If you think about it, it's in ebay's best interest to work with the cops on this. If ebay becomes knows as a stolen good dumping ground, it will be bad for their business. I would contact them but I've never been in your situation (thankfully). Good luck.

=(.. Got my first email from the guy after winning the auction and he is already deciding not to sell it. He claims it was due to miscommunication but I have not received any emails from him yet. I told him I had already sent the money and to wait up for it. The email is below.
Item: empeg rio digital audio $1,999 retail (5826031362) This message was sent after the listing closed. sincity7o2 is the seller. due to no payment and no reply to messages, im sorry to inform you that the empeg is no longer currently for sale due to misscomunication

Now he says that the empeg is no longer in his possession. I said my money order was still on its way, and asked if he had sold the empeg. Hopefully this is because the police have recovered it, but I dont think they would have moved so quickly.

OK, his response to the Police might be. "I was selling it for a friend and he took it back and headed to.... No I do not know where he is or the empeg."
I hope you do get it back. I hate liars and thieves.

I'd try and play this a little more like a real buyer. I'd be pretty ticked off if I won an auction and suddenly the seller decides not to sell it. Check out the terms of service for ebay regarding sellers retracting items they're selling. If he has broken the terms of service, explain that to him, but don't make any actual threats about contacting them... it would just be implied by the context. Conversely, play dumb and ASK him whether or not rectracting the item for sale is allowed by ebay once the auction is over. Again, you have to seem like a winning buyer who wanted the item he bid on.

A google search for "empeg 10101677" gives this thread as the only result. I hope he hasn't discovered it.
I haven't had a chance to call the police for you yet. I'll try and do it tomorrow.

I called a few days ago and left a message on the detective's machine, but I have not gotten a callback yet. I will also try tomorrow from the office.

The guy probably found the thread. Who knows what drove him to look, though. Googling the buyer's name, perhaps?
We should make a policy to hide threads when the connection is made between owner and thief. ie: 48 hours after this thread started, and as soon as the stripped car guy identified the parts as his. Further communication could be done by PM between the victim and the people who provided info in the thread.
It's harsh, but I'd hate to see any more excelent examples of community detective work go unresolved. Maybe the cops and eBay still have a leg to stand on. Possession of stolen goods, etc.

I was surprised that he gave up the serial number to be honest with you. I just discovered this thread today and after it was stated he gave up the serial number, I wondered if he'd start to get suspicious (why else would someone ask to know the number unless they wanted to know it was stolen?) I guess we should look into a new strategy for this?

Perhaps we could add a new category to the BBS: 'Trust and Safety' (to pinch the ebay department name) and make it so that only those that are logged in and have more than, say, 100 posts can read it?

Have you looked at the number of posts that Ri-On (the owner of this stolen mpeg) has? He'd be blocked from participating in a thread about his own player.

Then pick another number, say 25. Or a combination of posts and joined-since. The barrier needs to be chosen so that there is a good chance of fraudsters not qualifying or their behaviour (such as attempting to artificially increase their post count) being spotted.
There will always be exceptions - in this case, one of the sysops could have been asked to 'tweak' the database so that Ri-On could participate.

Everthing is ready to go as far as nailing this dude. Just waiting on Bryce to get back to me as to whether he can produce an original receipt, or a bank statement or credit card proof of purchase. This is apparently what the DA is waiting for before an arrest can be made.

This is slightly surprising. Given that you purchased it second hand, I am a little curious why they would need the original proof of purchase (which probably does not have a serial number on it). Would not a receipt of some kind for your purchase from Bryce be sufficient?

Yea I dont know why they need that. My receipt from Bryce should be enough. I guess they think he stole it too... lol. Well the DA is making it tought I guess. Too bad Bryce doesnt want to cooperate. Ive sent him like 5 or 6 emails over the past month or more. I dunno what to do since its basically in his hands.
