Hi Gadget dude!
I am very interested in a Empeg unit and Im in the Uk near reading where are you ?
I dont know enough about the differences between mk1 and mk11. Apart from cosmetic are all facilites the same ?
Acording to the sonic blue site last cost for 10gig mk11 were £140 GBP is that correct ?
So I would be prepared to pay in the low hundreds dependent on condition. If its still available please emailme on M@x_g@hotm@il.com (replacing the 1st and last @ with a)

cheers
Max

The mk1 and mk2 are different in many more ways apart from cosmetics - see the faq on www.riocar.org for more info.

Thanks Hugo,

I have read the Faq and understand some of the differences, however the question I am about to ask is probably only answerable by yourself who I understang created the origional concept "absolute respect!" of something so fantastcally origional in and practical It is a great shame to see it mis managed by SB. Onway I dont know why they EOL it so on with the question. I currently Use a Pioneer DEH p945R headunit digital 3way xover Time alignment built in etc and with the help of the service manual and the nice Crystal semiconductors I have modified it to accept a reclocked SPdif input, however allthough I understand the procedure to add spdif output from the MK2a player is available Is it possible to do the same to a mark 1 ?
In other respects the MK1 ( if the develompment kernals are still being updated as new features get developed) may be more suitable for my needs due to its intended recipient in a 94 NSX where I will use the origional stereos buttons to control the 4 buttons on the Empeg and It also has a FM tuner currently my tuner is on annoying US fm stepping.
How do you think the mk1 rates for wav audio ? can it be upgraded with 2 of the large 2.5" drives ? Unfortunately I missed the recent sale hear in the UK and SB won't ship interanationally. My other option is the Phatbox but youll probably curse me for mentioning it, I dont think its as customisable but CD changer emulation is nice !
Cheers

Actually, there's not an actual "procedure" for adding spdif outputs to the car player. There is some space on the motherboard where, if you decided to do some significant electronics hacking and wanted to write the software yourself, you could do it.

It's not needed, though. Its built-in output stage is extremely good.

I didn't think there was software necessary to write to accomplish that hack.

Mk1 or mk2 can be modified to add spdif, but we're talking about needing to make a small PCB, etc. It's not a simple hack.

The mk1 is less suitable for large drive upgrades as it has less ram, and so holding a big database can cause problems with caching. Remember the biggest mk1 ever sold was 20G ISTR. The audio output suffers from more noise problems and the built-in FM tuner isn't particularly sensitive.

Carplayer.com will ship to the UK, too. You could always try mailing david@empeg.com and seeing if there are any rios left after the current ones go out - there may be ones whose cards were declined (or whatever) which are now free.

The phatbox is a different kettle of fish; it allows you to do a stealth install, but is less satisfying for the music junkie who likes to organise their collection (ie, exactly who the empeg was aimed at).

I think David already has a "reserve list" of people a mile long.

Thanks Hugo for all your help, Unfortunately David must have been inundated with requests as he gives me the standard "no and no more will be made " response. Oh well it looks like thats the end of a dream ..
As I work for Sony I'll probably end up buying one of our new units as we now do a hdd-mp3 encoder but its the locked down nature of this solution that puts me off, noone seems to value creativity for endusers that Empeg did.
In terms of the spdif out, yes I understand its not a simple mod but then nothing in life thats worthwhile ever seems simple.
Cheers and thanks once again.

I would probably use the CS84 series transmitter chips as I have used them before
