Post any newer bugs here not resolved by the jump to 6.5 beta 6, or any feedback.

I know there's probably a majority of people who will disagree with me, but I prefered the "jump to first unread" system the last version had. I liked having a choice between going to that first unread or going to the first overall post.
I suppose the ideal solution, as with many BBS features, would be to make it the user's choice in the preferences. Of course, I doubt Infopop would listen
*edit*
Well, I guess this might be a bug report. I don't have the little arrow thing on the topics listing page, but inside the thread I have the "Jump to first unread post."
Given that clicking on the topic title takes you to the first unread post, I'm assuming that either this message was forgotten and not removed, or that it's there for when people aren't taken to the first unread post.
Sorry, I just don't like having no choice in how I read these

he just got done coding this so that it would go to the last read post when clicked, like the other one did. you can always click in and press your Home key.

Yeah, but you could always click on the arrow and it only requires a tiny bit more accuracy.
My point is just that it would be nice if they built into the board the ability to chose the action. I just doubt that Infopop would listen to a random user of their product. Maybe if Tom put in the suggestion, as the owner of their product, it would be a little higher up.
*edit*
Also, now the ability to jump to the first unread post when clicking on a page number of a multi-page thread is gone. I know there's the link at the top of the page for it now, but I definitely think it worked better the other way on that aspect.

Yeah, to clarify. The change back to the old way is part of 6.5 beta 6. This was dune due to public feedback on the infopop boards. I'll let them know there are fans of it and see what they do.
From the changelog:
Returned the jump to new posts to the old functionality due to public feedback. Removed the little arrow and made it so clicking on the subject takes you to the first unread post as in 6.4 and prior.

Interesting. I hope they'd consider making it optional. I can totally understand the other side of the argument. I just wish there were a way to let both sides have their way

I do have a bug report, though. I get an error when trying to update my personal information.

I take back what I said in this post. At least twice today, I've come back to the board and found a bunch of posts that I've read no more than 20 minutes ago still marked as unread. On reflection, I think I've seen it a few times with the previous beta, but it seems to be worse with this version.

Yup, this is exactly the problem I've been seeing and complaining about, too. With the prior version of the board, and this version too.
Additional data points:
You know how the table header is a lighter shade of purple for unread posts? Well, in theory, refreshing the page should make it go from light purple to dark purple because you've read the post and now it's marked as unread.
Well, about 50 percent of the time, if I press refresh, the shade of the table doesn't change. The only way I can be sure that the post got marked as unread is to keep pressing refresh until the bar goes from light purple to dark purple, and then I know it's properly marked the post as read.

Can I make a request? It should be pretty simple, too.
There's a bar at the top of every thread that contains, on the left, the map of where you are on the board (General >> Off Topic), and on the right, options for moving within the forum.
For some reason, there is a bar at the bottom which contains the same stuff on the right, but not the left. Would it be possible to include that stuff on the left as well?

I do like the new boards overall though and I'm sure these teething problems will be fixed.

Hmm, I suspect Tom has been working on the board recently, as I did have an avatar as of yesterday. Also, the old address empeg.comms.net is not working for me. I don't know why I like using it, but I just do Oh well, I'll use the new one. I just need to change the link on my homepage.

this is probably the problem with avatars. all linked files in posts are using the empeg.comms.net domain for the root. i imagine all it would take is a swift find and replace to empegbbs.com to fix it.

The empeg.comms.net alias going down also affected many numbers of in-post links on the board.

I'm not having any trouble reaching empeg.comms.net, is anyone else still having the problem described in this thread? Perhaps it's a DNS propogation problem.

It won't resolve from anywhere as long as his DNS provider doesn't know where it is (see my post above).

I'm hoping to get that fixed soon. I remember seeing the fix on the UBBthreads boards about it, (so yes, I do know about it, no more need for the PMs :-)
Maybe tomorrow. Barring anymore unexpected ER and OR visits.

That one forum had its permissions set wrong. I fixed it.
The method for viewing/setting permissions on the BBS is a bit of a pain. You can't group-set permissions for multiple forums, and you can't even see a grid of all the permissions for every forum at the same time. I don't think there's even a "default" set of permissions so that new forums aren't created wide-open (which is what happened with that forum I think).

Well, here's a couple grumbles and a question.
1. The UserList is wide open. It used to only be available once you logged in.
2. If you're not logged in, and you click on "Active Topics" you can see the first page. But when you click the "next" link to see the second page, you are told "must be logged in to use search features."
3. What's the shortcut to be automailed with responses to my posts, like in the old days? I'm afraid I might miss one and neglect to respond to someone asking me a question.

The setting is set to Registered members only, and I get a blank page if I try to get to it when logged out. Is this different then what you are seeing?

It's gone. You can add a thread to your favorites and be notified of responses to the thread, but the "e-mail me on reply to my posts" disappeared somewhere in the upgrade. I have asked for it back with no response so far.

Please can we get the search page modified? The 'Newer than' option is a pain in the butt because it doesn't default to a sensible value. Unlike other forums where last weeks threads are old news, this forum contains useful information in threads 2,3 and 4 years old. Ideally this value would default to 10 years and would catch everything ever posted that matches. If a searcher wants to narrow it down manually then he can easily. I'd settle for 1 year if you're concerned about server load. I'd like to see the number of search results default to 50 per page, What I'd also _really_ like to see is discrete links to pages in the search results. When I search for something and end up with more results than expected I'd like some method of advancing through 5 or 6 pages quickly until I get to the timeframe that I think I need without having to click 'next' 5 times and waiting for the results each time. It is possible to edit the URL to achieve this(*), so it should be possible to generate the links fairly easily. Something like "Previous, p-5, p-4, p-3, p-2, p-1, <p>, p+1, p+2, p+3, p+4, p+5, Next" would be ideal. (Similar to Google's handling of search results) (*) If you edit the URL such that you ask for a page that is beyond the result set then you get a "You must be logged in to use the search engine" error.

FWIW, if you change the time unit to the blank one, then it searches all mesages. You don't even have to touch the number in the field in front of it. Not that a better default wouldn't be better, but until then....

Sometimes I'm an idiot and when the new posts for a given thread span a page break, I miss it and accidentally go back to the index instead of clicking on to the next page. The old software would leave the second page's posts marked as unread, but the new software marks them read. The old way is better since sometimes I only just barely notice that there's another page, which makes me wonder how often I've just skipped past a page's worth of posts because I don't realize that they're there.

The user profile problem should be fixed. It was a bug where too many addslash commands got run under certain situations. If it's still happening, I'll need to file a bug report on it.

I have the final 6.5 software that I hope to get installed sometime soon and that should fix it.
