I'll probably be getting one of these over the next day or so unless someone really advises me not too!
Anyone have one and care to comment? Build quality, battery life... will it play large divx files without too much of an issue?
And does anyone have any discount codes? Dell have already taken 15% off it and the 624MHz model is now £268 delivered, but any savings are good.

If you type "dell coupon" into the US ebay, you will get a ton of sellers with 20% off coupons. I'm not sure how they get these coupons, but it doesn't appear to be a scam because a lot of deal forums use these "ebay coupons" to make deals sweeter. I don't know if you can use the US coupons in the UK store, but here's a link to the US coupon auctions. From what I hear, most coupons are delivered in under an hour.

I've got an X50 which, since I got my SPV M600 hasn't been used. Make sure you get one with a VGA resolution screen (X51v) as I've been kicking myself for not buying of those.
I never liked the full size phone/PDA's but the M600 and the M3100 are really good IMHO.

Thanks for those Rob. I'll have a browse through.
Andy how do/did you find the X50 in terms of battery life? Would it play video for a couple of hours do you think? i.e. a movie on a plane?

Best to get a generic laptop car/air adapter. I have one similar to this and it has enough connectors to power lots of things, or you could bodge an adapter if required.

Unless it has dramatically more battery life than my X30, then definitely not. They are not really designed or optimised for that kind of use.

I had the X50v for a while, and it was certainly a very nice piece of equipment, but I found that it just didn't fit my purposes. There's a reason why the PDA is going away. I thought I had a use for it, but I didn't. I also wouldn't make it my portable video player, although I never tried. It would probably be sufficient. That said, when I was doing my comparisons, IMO it was the best PDA out there. If it had a phone in it, I'd be pressuring my company to get me one to replace my Treo 600. As for power adapters on a plane or anywhere else, I'm a fan of iGo.

For surfing the web, email, calendar and Solitaire (that get's hammered!) then it's fine. For video and audio playback, forget it. You're probably better off with something designed to do that.
If it's 90% PIM features and 10% video watching then a PDA will probably be okay. However if it's 99% watching videos and occaisionally surfing the web then I couldn't recommend it.

Cheers Andy(s). I was hoping battery technology had gotten to a point that I could use a PDA as a portable video player but oh well!
I could play divx movies on my old iPaq 4150 but I suppose it wasn't as power hungry.

Well, perhaps you could get a portable video player that you could use as a PDA.
The Archos 604 WiFi should be out soon. It's just like the 604 that's out now, but with a touchscreen, wifi, and PDA functions. I'm not saying it'll be as good as an Axim on the PDA front, but I'd bet it'll be better at PDA functions than the Axim is with video capabilities. Besides, lots of people loved the Archos PMA400 which was the older model. Personally I'm looking at the 160GB Archos 504. Too much money at the moment, though.

Well, the guy on that forum isn't the sort I usually listen to, and his posts got me more irritated than his message. I'm wondering what kind of videos he tried playing on the device, and I wonder if he realizes that you need to purchase a software update to be able to play AC3 tracks. None of it seems like he's very well informed, for instance he didn't know you could use the player as a mass storage device until a few posts down. And he could have easily seen on the product site or in any review that the player doesn't come with a standard AC adapter.
Meh, I'll wait for more word on this before I denounce the product. Plus I'm not all that concerned about gapless playback. Few other players support it, so if they're trying I consider it a good sign. It would be nice if they didn't make false claims, though.

Hmm I'd forgotten all about Archos. I was going to get an av300, but held off for the av400 then held off for the av500 and never got anything!
Yes though... I could use my old Ipaq for pda stuff and just get myself a pvr.
How does the 604/504 differ from the av500 series? It seems to do the same things and theres not much difference in dimensions or battery life. Or am I missing something here?

Ha! I know how that is. I got (and still own) an AV340, but I had to get it for a long trip for storing photos. It turned out to be one of the most usefull gadgets I've ever bought.
Quote: Yes though... I could use my old Ipaq for pda stuff and just get myself a pvr.
Or as I was suggesting, just get rid of the Ipaq and get the 604 WiFi. Then you could browse the internet at hotspots (I don't know if your Ipaq has wireless).
Quote: How does the 604/504 differ from the av500 series? It seems to do the same things and theres not much difference in dimensions or battery life. Or am I missing something here?
You know how it is, always slight improvements/changes. I think the main difference is the modular design. Their idea, whether good or bad (it's debateable) was to sell the basic player for a relatively inexpensive price, and depending on your needs you could pick up the various add-ons later. So this one doesn't record out of the box, you have to buy one of two accessories. It also doesn't have USB OTG out of the box - again, you need the appropriate adapter. Obviously, this creates a lot of parts, which I don't really like, but the base 604 now starts out at $350.
Beyond that, the 604 is basically the AV500 30GB version (commonly referred to as the AV530). The 504 is basically the AV500 100GB version (or AV5100/AV560), and comes in [I believe] 40GB, 80GB, and 160GB sizes.
Lastly, the 404 is their reimagining of the GMini 400/402/402cc line, except that instead of the GMini 500 (which was exactly the same size as the AV500 but lacked recording features - this was the stupidest move Archos ever made, IMO), it's like a chopped-off 604, with a 4:3 screen. This doesn't scream "mini" to me, but I guess it's mini-er I do like that they're making a distinction between their 1.8" and 2.5" drive product lines. That always bothered me before.
The one thing that's frustrating me is the pricing on the 504 line. It's disproportionate, IMO. The 40GB is $350, the 80GB is $399, [so far I think both are reasonable] but the 160GB is $599. Lets think about this for a second. I'm assuming that you've got your standard 160GB 2.5" drive in there. I just bought such a drive at retail price for $172. So even at the $200 difference, that's a profit of $28 per player for Archos. But that's $200 over an 80GB drive, so I wouldn't be surprised if they were pricing the drives at somewhere around $300, giving them a $128 profit on each sale. Does that seem reasonable to anyone? And that's assuming the retail price I paid for my drive.
Sorry for the rant. It's just been bugging me lately, because I was quite excited to see the new players come out, and I was all ready to get the 504 until I heard about the price. IMO, it's $100 too high.

Thanks for the in-depth explanation! Yes i see what you mean about the drive pricing Its $200 over the 80gb (as you mentioned). How easy is it to upgrade these units yourself? Buy an 80gb unit and install your own 160gb drive and sell the 80gb drive? I'd also have hoped they'd start using the 1.8'' drives to get these things even smaller (or use the extra space for batteries) but then I suppose there would be no 160gb model. How cute is that 404? Probably too small for my needs. Yeah perhaps a 504 or a 604. To be honest, 30gb would do me fine (for now) and if I could upgrade myself later then all the better. A 604 would do me fine I think. The only difference I can see between it and the 504 (other than drive size) is that the 504 has 30mins more battery power (5hrs vs 5.5) and is 6mm thicker (17mm vs 23mm).

I've thought about that. Even better: buy the 40GB. Then I can use the 40GB in an external enclosure. Even better, get an external enclosure that's AC powered as well as USB powered, and use it as extra storage for the 504's USB OTG.
Quote: I'd also have hoped they'd start using the 1.8'' drives to get these things even smaller (or use the extra space for batteries) but then I suppose there would be no 160gb model.
My guess: they want as few form factors as possible, and two is the magic number. Apple has two for the iPod line (the slimmer with a one platter 1.8" drive, the thicker with two platters). I suppose Archos could have gone with two-platter drives, but they probably decided to create the slimmest player they could instead, and leave the higher capacity to the 504. Still, isn't the iPod up to 80GB on the two-platter drives? I think 80 is enough for most people with that size a device.

I don't think you'll be able to upgrade the 604 very much. Unless you try to really squeeze a two-platter drive in there. At the moment, I think 40GB per platter is the maximum for 1.8" drives.
I think the increased battery life on the 504 is because the battery takes up the whole back instead of half of it on the 604. It would probably be even greater if it didn't have the larger hard disk to power.

Nope. The 604 is the 1.8" hard disk. The 504 uses 2.5" hard disks. The price difference is interesting. They retail on Archos's site (and everywhere else that I've seen) for the same price.
Oh, and just remember, you might want to hold out for this.
*edit* Wow, £250 is almost $470! I can get it for $350! If VAT isn't greater than/equal to the difference, it might be worth getting it out of the country. Planning any trips to France? (Archos's home country)

One more thing on that thread: the last post was over a week ago. I wonder why he gave up so quickly (maybe he returned it before his seven days were up?). I will say that it looks like he was using firmware that is now out of date. Apparently there have been as many as five updates since his last post, though none of them mention problems with gapless.

Oh one more question you might know the anwer to... they quote 5hours or 5.5 hours video playback but how accurate are these things normally? Can I expect 3 hours from normal use for example?

Of course, I don't have one of these devices, but reviews I've read say that you do get about what they claim. CNet got 14 hours of music, but didn't have numbers for video.

Well the Archos 604 arrived today. (Decided my old pda can do the pda stuff)
First impressions... this thing is gorgeous. Very well built and a lovely large screen. Feel good in the hand - not too heavy. Transferred 2GB to it it was super quick.
Thats all I can do just now as its charging but I'll post more once I've tested it properly.

Wow, that was fast! I'm impressed I'll definitely be interested in your impressions. I really want to hold one and see how it feels. Target has the 504, but it's completely encased in thick plastic, as though it were an artifact in some museum. Sharper Image had the AV500 in a case, but they would take it out and let you hold it. I might check there...
