So which is the button that converts the AAC files to WAV/Ogg/MP3 or the like for use on the empeg-car and/or Karma? The Burn to disc icon. Then rerip the CD to FLAC for the Karma, and WAV for the empeg.

I don't understand why they have to be different anyway. I guess they use their native filesystems, though.

Agreed. Too bad it's not worth the empeg guys' time to implement a plugin-based player so that we could write and add our own decoders to the player dynamically.

I don't understand why they have to be different anyway. I guess they use their native filesystems, though. Yes, that's the only difference: Macintosh ones are HFS+ and Windows ones are FAT32. Both are "mass-storage class" (or whatever the 1394 word for it is); they appear as external drives. So, unless Apple have gone to the trouble of integrating HFS+ itself into Itunes, you have to use a filesystem your computer's OS supports.

Even if a plugin player existed, we would still need a way to play the Apple DRM AAC files they sell via the iTunes store. I'd love for even just the Karma to support this, but doubt it will ever happen.
Too bad, since starting Feb 1, Pepsi products (1 in 3) will have a code to download one free song via iTunes. Get enough of those togther, and you have a few free CDs.

It installed OK for me (If you were curious that it was even possible ). It's a pretty sweet app, actually. I gotta hand it to Apple -- they really know how to make a nice looking app. Really well integrated into the iTunes Store too.

drakino, you listen to digital gunfire also? Yeah. I played Shadowbane with the guy who runs it, so when we grouped, we got to request songs. The style of music has grown on me quite a bit.

I love the new itunes, i didn't think i would, but this is really nice. I'm going to try and encode some purchased aac files to mp3 or wma and see how much worse the sound is by doing so. I really wish empeg would support aac files...
Does anyone know what it will take to support the playback of aac files on the empeg (so we dont have to re-encode them)? Is it even planned? I dont even know who does the software updates anymore.

Yeah, convert to wave. Sorry that's the only way.

There are utilities which convert a Mac iPod to a Windows iPod. The first one I found on Google is WinniePod. No guarantees about whether it works as I've never used it. I don't even have an iPod, my brother has one but he bought it as a Windows one anyway.

Does anyone know what it will take to support the playback of aac files on the empeg IIRC - "LOADSA" CASH for the licensing alone was the main counter argument, discontinued car player, blah, blah..........

I'm on the road this week, so I don't really have a chance to play with the new iTunes, although the screen shots are promising. Here's my biggest question: I have a Mac at home and a PC at work. Both have tons of free hard drive space. Can I set up my work PC to sync MP3 files from my home machine (where I rip them) automatically? Can I get it to run in both directions? Automatically? Can I choose a subset to sync to my laptop? Can I see my full library from the road and change the subset I've got on my laptop?
I'm just dreaming here, but if even a subset of this works, it would be fantastically cool. Right now, I just move files around by hand, and keeping things in sync is a pain.

I scoffed at Tom (Drakino) when he IM'd me yesterday with the news about iTunes on Windows. Perhaps I shouldn't have done that.
I was installing a new computer at someone's house last night and he asked me to install Music Match. After doing that, I thought that iTunes would be much better for this guy (and probably everyone else that just wants to rip their CDs and burn compilations). I loaded-up iTunes and after watching me use it for a few minutes, he told me to uninstall music match.

rsync seems a good answer to that problem, except I'm sure you want the music to show up in iTunes as well, right?
Somehow, I doubt that the databases are identical. But I could be wrong.

Doing some back-of-the-envelope math, it would take 30 days of non-stop transmission to get my MP3s from home to work over my ADSL connection. Clearly, the answer is to haul one machine so it's next to the other. Once the machines are in sync, then in theory I could use smartlist queries or something and then drag new files back and forth. Can Rendezvous be tricked into working across the Internet?
