If you are ever trying to figure out why your PC won't recognize your Empeg on the USB port, do what I did. Reboot your PC several times and then your Empeg too. Try every combination possible of boot sequences - Empeg first, then PC, vice versa, etc. Reinstall the Emplode software, check about a thousand times to be sure the cables are plugged in ok. Replace the cable with a different one. If you have done all this, then you might want to check that the USB cable is not firmly plugged into the Ethernet port on the back of the Empeg. Apparently the square end of the USB cable fits quite nicely in the Ethernet RJ-45 jack, so nicely it feels just like it was made to go there... And instead of looking, I was doing it by feel . Just thought you'd like to know that.... I'll be banging my head against the wall because it feels good for a while now...

If you plug the USB cable into the player's ethernet port, you will bend the pins and ruin the ethernet port.

I know, I did this once.

Fortunately, I was able to repair it, but it was tricky. Use extreme caution with the pins and don't have the player plugged in when you do it.

I'm on a 100 baseT network at school. I've got a normal 10/100baseT hub running in my dorm. I've got my computer and my empeg hooked up to it. The empeg is connected via a cross-over cable. The empeg gets an valid IP and everything, but emplode can't find it on the network. Any ideas? I did specify the IP. Lately I've just been using the USB.

There is your problem, if your empeg is connected to the hub, it requires a straight ethernet cable, not a crossed one.

cya!

If the hub has a MDI-X port (also called an uplink port) connect the crossover into that port instead (usually on the far right end and may be switchable between MDI and MID-X (X or | |). That will un-cross the wires.

Edit: If your empeg gets an IP address (and it's actually getting an address over the network and not making one up on it's own) then you should be connected ok.

Have you looked through the ethernet troubleshooting section in the FAQ?

Thanks Tony - I install networks for a living and see RJ-45 jacks in my sleep. so I'll take a look and straighten it out. Thanks for the heads up.

I am running WinXP and gave up trying to get the USB to work...so I went out and bought a Linksys router and now everything is peachy...and the router gives me an extra level of security on my broadband internet to boot

I think quite a few people make this mistake - I often get players with contacts on the Ethernet port out of position.

If the contact is pushed up far enough it fall out of its slot and into the next one along. It's easily fixable with a scalpel point from inside the player.

All the more reason to only use Ethernet on the player

(I have used USB probably 3 times on mine. Once when I first got it, and the other two times in the car)
