Yeah, it is cute but a bit pricey. That is the kind of thing I can see Apple outsourcing the development to someone else since it is not their main market. Empeg guys, did Rio have anything to do with this?

I think it was an in-house effort; the ID definitely was (look at the videos on the site).

Mucho cute though, I really want one... 1.8" HDD.... mmmmm. Don't have a firewire mac to connect it to, which is a slight hitch though - it's not PC compatible at all.

Pity 5G is pretty small and 1.8" drives don't come bigger than 5G at the moment!

Even with the lessening of the 'not invented here' attitude at Apple, outsourcing development of products is still something they really wouldn't do.

I've not seen 1.8" drives anywhere before now.. I wonder who makes them.

Toshiba: they're PCMCIA drives. I suspect apple don't have an internal PCMCIA slot but instead have integrated everything onto one board except for the drive mechanics.

Maybe, but they are not above doing it for some things. Look at iTunes, FinalCutPro, or PowerSchool. All products they bought from other companies and then rebranded. Granted those examples are all software.

Not a bad price, considering the List Price on the 1.8" drive alone is $399 from Toshiba!

ok so I would have to use a mac with firewire. I am still tempted to get one. I do have an older mac the runs os x and I should be able to add a firewire card.
what does everyone think about the possibility of being able to connect the unit to a mac and download the files off my pc over a network ? then I could just keep one copy instead of having a copy on the mac too

too bad it doesn't have ethernet instead or firewire

Should work. I have all my mp3s on my file server and iTunes on my mac has no problems accessing them over a netatalk share.

Now, from a portability standpoint, there's no competition. I wonder, though, how something like this would compare to other products...say, Creative's Nomad JukeBox products. Certainly you can get more storage on a Nomad for the same price. How does the player software compare, for example?

I'm not to keen on it being closed off to the Mac, and I'm wondering what the appeal is of this product. I haven't played with or have any basis for comparing portable players...can somebody give me a rundown of advantages/disadvantages of the different players?

my mac has no problems accessing them over a netatalk share

I acquired a Mac G4 Cube running OS X, but I'm not familiar with the Mac OS and I haven't really spent any time on that machine. It's running on the wireless LAN in my apartment using an Airport card. I'm interested in setting up my network so the Mac can access shares on my Windows boxes...what do I need to do this? What is this netatalk you speak of...is that it?

Just not my area of expertise...

netatalk is open source software that lets computers running some sort of unix OS speak appletalk (Mac OS file/printer shareing). It is similar to Services for Macintosh under WinNT.

If you aren't using netatalk or SFM you should still be able to connect to PC shares from OSX by selecting 'Connect to server' from the Go menu and typing smb://IP_Address/sharepoint into the address area.

There isn't a SMB/CIFS browser (AKA Network Neighberhood) for OS X yet so you need to actually type in the address and share point like above. You also need the latest version of OSX (10.1) for this to work.

And don't forget OS X 10.1 comes with Samba - could easily access a shared directory on a Windoze PC with the Samba client and grab the mp3s that way.

Oops, mcomb just said basically this further down. There are one or two third party samba clients for OS X that do have a network browser too. I have been using Sharity - if you are a student you can get a free version (although it only lets you connect to 2 machines at a time)

netatalk uses the appletalk protocol - Mac OS X 10 can't connect to appletalk shares (it can serve them though). 10.1 can access appletalk shares, but I've heard there are issues with connecting to netatalk servers (ie. it doesn't). Go with samba.

And I bet my Mac Plus 128K isn't new enough, either

How much does the cheapest FireWire-capable Macintosh cost?

As you said, 10.1 can access appletalk shares just fine. Also there is a patch for netatalk to use the IP based version of Appletalk which all versions of OS X can connect to (look for netatalk+asun, actually I think this has been patched into the main tree since 1.5). Also, OSX has no problems connecting to recent versions of netatalk (I use 1.5pre8). Anyway, using the smb mounter is probably easier in this case. I was just explaining what netatalk is.

As a sidenote, you can also use a Windows 2000 server with the Appletalk option installed which will allow a Mac to access the Windows server through the Chooser without the need for 3rd party software. I use this setup over my ethernet lan and it works great.

No chooser for file sharing, but in finder, under the GO menu is a CONNECT TO SERVER pick. Ok I just looked at the online help. This lets you hook up to appleshares, nfs, samba and a couple more types.
================
http://www.pjbox.com/ These have been available in 20gb versions. $595. 6gig-$495. USB connectivity for both pc and mac. 10 hr run time.

For those prices a complete set of accessories are included. World wide power supply, Cassette adaptor, headphones, 12vdc adaptor, Case w/belt clip.
It uses a Set/CD/Track organization.

Yup. Nice industrial design, easy to use and best of all it's fairly inexpensive. I wonder if Apple will ever make an indash player (although I doubt it)

I will say, it looks like the interface is better than other portables out there. However, I'm still never going to get a portable until it has an interface like my Empeg + Remote. Sorry, but once you hit the ~500 song mark, trying to find a specific song sucks, I don't care how well you organize them. Plus, I'm too lazy to do much song organization anyway :).

I guess he was talking of the interface the remote provides. Imagine a portable that has the empeg interface, and the "remote" keypad built in. Nice.
