Now THIS is what I regard as history. Go, Space Ship One and those people in the team doing the work! Burt Rutan and Paul Allen are far-sighted people who will go down in the history books!

I was watching the live webcast earlier... there was a hairy moment when it rolled a few times just before the rocket engine cut out, but then it was at 328,000 feet, and the cam on the wing was sending back pics of Earth bouncing about below!
Even on a crappy 56k wmv feed, it was an amazing sight (except they kept cutting to a lot of people talking about M&Ms and 7-Up - show me the spaceship, dammit )

Yeah I was watching on NasaTV ... When that thing started rolling I was like "Oh god." and then the engines cut off. I thought the guy was done for. Did you hear them say later that they told him to abort and kill the engines but he left them on a few seconds longer to make the minimum altitude? Pretty amazing ...

I didn't hear them say that, but I did hold my breath for a few seconds and have flashbacks to the two shuttle disasters. Then I thought he was going to keep going higher and not come back down... ...I can be a bit of a pessimist at times!

I was watching on the webcast too (linked from a NASA page). I was watching in 56k but switched to the 150k version and it held out perfectly (in the UK). It was typical for Branson to get a Virgin logo plastered right in the middle of the camera's view!

Actually, wait, I take that back. "galvanise the commercial spaceflight business." Lordy, anything touched by "commercial" gets violiently destroyed. The last place I want to see "commercial" get its gruby capitalist hands are the deep sea (probably too late) and space.
I can see it now "Orbital spa treatment!!" and "Weightless weightloss!!"
But good god, this mess includes GoldenPalace.com?! You thought spam for online casinos was bad, wait till your inbox floods with "She's Eas.y T0 Pleas3 at ZERO G's!!! quxwpr"

I don't care about any of that. I care about a man in a privately made craft taking off as a pilot and landing an astronaut. Without NASA, without Bush or Kerrey or Nader, without the government...
...and sadly, without much media attention.

Going for the X Prize right now! Good luck!
Edit: CNN blog in case you cannot get a streaming feed (like me).

Damnit, I should be able to get a streaming feed, but when I press the "live" link on CNN, it gives me bullshit about signing up for a special "RealOne" service for fifteen bucks. I HATE Real and everything they stand for.

I tried the TV, can't find anyone showing it, not even CNN.
Hm, I didn't try the major networks (NBC etc), though. I'll try those.

Okay, our local UPN affiliate is carrying it (Channel 31 in the Sacramento area).
But I gotta leave for work soon. Sigh.

Well, the CNN blog appeared to stop updating after 10.15am. But the CNN home page is now reporting that a successful flight was made and that the prize has been won.

Yeah, it seemed to be a smooth and textbook flight, with a perfect landing. The timing of my finding the TV station was good, I got to see it from the moment they lit the rockets to the moment it touched the runway. Then it was time to head for work.

I caught a chunk of it on a (very choppy) web feed from ansari.org. Very cool!

Are there any torrents (or whatever) of the original stream? I didn't get a chance to catch it here at work, but I'd still like to see it.

xprize.org has streamed recordings for WMP (yuk).
Edit: they are still doing a webcast at the moment. The eariler flight is up there, though. I guess they will put todays up at some point.

A little "amen" to Tony. Real will not be appearing in the next deployment of software in my workplace and their site will be banned in the hosts file, no matter how much they need it. Friggin legal spyware.

To their credit, they removed most of the spyware-like misfeatures in their recent version. There was enough of a backlash against their prior versions that they made a bunch of changes for the better.
But then I go to watch Spaceship One on CNN.com and I can't because I hit multiple popups (blocked by my browser) and ads for their premium service that I can't seem to get past. Sigh.

Anybody else catch the "Black Sky" special on Discovery last night? It was so good, I had to stay up and watch it again at like 1am.
Anyways, it’s a huge 2 hour long documentary on SpaceShipOne the Burt Rutan. Part 1 is what I saw, which has tons of footage of the past 3 years, maybe 5 test flights, rocket motor tests, crash landings, and sticky situations at about 150,000 feet. I'd highly recommend everybody to check what time it’s going to replay and tivo it. Also on Oct 7th at 10pm EST part 2 will be out, with both x-prize flights.

So you dislike Real because CNN.com is using Real's premium services to host their content...
Sounds like a reason to change news sources. Sure, Real has had issues, but to blame them for CNN's decisions also seems wrong.

And the only reason CNN was offering a live feed was because they charge for their video content... Your real frustration here is that CNN wanted you to pay, not that real is evil. Real may be evil, but I'm inclined to say that they've gotten much less evil the past few years. If you havn't read it, their CEO's interview on slashdot is an interesting read.

Real may or may not be evil, but their technology sucks. That's the reason I hate them. The annoying software is just icing on the cake. I can't ever seem to get anything that looks much better than either a 3spf slideshow or something so compressed it looks more like a lost piece of Mondrian art than ... buffering ... buffering ... video.
I have none of these problems with WMP or QT.
