I've convinced myself to order a Tuner and extra remote VERY soon,

Sleds are currently in stock, and we have a pile of metalwork awaiting looms (which are on their way). I suspect that we'd post when sleds were getting low.

I received my tuner this morning, I am currently installing it (upgrading software as I post). I did not receive shipment confirmation or anything.
But I rather have a tuner without confirmation than a confirmation without a tuner! :)

www.royalmail.co.uk and go to track & trace - but international recorded delivery has very little tracking information. It's really just regular mail with proof of delivery.

Got mine Tuesday. Installed it Wednesday (took all of 5 minutes). Decodes FM great even with a low signal (1 - 2 bars). Doesn't seem to get much on AM though. Isn't anyone transmitting on AM anymore in the UK? Ordered a Rio remote too since 'the announcement'. I just wish they'd left the Stun/Kill option on it . Marcus (beaker)

Yes, 693/909 (5 live) in the UK should be ok. Note that if you have a powered antenna (VW/Audi bee-sting, for example) then you will get *nothing* on AM without an antenna power adaptor - this is the case in my new beetle.

My tuner works great, too. I am a little surprised by the bad quality of the sound (even if there is full signal strength), but that might be due to the fact that I am not used to radio anymore. I will have to test against my Kenwood unit that I was using before.
The Empeg has not quite the same reception as my Kenwood, while the Kenwood was able to decode (both the music and the RDS) of stations with a low signal strength, the Empeg gets into a little bit of trouble.
However, this was just a few minutes of testing and weather conditions might have been non-ideal for such a test. :) I will use the unit some more next week (especially on the highway) and try to see how well it performs there.

AM worked fine on mine, about 5 strong signals ( 5 live, Virgin, and a few local stations ), even parked alongside the house. - --

Thanks for the replies guys. I've got a BMW with the antenna in the rear window. Don't know if it has an amp on it. It picks up FM fine so I don't think that this is the problem. I did manage to get Virgin but it was very faint & didn't show up on the signal strength meter at all. Could there be something wrong with the AM part of the circuit in the Tuner? I've been round all the frequencies several times but it's always the same. I do get a medium strength signal right at the bottom end of the range but it's just noise. The car's in for it's MOT until tomorrow so I can't fiddle until then.

It's a powered antenna. My beetle picked up FM fine without power, but no AM; see:
http://www.autotoys.com/New_Tech/Misc_Info/bmwant/body_bmwant.htm
...it appears that there is a white antenna power wire in the BMW harness.

aha!!!... Thanks Hugo. I'll have a look at this when I get the car back tomorrow. I guess the antenna is tuned more for the shorter wavelengths of FM than the longer wavelengths of AM, which is why it picks up FM reasonably well. Or am I talking complete b*ll*cks? Marcus (beaker)

I've no idea, which is why I wasn't doing the tuner module's PCB design with its stripline track thingummies...

OK, I got the car back from having new rear suspension bushes fitted & a new MOT. I've added the Tuner extension cable and joined the Blue flying lead to the White on the BMW loom and I can now receive AM fine. FM is also improved. Since your last reply I've taken another look at the installation instructions and it does mention that AM reception can be particularly affected where you have an antenna amp which doesn't have any power going to it. s'pose I shouldn't have been in such a hurry to get it fitted. Classic case of RTFM.
thanks again... Marcus (beaker)

For anyone with poor reception you might want to try adding an amplifier if your car doesnt have one. I live in a pretty bad area for most stations but bought a little booster from Maplin (£7.99) - reception is a lot better and im able to pick up a lot more stations. Very simple to fit. Just a small pen-sized unit that plugs in between your tuner module and the antenna cable, and connects to the tuner's power feed.

I received my tuner module last Friday, the only email I got was the one telling me it had been dispatched (apart from the email Rob sent a month or two ago saying they were available, but on the wrong side of the Atlantic!) Geoff ---- ------- Got one of the first Mark 2 empegs...

Wow, I got my tuner yesterday. Can't believe it. Finally! I'll install it in the weekend and post my impressions.
