Which version of Lame are people using? 3.70 or the latest 3.87b or what?

It's a tough choice... Earlier versions have known bugs. Later versions have unknown bugs. Look at the Changelog and decide for yourself. (I just switched from 3.85 to 3.87.)

That's what I was afraid you were gonna say. The lame changelog is confusing at best. I tried to read the lame maillist archive for a while to see if I could gather clues about which version I should be using...but it seems like borderline chaos over there as they developer a great encoder with different versions floating all over the place..old bugs, new bugs, improvements, fears about whether the improvements are improving or hurting the sound, etc.. Its all very very confusing and will probably be many years before its settled I'm guessing...

None the less, I decided to do a little test... So I am doing a head to head comparison of 3.70 vs. 3.87, using 16 different tracks, in both stereo and joint-stereo modes and at 6 different lowpass filter settings.... I will post results when I'm done.
