South By South-West, or SXSW -- which I hadn't heard of before Saturday -- is a music festival happening this week in Austin, Texas. It's a pretty big music festival: apparently over 1,300 bands are playing this year. And over 750 of those bands have contributed MP3s to an "SXSW Artists Showcase". And SXSW have put up a torrent of the whole gosh-darned enchilada... Peter

If you've got a firewall, BitTorrent is sped up hugely if you turn on port forwarding to your actual PC. This page goes into very considerable detail, but in general you just need to forward ports 6881..6889, TCP, from your firewall to your PC.

Also, to make sure you get the best speed, limit the upload speed to slower than your upstream bandwidth. If you don't then you upstream bandwidth will get filled, which doesn't leave any room for the TCP ACK packets, which kills your download speed.

Thanks again. I’ll read through the tuning doc to see if I can find anything. I don’t have a firewall on the PC I’m downloading from. I was able to download the "updated" songs in about 15 minutes however the full version is taking forever. Hopefully more people will start downloading and that will help.
The full version looks like it is zipped into two files. I kind of wish it wasn’t because if this fails I'll probably loose the entire zip and just not a few songs, oh well beggars….
Is there any other cool downloads like this that use Bit Torrent? Never head of Bit Torrent before.

I think it doesn't actually work like that -- until you've got the whole lot, none of your downloaded files are valid. I'd love to know exactly how it works, but it seems to fill the files in the order it receives the blocks, whether or not that's the right order. This surely involves it in reshuffling the blocks when the right ones do arrive, but maybe it does that on-the-fly too. It must be a bit like those jigsaw screensavers.

It's very popular anytime you've got a file to offer for download that's so big it'd wipe out your web server if you just handed it out. It gets used for Linux ISOs and that sort of thing.

Through the magic(?) of UPnP, Azureus was able to forward port 6881 automatically, but I'm still looking at a 7 day download.

I haven't used the official BT client for a while, so I don't know how it works now. With Azureus, the best BT client I have found, you can open files before the whole torrent is downloaded (including previewing parts of video clips, given a codec that can cope with that). You can even tell it not to download some files in the torrent, so in this case you could tell it only to download one of the two zip files.

I'm a big fan of ABC. Well, I was before I got scared of downloading. I don't have many legitimate torrents that I usually get 
They mentioned this on the Screen Savers, too. Sounds like a cool idea, but I'm sure most of it will be stuff I won't want to listen to.

No, you can definitely work with files within a torrent before the entire torrent is completed.
Now, it's possible that whatever Torrent client you're using doesn't actually do that, and only collects the blocks it receives into a big blob and then parts it out when it's done, but that's certainly not how it has to work.
Azureus seems to allocate files when the download starts and put the blocks in the right place when it receives them. I think there's an option to not preallocate, but that probably increases fragmentation significantly. Again, your client may do it differently.

It looks much better than qtorrent, which I'm currently using -- gotta wait for it to finish in a few hours before switching, though, or I'll likely lose the 231MB already downloaded.
I also tried the official bittorrent s/w, but the GUI was all but non-existent, and didn't seem to ever update onscreen. Mind you, the download rate (measured with other tools) was noticeably quicker than qtorrent is..

I usually use btheadlesscurses.py from the official distribution. It's very good and low-CPU at keeping itself updated, but it doesn't have the partial-downloads-usable feature of Bitt's client.

Through the magic of uPnP on my router, my ReplayTV crashes. Neither the router company nor DNNA seemed interested in fixing it though, so my router has to have uPnP disabled at all times so I can record TV.

Azureus does have a problem with hogging resources, especially when you have a good number of torrents going. I mostly use it on Windows, but I imagine renicing it under Unix would help with that. (Changing the process priority under Windows helps, but only a little.)

I stop torrents all the time before they are finished downloading (Anime) and when I restart Azureus it just checks the file to see what I have and resumes the download.
I have even changed from ABC and G3Torrent to Azureus and it just worked. I've tried many clients Azureus just seems to be the best.

I like Bittornado better than Azareus as well. Seems more stable to me.

I haven't tried that Azureus, so that might be worth a try, too. The main reason I liked ABC so much was that I could have the program maximized on my second monitor, with dozens of downloads queued up, and I could control at any time which ones I wanted to be downloading. It made everything very easy after dealing with the multiple Bitornado windows.

Mmm.. ABC claims to be built from a fork in Bittornado or something, so it really should be better than the latter. But, alas, the Linux version doesn't sound anywhere near stable yet, and there's no .deb package out yet.
So now I'm trying Bittornado, and so far it is the best one on my system. The Java based Azureus (discussed earlier in this thread) looks the slickest, but I don't have java set up on my torrent box.

Ah, think of it as a sampler CD -- the type you'd listen to so you can find new music to go out and buy.
For those who haven't heard of this festival before, there are a few of these large festivals sprinkled about the NA continent -- NXNE, and NXNW are the two that I'm most familiar with. Dunno if they torrent anything, though.

Now this is really cool. There really is something for everything in there. You would think that living in Austin I would have been able to find this, but most of the SXSW marketing seems to skip us  The only downside to that when they encoded, they skipped the v2 tags and didn't put the artists website in there so it takes some digging to get a CD. Great idea though.

I can't believe the client make that much of a difference but I was using burst and get 1 kbps then I installed bittornado and am getting 550 kbps.

Some clients lie about how much they are uploading and this will help them get the file faster. These clients also get banned by trackers or users that see you using these (bad) clients. Other clients don't update the tracker early into the torrent. This causes the tracker to ignore you since it doesn't know you have any of the file yet.
I always self update the tracker on any torrent I've just started after I have about a meg.

I pulled the BitTorrent 4.0 to use. After setting the max upload insainly high for a while I noticed that only about 12-13KB/s was going out while maybe 100KB/s was coming in. Revising the max upload to match the observed rate out. My incoming zoomed to just shy of 380KB/s. If my estimation is correct, that's right at the 4Mb/s download speed of my cable service. I left it running about 20 hours after the download was complete and wound up with a 229% share ratio. BTW. Andy, Thanks for the tip about properly setting the upload rate.

I don't quite get how preallocating a sparse file helps. I see two reasons to preallocate: to suck up that space in the filesystem so you know you can get it when you need it, and to lessen fragmentation on the file. Preallocating a sparse file helps neither of these conditions. I'm sure it's quicker than writing zeros across 800MB, but if you're going to do that, why not just use the incremental method they list, which would generate sparse files anyway?

I finally finished listening to this entire collection. Kept about 400 songs totalling about 1.5 gig. I've attached a file listing the ~45 artists who I think are worth looking into.
Hey, that's 45 more artists who's CDs I may buy. It was a refreshing way to find new music without having to watch MTV or wade through commercials on radio. I'll be sure to (somehow) let the artists know I found them via the torrent, hoping they continue to support MP3 samples.
Phew, THAT'S where my last month and a half went. Listening to the eclectic mix every night and the same 925 song playlist on my empeg every day. I really have to stop these massive "listening binges": 1.5 years reviewing my CD collection in 02-03, 6 months of straight techno in 04, 1.5 months in SXSW, etc, etc.

I actually kept the Kaiser Chiefs track ("I Predict a Riot") filed under Rock / Pop / Indie. It's a fun track and catchy as can be. It will grow on me over time and I'll probably try to find their CD. Thanks for reminding me about them.
Listening to this comp has made me realize that my supergenre/genre/subgenre structure is really weak. Some day I'll take the pie out of the sky and create the "attribute tagging" system I keep dreaming of.

PERFECT timing since I got my 300 gig drive! Now I won't have to "Hm... Program Files... I bet I can trim a few meg from there" to free up space. Seriously, I was working on ones of megs of free space.

This one is giving me a hard time. After about 8 hours with this Torrent open, my machine freezes. The same symptom happened in both the latest BitTorrent and BitTornado. Running WinXP SP2 fully patched with only one port (6881 or something) open on my Linksys router.
When my machine was on Win98, this same version of BitTornado ran for days with no problem. It also ran under WIn2k, though on a different machine on a different ISP / network medium (cable).
Besides XP, I'm using a newer Linksys router than before. I wonder if this is DoS as a side effect of malicious scanning or something. I'll enable logging on the router, somehow.
And, for the first time, I'm getting "failed hash check" messages. Lots of them. 1/3rd of all downloads are failed. Maybe that's the cause, maybe it's a bad seeder, I don't know.
Any ideas? Thanks all.
Also, SXSW part 2 gave over 50% hash errors, so I tried to delete it and start over. But the machine still thinks there's some downloaded; even after deleting the .torrent and the download directory. No settings files in Program Files that I can see. Would it track status in the registry? And if so, why did the most recent freeze of part 1 reset my share stats? Odd odd odd.....

I'd suspect that you've got some memory going bad. Have you noticed instability with other things? Try leaving memtest86+ running all night and see if you get anything. Other than that, you could try azureus, it's my bittorent client of choice these days, though I'd don't particularly like it.

No problems here on Azureas/WinME. My rates could be better if I tracked down the port forwarding issues with my router, but two nights was all it took to get both files. ...and as someone else already said- I haven't yet finished grinding through the last batch of music from SXSW!

I didn't like Azureus either. It just seems like a total resource hog. I've been using µTorrent for the past 3-4 months and couldn't be more pleased!

Thanks for the tips, but I think I just "heard" my problem. Torrenting, reading forums, and I hear CLICK, as if my hard drive just spun down. Well, upon reboot, it didn't spin back up, so it must have shut off and turned back on very quickly.
This is a known issue in my setup. Maybe my power supply is too weak to drive three IDE hard drives. Trick is, this hasn't happened in the 3 months since I've installed XP with three HDDs.
Is BT, on any client, causing so much disk activity that it requires more extra power than I can provide?
I should just take that third drive out, after moving the rats nest of data off of it.....

Yup, it is. It's nice for keeping everything organized and letting you set things globally for all your torrents, but I just don't bittorent enough. Really I should move all my bittorenting off the powerbook and onto the server which stays up all the time anyways.

Yes. BitTorrent on my laptop even with a 5400 drive can noticeably slow down other disk operations if the torrent is larger then memory available. I try to download DVD sized downloads overnight when I don't use the machine, things like Knoppix 5. CD sized things or smaller tend to fare much better because it's not hitting the hard drive nearly as much. BitTorrent works by receiving data in a somewhat random order causing writes to the file to go all over the place. This is due to most clients writing out the file as all 0s first to allocate space, then they go back and write real data as it comes in. And it's also going back and reading random data to serve out to other people on the network.

Interestingly on uTorrent's site I found out why my Azureus not only ran slowly, but completely hung my machine on occasion, and blocked my Internet connectivity. Linksys routers (mine is a WRT54GS) do some annoying things with keeping connections alive up to 5 days - BitTorrent rapidly fills that space. So I reflashed with HyperWRT and running the startup scripts recommended on uTorrent helped a bit (also giving me a wireless output power boost for my troubles  ) But then I found another piece of advice regarding XP2 connection limitations. LvLKing (I think - linked from the same FAQ as before) offers a patch which eases these limitations, and didn't appear to have any evil code attached (disclaimer: don't rely on my word, check yourself if you want your box to be safe)

I think I have just been jinxed. After spending two hours cleaning snow out of my driveway I come inside to some loud shirping sound. Well it turns out to be a 120G HDD in my shuttle. So I spent the rest of the day reinstalling windows on a new 250G SATA drive what a pain.

Thanks for the tips guys. Yeah, uploading to 12 people at 3kbps each is probably pretty annoying for the hard drives. I'll only run these for short periods until I get that old drive off line. It's not that old (you know me too well): a new 300gb, a year old 80 gb, and a 3 year old 60 gb. All WD, all 7200rpm, all IDE. Darn weak power supplies.

Thought I'd add a minor distraction to the SXSW fervor. Saw a link on Fark today that mentioned Joe Satriani's new album available as streaming content. The comments were peppered with a few good links to free music- Harvey Danger Lorenzo's Music Free Solo Guitar (wow! solo accoustic motherlode!) BHTM also has some songs available online- great show at the Filmore in February! Woot! Carbon Leaf opened for BHTM last year- good stuff. /just sayin'

After four months of listening to the entire compilation when I had time, here are my picks that seem worth looking into. With so much sounding alike, I was quickly jaded and tended to choose anything eclectic or obscure.
Thanks for posting the link; hoping for and looking forward to next year's compilation. Phew, I can finally listen to something ELSE.

And I haven't even loaded SXSW 2005 or 2006 onto my empeg yet. The thought of tagging ALL those individual songs is overwhelming (even though I only saved half of the original ~1000 each). And SXSW revealed that my music organization system is far too limiting to contain its (pockets of) vastness.

I wonder how the rename/delete will effect the file being shared back out. I guess it's all block-level data, so each client can interpret the file name as it chooses.

As long as you rename it in the client, it works fine as the client is aware of the change.

Ah hah - Azureus Bit Tyrant - from http://bittyrant.cs.washington.edu/It is pretty good at maximising your download speed. From the FAQ - Q: Isn't BitTyrant just another leeching client? No. BitTyrant does not change the amount of data uploaded, just which peers receive that data. Specifically, peers which upload more to you get more of your bandwidth. When all peers use the BitTyrant client as released, performance improves for the entire swarm. The details of this are explained further below. In our paper, we consider situations in which peers use clients which attempt to both maximize performance and conserve upload contribution, but BitTyrant, as released, attempts only to maximize performance. Q: How is BitTyrant different from existing BitTorrent clients? BitTorrent differs from existing clients in its selection of which peers to unchoke and send rates to unchoked peers. Suppose your upload capacity is 50 KBps. If you’ve unchoked 5 peers, existing clients will send each peer 10 KBps, independent of the rate each is sending to you. In contrast, BitTyrant will rank all peers by their receive / sent ratios, preferentially unchoking those peers with high ratios. It seems to be a screw-up. I checked out the first four on your list in emacs: the Imaginary Icons, Fujiya & Miyagi, and Lou Rhodes tracks appear to be AAC files with ID3 tags spooged-on; the John Watts track appears to be an HTTP 404 error page (!) with ID3 tags spooged-on...

Interesting... I get the impression that SXSW folks have a script that takes a list of links, downloads them, and applies ID3 tags -- without doing any error checking.

Thanks for the tip, that saved my ears some pain (I'm still on "Br" listening alphabetically).
I wonder how well the Torrent hash protects file integrity. My system is suffering from ocasional errors potentially from CPU over heat. Downloading the torrent was frought with error. When it finally finished, about 10% of the tracks are incomplete. I wonder how much bad data I was sending back out. Thankfully I've deleted my outgoing copy of the torrent, bought a replacement CPU, and will redownload it in order to share.

After four months of listening, over half the songs didn't get immediately deleted. However, my attached list of songs worth looking into is quite short. Guess I wasn't paying much attention while listening to this so I overlooked some quality pieces.
Maybe this list will help those with similar tastes to hone in on some quality independant music.

And, if you're interested, I sorted the surviving 2.01 gig of music not only by supergenre/genre/subgenre, but also by tempo and tonality. The six combinations of three tempos and two tonalities decently represent six different moods. They help break up the heavily populated genres (rock, pop, folk) so you can only listen to what you're in the mood for.
The attached directory list could be a decent file moving script with a little search/replace or SED work.
Anything not on the list was deleted mere moments after it started playing because it really didn't agree with me.

Is it just me, or maybe just my mood while listening, or does a lot of this year's SXSW torrent really suck? I've listened through bands starting with E and only two songs have landed solidly on my list of "bands worth looking in to" (Anamanaguchi, Clare & The Reasons). This torrent is giving my Delete key a workout!
The "6 words" review is interesting. I sometimes agree with the reviewer, but other times we're polar opposite. Evangelista was insufferable, Delorean was unnerving, and Dandi Wind was long winded ("Zing. Rimshot."). Yet, Anamanaguchi tugged at my nostalgic heart strings, and, um, that's all that's really on my good list so far.
Well, I've got months of listening to go, so we'll see how it picks up.

Azureus Vuze is pretty good. But it's so much slower downloading and you seem to get so many less connections than when using µtorrent. It's also a lot more bloated and slower running. It does have the advantage of supporting more platforms though.

Probably a good thing anyway. They'd never be able to live up to the promises of the first two albums, much in the same way that the second album didn't live up to the foundation of the first. Don't get me wrong, I love A Second Coming, but for completely different reasons than the first album.
Brown has a successful solo career and IMO, has been producing some solid material on each album.
I just can't believe it's been almost 20 years! Damn.

However it easily maxes out my broadband on the connections it has (when doesnloading SXSW I had around 70 peers connected) and it plays better with the platform than utorrent ever did, so I put up with the advertising nonsense and bloat :-)

Very nice! If you don't continue this in the future, there's a smaller sampling that NPR Music puts out every year of the top 100 tracks to look out for. That's here. On a related note, my best bud is NPR Music's sole SXSW photographer. If you do a Google Image search for "npr music sxsw 2013 photos", almost all of those are his, including this one of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs:  And this one of the Smashing Pumpkins, that their bass player ended up ordering for Billy Corgan's birthday because Billy liked it so much. Apparently it's hanging in their studio with their gold/platinum records:  (my apologies if I've posted this stuff here before, I'm proud of the guy)

Also of note this year is the iTunes Festival at SxSW. Free streams and recordings after the performances. Classically, the iTunes Festival has only been a London event.
