To me it's just handy to have an auto-filtering email account anywhere I go. The implementation of filters and labels is really nice.

Anyone ever not receive emails they know were sent to their gmail address? I've had two now that I know for sure were sent and not received. One was sent by me from a non-gmail account and another was someone I was conversing with thru email and it suddenly stopped. He said he had replied answering my question already...

I've heard reports of gmail's spam filters being overzealous.

Yeah I looked in the spam folder, nothing... I had received previous emails from that person, and it would have been a reply which would have fallen under the same "conversation" in the Gmail inbox that has 7 messages in it now...
The other was a mesage from me to a mailing list, which I do have set to receive my own postings from,...
Maybe they'll show up in 40 years like those old letters through the post office do sometimes...

Slightly, perhaps 0.5% false-positive rate for me, and that for messages that do look somewhat like spam (mostly newsletters in HTML). Still, makes checking spam folder necessary. Then again, I am yet to see a spam filter where it is not. For example, well-trained K9 has perhaps 0.1% false-positive rate (which you pay for with at least 10% false-negative), and PopFile both in 1% range, in my experience. Depends on how consistent one's perception of spam is, too, of course.

Still, makes checking spam folder necessary

Which completely negates the advantages of having a spam filter at all.

You still have to plow through all your emails, except now it's a bit harder because you have to look through multiple folders.

Sigh...

I don't know, you should be right, but I somehow feel this to be more convenient, especially with a line or so of the message displayed along with subject and sender, as Gmail does. Even with a 'normal' POP3 client (e.g. OE) and decent Bayesian (sp?) filter (I switched from POPFile to K9) it seems to me faster to glance once or twice a day at spam folder and, unless I spot something familiar, delete everything in one go than to delete messages from my inbox one by one. Besides, false-positives are never 'normal' textual messages that one cares for the most, but usually HTML-formatted newsletters (e.g. the one from Java Developer's Journal I found among spam another day) which will not be missed terribly if deleted by accident.

For anyone who is still looking for invites, or looking to get rid of invites, check out the Gmail Invite Spooler.
