Just wondering... does the rotary button (volume knob) on anyone else's MK2 "stick" ever?

I notice that sometimes the knob will not rotate as smoothly at certain points along its axis. Also, i have experienced a couple of occcasions when the knob will be pressed in (say, to toggle the display back to a visual after starting my truck) and not pop back out again without me gripping it around the edge and pulling a little.

If the knob or the buttons ever stick, it's probably because they're binding up against the plastic fascia.

If you loosen the hex screws, you'll notice that the fascia has a little room to move around on its mountings. Sometimes this will press against the buttons or the knob. Spend a few minutes adjusting the tightness of the screws and the position of the fascia until everything works smoothly. Do not tighten the screws too hard, as doing so is a sure way to make the buttons stick. Just get them gently tight. Mine are only as tight as I can make them with my fingertip pressed against the end of the screw (I don't cinch them down with the hex wrench at all).

turns out the colored faceplate was binding against the stem of the rotary button. it seems the hole was mis-placed (just slightly but this was enough to make the knob rub).

One thing that i noticed was that the hole in the faceplace cut for the rotary button leaves very little room for errors of this nature... it is cut with almost no extra space around the stem of the knob.

I took a dremmel rotary tool with a very wide attachment and just center-bored the hole to give about an extra 1/8" of space in the radius of the opening. That worked perfectly.

The button no longer sticks in any fashion. Thanks for all the good advice, people!

The faceplates are injection moulded so it isn't possible for one of them to have a hole in the wrong place. It is possible for the plate to be misaligned during assembly - removal and reassembly would fix this. It may also be possible that control was mounted off centre, but this is unlikely as there are alignment posts.

The hole is a close fit to the rotary control shaft because the faceplate provides an EMC barrier. The rear face is coated with a conductive material.

ah, now i understand the reason for such a tight sqeeze.

as for the "misaligned" comment... i guess i chose improper wordage... i assumed that the faceplates were all stamped from a form that does not vary between pressings. i found it odd, however, that removing and re-seating the plasitc did not help. maybe it was a case of the rotary knob slightly mis aligned (maybe the shaft was not perfectly perpendicular to the front panel)

ah well, i'm just glad it's smooth now.
