Printable RioCar.Org FAQ
I am not responsible for mass deforstation due to this link
I'll look into making an independant category one so that people can either have page breaks between them, or just easially print out that part.

147 pages according to my print preview here. Alas I don't have my Mac right now, so I can't just say "print to PDF".
I still remember the HP48 FAQ I printed a long time ago. That was huge. But a night job alone at an ISP lead to a quick "printer speed test"

Still coming up with a gray background for me. I know it doesn't matter when printed, but it makes some of the photos look bad on the screen...
Haven't proofread to make sure the formatting is preserved yet...
Can this be a tiny link at the top of the FAQ page ("Printable Version")?

Umm, I certanly didn't have a mistake in the BODY tag that used to look like this:
<BODY BACKGROUND="#FFFFFF" TEXT="#000000">
Umm, yeah... (It's fixed).
Grey is what it was using for you since thats your default background color.
And I'll get around to adding a link later, I sense the end of this call coming (I'm at 2 hours OT and counting right now...)

Cool. Now i'll have something to do next time i'm in the computer lab at 3 in the morning. Ah the glories of laser printers paid for by Someone Else.
The inevitable feature request:
Can php spit it out as a PDF with indexed page numbers? I saw it done at linux world once :-) It would be a fun hack, but not necessary unless you actualy enjoy that kind of thing.

As I hinted at earlier, if I really wanted a PDF of it, I'd just print it from any browser on OS X to PDF.
But you do have me looking at the PDF code for PHP, no promises though.

You can do it with a PC also, if you have Adobe Acrobat installed. All you have to do is say print, and then select Acrobat Distiller.
It's definitely not as obvious as OSX...

I'd just convert it directly, using either ps2pdf or pstopdf on Linux.

Rad.
I know there's gotta be a gazillion ways to do it. I wasn't trying to say "My way is better than your way" or anything stupid like that. I just thought I'd mention a way to do it with a PC, 'cause it sounded like Drakino wasn't able to do it with the machine he's currently using.
BTW, if anyone wants a copy of the FAQ in PDF format, I can email it to 'em if they want. It's 887K.

Well, for comparison, the hijack FAQ page on riocar.org came in at 23 pages, or 152K, when converted to PDF. But, that also includes the frivolus extra stuff, like the title bar and borders.
BTW, cool new pic Mark. Where was that one taken?

Okay, I think the software source code is still larger than that, but the memory footprint is about the same (though not that large overall since Hijack kernels are built without the FramePointer option).

This is more in response to "everyone else" than you, as I think you understand. The real value of having a PHP generated printable pdf would be in being able to have the index corespond to the actual page numbers instead of just section numbers, so you can find what you're looking for that much easier.
It'd be a nice feature once Tony starts selling the limited edition leather bound with gold lettering Complete Unadulterated Faq with directors comentary and Dolby 5.1 digital surround soundtrack.

What? Hijack can't decode dolby surround? I'm sending my player back. The screen's too tiny to watch DVDs on anyways.

The print option is now in the FAQ code, and sections work as well.
PDF is probably a ways off, but I might keep it in mind for RioCar.Org v2.

Great piece of work. Any chance in-document hyperlinks (aka anchor tags) could be incorporated into this? Ie. in order to be able to jump from a question in the index to the corresponding answer spot in the document?
I'll probably put it on my Visor then and actually read it completely.

Easy enough hack, I'll look into it soon. I'll probably have a way of toggling it so that the printed version dosen't have to have underlines on every question.

PDFs can have links in them, for a printable and onscreen-viewable FAQ.

Ok, the new code is online to allow links or not. Simply hit the FAQ print pages to enable or disable the links.
Also, this will not strip out links from the FAQ. That could get a bit messy searching that much content to try and strip them out.

Yeah, i'm not really opposed to links, but they're a feature outside the "printable faq" realm, as the idea behing a printable faq is to strip out the non printable information. Perhaps "downloadable faq" would be a better name. It's really not important though...

Although having the "option" for links is a neat one, why even bother with it as an option? Why not just have the links work?
The only difference it makes in the printed version is that the TOCs are underlined. Why not just have them on all the time? Surely it can't be a bad thing to have the TOC entries underlined in the printout? Anyone?

Great!
However: sorry, to bring this up again, but the printable FAQ won't display with Netscape 4.x.
The rather concise hyperlinks from the switch page ( HREF="?links=1") and ( HREF="?links=2") are not padded onto the base hyperlink http://www.riocar.org/printfaq.php, but instead added to the server name http://www.riocar.org/, resulting in http://www.riocar.org/?links=1 and http://www.riocar.org/?links=2, respectively. This is how I would expect it to work anyway. Internet Explorer is sloppy on this and constructs the follow-up links as intended.
So, you will have to at least write HREF="printfaq.php?links=1" unless you want to keep off all Netscape 4.x users.
However, the switch page is simply odd and doesn't go well with such a well-designed site. Why not make two separate hyperlinks in the first place?
Something like this:
Printable version of the entire FAQ: with and without intra-document hyperlinks.

Grr, thats actually not IE sloppyness, it's a bug in Netscape 4.x. 6.x fixes it. It's not easy to tell this, but I have an old test page set up for this when I found it a while back.
The whole printable FAQ is just a hack into the site right now. Everytime I sit down to do v2 of the site, I get distracted on something like this, and it adds more code into the migration nightmare.
I'll look into a quick fix someday.
