Well, I had the pleasure of meeting Hugo (altman himself) and Tony Fabris today. Hugo is in town (San Jose) showing the MK2 to the FCC aparently. He was nice enough to give Tony and myself a demo.

The unit that he had still has the MK1 face so nothing new there (although I was excited because this was the first time I had seen either unit in person). Hugo took the unit apart and let us look at the guts. We spent nearly two hours talking about the Mark2 and Empeg in general.

With Hugo's permission I grabbed a pic of the back of the unit for those of you trying to determine how best to mount it. You can find it here...

http://macgeek.dyndns.org/empeg/empeg_back.jpg

This shows (from upper left to lower right) connector for laptop style lock, new docking connector, power connector, USB, Ethernet, serial, and RCA jacks.

There is also a pic of (from left to right) Tony, myself, and Hugo at...

http://macgeek.dyndns.org/empeg/geeks.jpg

if anyone is interested.

The inside of the Mark2 (sorry I didn't get a pick) is very impressive. Very clean and less cluttered than I would have expected.

I am sure tfabris will have some more commentary on the meeting when he gets back to a computer. I just wanted to post that pick of the back of the Empeg and say thanks to Hugo for taking the time to show off. I am going to get back to enjoying the beautiful weather now.

Aww, you could at least have let Hugo stand on a box! ;-)

Thanks Mike for the quick post.

Question: this connector for laptop style lock, will that allow fix the unit securely in the car?

The laptop lock socket is intended for securing the unit out of the car - mainly for companies demonstrating the player at shows, or for those that take their player into work.

Sorry about that guys. I am still working out the details of keeping apache happy when my IP changes (stupid dynamic IP). Anyway, it should be working again. If I have more problems I will through the pics up at some picture album posting site so that I am sure everyone can get to them.

Thanks Mike. Pictures now received.

I must say I was dissapointed to see the petty and irresponsible heightist comments made by supposedly intelligent and respected people in this thread.

I actually would have expected Tony and Mike to have done the honorable thing and been prostrated before Hugo in the photo. Or at least they could have been kneeling?

Cheers
Jon

(Bowing and kneeling) "We're not worthy! We're not worthy!"

All kidding aside, Hugo was a nice guy, very down-to-earth about everything. Just another Linux geek showing off his toys.

Thanks for the photos.

The position of the docking connector exactly hits my needs!
But tell me - who of you guys took away one screw of the connector? Wanted to unmount the board, didn't you?

It's a long standing tradition, if you can't talk down to the boss, who can you talk down to? Actually, you have to talk down to him else he probably wouldn't hear what you were saying.

Tony --

I (and I suspect a lot of other people) are expecting a very long, detailed posting of your adventures with Hugo. Tell us more!

Yep, just hadn't gotten to it yet.

I read the bbs from the bottom to the top, so it's in chronological order. Should have looked more closely at the thread headers, I guess...

Pretty silly of me, actually. I can't imagine anything short of nuclear war or massive earthquake and tsunami that would have kept Tony from making an elaborate posting abut meeting the legendary Hugo!

PaulH -- what's going on that all the recent posts (last couple of hours) are being date-stamped as 1/6/00?

Never mind -- I forgot that your Brits not only drive on the wrong side of the road, but you write your dates backwards as well.

Err, it IS the 1/6/00, in England anyway.

It's just that in the US, we typically write it as 6/1/00.

I know, I know, it doesn't make much sense, but if you say it to yourself it does.

Like in numbers, 1/6/00 makes more sense because you sort of write them in order of which moves the fastest, so to speak.

But in speach, it sounds better to say,"June 1st, 2000" (6/1/00). At least it does to me :(

I don't know. I don't care...

PaulH knew this was going to come up. He even said so.

Personally, if I were king of the world, I'd standardize all dates in yyyy/mm/dd fashion so that a standard alphanumeric sort would always result in properly ordered dates.

...I guess the date format is one of the problems of having an international BBS:) Personally, I wish that the BBS would correct the TIME for the local timezone.. I can never tell how old posts really are without doing complex mathematics (addition/subtraction) in my head:)

Funny, I don't have trouble with the time shift. I just know that England is eight hours later than California. I think it's only fitting that the BBS displays England time, since it's in England and so is Empeg.

I know what you mean dionysus, when I was in Japan it was even more difficult. I had to add/subtract BIG numbers. ;)

I use dates of that form in all the release notes and stuff. I've been writing things that will be read on both sides of the Atlantic recently and it is the only format that is completely unambiguous to everyone.

Besides, YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS.FFF is ISO standard :)

(well, not sure about the F's, but I'm pretty sure that minutes are N's).
