to find other device" on the Palm.

It's showing all those because you spelt suppress_notify wrong.

Nope, I had it spelled write.

Mark was nice enough to get in touch with me and give me a test version of empire. Now everything works great! I guess my database size had something to do with it. I also had to extend the startup delay to 16 seconds.

The program is amazing! Great converstation peice too!

Any chance of making a Palm based Remote? The Rio one isn't backlit.

There is a new version of Empire up on my website. This version (0.25) fixes an memory leak that only arises when you are using much of the player's memory (like Brad was doing above). Grab it if you are having problems with Empire currently.

Do you mean save the list of songs that are currently in the Playlist view?

So you could have multiple playlists available on the Palm? I would have to think about this one. If it is a playlist that you will use repeatedly, why not just make a playlist on the Empeg? OR, you could beam one playlist up in Replace mode, then Bookmark it on the Empeg.

Yes, I was just thinking in situations where I don't have access to my notebook, or powered empeg. When I'm on holiday/roadtrip, I'd like to create playlists on my palm while in the comfort of the airplane seat, hotel room, toilet.. etc Some playlists I wouldn't want to save on the empeg, since it'd be the selection of songs my passengers would like to hear during the 8hr journey.
