I got my 12-13 years ago (maybe even longer ago). Used it for years and recently the hard drive failed I can't believe it lasted this long. I haven't done anything except use it in my car for years. Well I bought a new SSD hard drive and of course I have a newer computer than what I used to have a few years ago. I'm trying to set everything up but I'm lost. Emplode won't install since I'm running Window 7 pro on a 64 bit machine. I got a usb to serial adapter so I can get the hard drive going. Can someone point me in the right direction or let me know what I need to do? Thanks.

It ought to. I just installed car-emplode-v2.00 on Windows 8.1 Pro on a 64-bit machine. What error message do you get?

It even discovered and connected to my spare empeg over Ethernet (well, the laptop is on Wifi, but...). I suspect that USB won't work, though.

Use ethernet rather than USB with emplode.

Okay, I was initially using my original cd to install Emplode, which appears to have been the problem. car-emplode-v2.00 worked.

Unfortunately, Emplode won't detect my empeg. I've tried usb, ethernet, serial (via usb). It just searches. Any suggestions?

Thanks again.

When using ethernet, check what IP address the empeg has and what the IP address on your machine is. They need to be on the same network segment.

The Empeg is not fully booting up. So I can't access the menus on it to get an ip address from it.

Then you need to get a boot log from the serial port so that the experts can see where it stops and hopefully guide you further.

Andy thanks for the link.
Below is the output. The last line says Kernal panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 03:05.
After doing a search, I saw this post about that. Will this SSD not work?

So this is a brand new disk and you've basically just tried to boot up the empeg to put some music onto it? If so, you need to first build the file structure on the disk before it will boot up and you can use emplode. To learn how to do that, head over to Rio Car Disk Upgrade Guide. You also need to download the disk builder software.

Okay, I've got it working. I now have 128gb SSD installed and working.

The original issue was the USB to serial adapter I was first using. I got a FTDI one and it worked.

Thanks StigOE for posting the link to the big disk builder. When you did, I was just getting ready to go look for it last night.

Thanks again everyone for the help and posting up helpful information and links to make this easier.

I purchased one of these cables for my Empeg. While it's a bit pricey, it has the FTDI serial adapter and null modem all in one cable. Just plug it in, install the driver and it works. No other fiddly adapters or bits strung together.
