Interesting. The "preview" window on the Japanese Organic EL site uses animated GIFs for their previews. If you rightclick and save them to disk, they seem to open right up in the Jemplode animation editor. They're huge (60 frames) so not particularly suitable as a bootup animation, but it certainly looks do-able. Haven't actually tried sending one to the player yet. Anyone think of any reason why a 60-frame animation might be harmful to the player's health? Are there safeguards in the Jemplode animation editor to prevent users from doing something bad?

Deleting every other frame in those 60-frame animations results in a fairly nice little 30-frame number that might just be appropriate for the player. Gonna give it a shot.

Yep, works like a charm. You can have your player boot up to swooping F-18s if you like.

Now all we need is the empeg guys to add a visual that will show a custom animation that we can upload, or even better, multiple animations that will switch with the songs.

im telling ya toby, you need to make a visual that can play or loop these animations with the songs, the people will love it, besides if they really must go with the music, you can ahve the frames advance to the beat, that would be slick as well.
visuals - thats for toby to find it

That would be great if someone could figure out how to get the cool volume animations from that website onto the empeg

Right, that's my point.
Whereas the Pioneer and Kenwood images are simply looping animations, Toby's visuals actually change depending on the type of music being played. Some, such as funnelweb, keep surprising you with the different patterns that appear. I consider that a lot less boring than a looping 60-frame animation.

i'm not talking about the little movies....they are perfect for the startup screen and that is about it....i'm talking about basic utlities like the volume where the graphics would show a different looking meter going up or down like on the Pioneer website...

You mean like a little bar that goes across the screen when you increase the volume.
I think i might of seen that before

I can see what burdell1 is saying. I enjoy the built in visuals, they are great, but being able to import new ones cant harm. The first two 'level indicators' on the Pioneer site are pretty cool looking and could supplement some of the already excellent visuals.

Okay the cube like thing if empegifed and done by toby could be cool.
But how many different visuals can the pioneer support i would be suprised if it is more than 5
I do think that lot of the empeg ones are very good indeed, funnel web, hula hoops, being a couple of my faves

If toby did the cube visual it would spin, changing direction with the beat and each moving column would be tied to a particular frequency range on a particular channel...

Toby implemented a cube on Rio Central which has a different visual on each face, and which moves around to the beat.

In reply to:

Wasn't that what the BeOS people always used as an example of why Be was the Best Thing Since Sliced Bread? Anyways, are these randomly selected visuals from the other visuals or are there six cube-specific visuals?

Tody is the person that designed all of the visuals for the empeg/RioCar and the Rio Central.

It's been around for about two years - just about every Pioneer head unit uses it now. We considered it for a not-to-be Mk.3 empeg, although at the time it had serious burn in issues (it was necessary to invert the screen periodically).

My friend bought a Pioneer MP3 CD player with the OEL display (after seeing my nice shiny new empeg! - to give him credit he did try and get an empeg). The display is quite nice - a lot smaller than the empeg display, but hence appears crisper due to the same resolution. Graphics are very nice and smooth, but it's so boring just to have an animation looping with no attempt to make it be affected by the music.
Other than that, it's an adequate unit - allows you to change front and rear eq settings individually (where have we seen *that* before?), and actually generates an EQ curve as you alter the parameters, which is something I'd love to see on the empeg.
But considering it RRPs over here for £600 (and even though he only paid £450), it seems vastly overpriced IMO - my JVC SH99RB MP3 CD player does almost everything his does (without the fancy display), and sounds to me to have a better inbuilt amp (although it's hard to tell as we have completely different cars/speakers), and only cost me £260.
And my empeg only cost £400, but that's hardly relevant as it's worth a hell of a lot more to me
Cheers,
A.
