I am back in contact with Rob Schofield, and we are organising the European meet now. Announcements should be ready within the next couple of days.

The date is confirmed as June 15th, with fun events from the 14th through to the 16th - so make a weekend of it!

Full details soon.

Here's a quick summary of the events that we are organising for this year's European meet in Amersfoort.

It will be necessary to charge for the meet (and some of the associated events) this year. In previous years Rob Schofield has taken on a considerable financial burden to host the meet, and in addition SONICblue marketing have made contributions. This year I believe it is unreasonable for Rob to be out of pocket once again, and SB automotive marketing no longer exists! I think you will find the contributions to be very reasonable, however.

The meet will span three days, and everyone is welcome to join us for some or all of the weekend. There will be a signup form on the web within the next few days so we will know how many to expect. Details of the hotel will also be posted. Twin rooms are listed at 63 Euro's per night on the Campanile web site, however I will try to negotiate a group rate.

Friday 14th June

6pm Meet at the Campanile Hotel bar for drinks and introductions.

8pm Dinner at Klauf - a great restaurant and bar with a varied menu, including the most amazing all-you-can-eat ribs. Meal cost with drinks typically 15 - 20 Euro's per person.

Saturday 15th June

12pm Meet at the Campanile, where we will have a private conference room with tea and coffee.

Events throughout the afternoon will include:

Introductions and distance travelled competition
Lunch buffet with beer and icecream
Sound quality, pro install and self install competitions
Presentation from the SB guys - check out Rio Central, and be the first to see our MP3 DJ concepts
Sound Quality Tweak competition - how good are you with the EQ?
Techie Q&A featuring the geeks from SB
The time honoured empeg knowledge quiz
Raffle with fantastic prizes including a Mk.2 empeg Car player signed by the empeg team

SB guys expected at the meet include Rob, Mike, John R, John G, Peter and Roger. We also hope that Patrick (former empeg hardware designer) will be there with prototypes of his new tuner module kit!

The expected charge for the entire afternoon including lunch buffet and entry into the raffle and other competitions is 20 Euro's. This will be confirmed nearer the time when we know how many people to expect (we just need to cover costs).

6pm Monster BBQ in Rob Schofield's garden

Rob & Merrigan have kindly offered to host an evening BBQ which will be a great opportunity to chew the fat with your fellow empeg owners and developers (or you could go for some of the lean offerings if you prefer).

This will cost about 10 Euro's per person including delicious fayre, great local beer and soft drinks (again, to be confirmed).

Sunday June 16th

10am Car Treasure Hunt

Assemble with your cars at the Campanile for the start of Merrigan's car treasure hunt. There is no entry fee, and there will be some cool prizes donated by SB.

12pm Lunch in Amersfoort

This will be an opportunity to say Bon Voyage until next year. The venue will be chosen nearer the time.

More information to follow soon!

Would people attending like an official meet T-shirt? If so, this is likely to cost about 20 EUR (this is what our supplier charges for 2-sided, 2 colours in small volumes - if anyone has a better supplier... they're nice shirts, the same as the last meet)

Damn! I sure wish I could be there, especially since it's not that far from where I am. (only a couple of hundred k's I guess).

Sadly it's not possible for me to attend since I'm in the middle of my finals.

Just an idea, would love to come and meet you all, just don't trust myself on those european roads.

Rob has just reminded me I'm under an NDA and I am unfortunately not allowed to release any details in a public place. I'm sorry folks, but it just looks as if you'll all have to come along and see for yourselves...

Book the long weekend, get the cheapest flight you can get, bend the credit card and get here. You could win the distance prize! I'll even pick you up from the airport...

Geez it is tempting but I am sure the flight would be expensive this close to the date. And I have no passport and all that happy horseshit. The credit card is empty at the moment but would take me many, many months to pay off if I come. I've never been over the pond before.

Well what would the prize be for living the farthest away?

After checking prices last night, it would be anywhere between $2000-$5000 for a flight, I won't be making it for sure unless I win the lottery. Fat chance of that because I never buy tickets

Oh well.

man those prices are high! When I flew to Detroit and back last March (from Düsseldorf, which is less than 2 hours drive from the meet) I only paid around US$400 for the return flight!! Heck, I can fly to New Zealand and back for $1200, and you can't get any further from here than that! (well unless you want to land in the water that is )

Yeah I couldn't believe those prices but a quick check around my usual sources reveals that they aren't too far outside the ball park! The cheapest I found for CVG to AMS on June 13 - 17 was with Delta via JFK at about $1500 including taxes. That's pretty scarey, and it even includes a Saturday.

I even tried Dayton and Louisville flights and couldn't find a better deal. If it had been $400 I would have booked it. It's a shame there isn't an airfare war going on right now. But even $1500 is well out of my range.

Having a chance at winning the distance prise, does it matter how I get to Amersfoort?

Oslo - Amersfoort is a 16 hour drive and 1250 k's tarmac. Taking the ferry from Oslo to Kiel in Germany, i only have to drive 520 k's after a good night sleep on the boat.

But if taking the ferry puts the distance price at stake, the road is mine - all the way!

Here's the line I'm thinking along currently:

The point of the distance prize is essentially to reflect the amount of effort you have made to attend the meet. Therefore I have come up with a scaling factor according to the type of transport utilised for any given stage of the journey (from home to the Campanile).

Driven (car or motorcycle) : 1 mile according to odometer = 1 competition mile
Public Transport (plane, train, bus or ferry): 2 miles as the crow flies = 1 competition mile

I haven't bothered with a walking/cycling factor as I doubt that would be conclusive in the competition

What do you think?

Rob

Good point - the driver should get the mileage (otherwise everyone in the car would tie break for the prize) however in the case of a pool where one person had completed a longer journey than the eventual driver I can see we will need a specific ruling.

It's going to be impossible to determine who was driving when, so I propose that everyone in a car can claim the full mileage, however if a group from the same vehicle win (because they will have all travelled the same distance) then they must nominate the final winner from their group. This would most likely be whoever did most of the driving.

We really should have dropped this particular competition

Would be cool to see you over here! As far as climbing goes, there are some places not sooo far away from the Netherlands where you can climb. Can send you some suggestions if you are interested ... Hey, if you are coming over how about slipping one of the 4 way SMD resistors and a soldering bolt in your bag. That's about the only part of the button hack that I'm not sooo keen on trying myself if I don't have to. Would be willing to supplement payment with good German beer

Why don't you base it on which ever player has travelled farthest? The owner of the car would probably be the winner. Everyone brings their player to these things don't they?

Hmm, jripley and I were toying with the idea of being dropped off at Hoek and cycling the rest of the way... that would have depended on someone having bike racks, though. Cambridge to Harwich plus Hoek to Amersfoort isn't feasible except over two days, and the ferry times aren't friendly.

Hi Mark,

If you'd like to go climbing the alps, i could take you with me after the meet. Best airport to fly back would be Zürich/Switzerland. If you arrive there early on Friday, i could pick you up there and take you with me to Amersfoort....
Think about it...

Hi Mark.

Well, if you take a flight over the pod, I will pay your hotel room (at the hotel everyone else will stay at) for up to three nights. Can't afford paying anything else for you though.
Oh, there is one condition to this: Bring your soldering iron, my two empegs need to get a certain resistor pack soldered in ;-) I can handle soldering the rest of the illuminated buttons kit, I guess, but the resistor pack is absolutely beyond my skills.
If anyone else chimes in for this, I guess we should share the cost, and if enough people chime in, Mark's complete stay (including meals and beverages) might be covered.

If Mark won't come over, is there anybody else willing and able to solder in that resistor pack?

Yay! Really hope he does! And it would also help if he brought a few resistor packs along too (I don't have a button kit yet). As I think I said somewhere else, that is the only bit of the button upgrade that I'm not looking forward to doing myself. Of course he would have to be reimbursed

Patrick or Mark, I don't mind who does it ...

You guys are like, way too generous with your offers!

I just looked into tickets -- Canada to Amsterdam "costs" 60000 airline points -- but there are no "points" seats left for dates near the meet. Bummer.

Just as well, I suppose -- my current client (kernel work) wants me in California around then.

Cheers

Düsseldorf (Germany) is not much futher from the meet than Amsterdam, and I would be more than happy to drive you over if you can get suitable points flights. We're talking a European "not much further" here too, not a Canadian one - ~130km/1 hour further. You *could* even fly to California from here - it's not like you are going to need to be there over the weekend or anything (they do still have weekends in the US don't they?).

Think I could probably manage to pitch in with Sven on that Accomodation deal too. Of course the same condition would apply

Hi Mark.

There are some possible routes when you fly over the pod. These are the most likely ones to work out well:
  1. Fly to Amsterdam (you already ruled that one out)
  2. Fly to Duesseldorf (or Dusseldorf in some strange countries) like Derek suggested.
  3. Fly to Frankfurt/Main (FFM), I could pick you up down there, "only" a two/three hour drive from my home.
  4. Fly to Dortmund (DTM) via Munich. Again, I could pick you up from there (only 5min. drive from my home, at most).
The flight to Dortmund via Munich usually works extremely well, and the extra hop is often included in the intercontinental flight to Munich. Also, the checkout at Dortmund is _much_ quicker than the one at Frankfurt, Munich (you would skip that checkout as a transit visitor) or Amsterdam.
If you can't get flights that arrive on Thursday/Friday and leave on Sunday, I could also offer you accomodation at Dortmund (in one of our two guest sleeping rooms).

But then again, if your client won't let you go, we will just have a drink or two and celebrate HiJack that way.

cu,
sven

I'm surprised nobody remarked on this, quoth Rob:

Presentation from the SB guys - check out Rio Central, and be the first to see our MP3 DJ concepts

I, for one, am very interested in the "MP3 DJ concepts", and am looking about for which piece of software to put on my laptop for doing live MP3 DJ'ing (whereas right now, I just haul around hundreds of CDs). I'd love to use a Rio/Empeg solution instead. Somebody please take good notes during this presentation and post the information here!

Okay, I checked out the other cities, and some slightly different dates. First thing is, this is a long enough journey that I refuse to go in cattle cla.. err.. "economy".

The airline (Air Canada / Lufthansa / United) says no seats left in business class, so that leaves First Class, which only has June 11 (Monday) available, which is too early for me (work). Darn.

So I'm going to have to pass on it this time, thanks.

Actually, you know, I'm just completely floored by the folks on this thread (among others).

Perhaps I'll plan a climbing trip to Europe for the end of summer or something, and arrange it so I can meet some of you nice people --> and drop in at SB on the way through.

Anybody over there into rock-climbing or mountaineering?

Cheers

Yep. However we don't have that many mountains over here in Holland, so usually Belgium (limestone) or the Alps are very good alternatives... Maybe a small 'climbing' meet when you are in Europe?

Hi Mark,

yes - I am a rock-climber. Here in Switzerland you would be in the heart of Europe with the most beautiful mountains. I go every week at least one day climbing... and I did it for years now.
I even was climbing in the states:
http://www.guschti.ch/?dir=Albuquerque%20Summer%202000%2FWeek%2003%20-%20Climbing
But on my site http://www.guschti.ch you'll also find nice pictures from switzerland.
example: http://www.guschti.ch/?dir=Swiss%20Army%2FNovember%202001%20-%20WK%202001%2F&startpic=48

But also Italy has a lot of nice rock-climbing areas.
If you once make it to Europe we should go a couple days.

Please check out Zuerich/Switzerland, too. I could also pick you up in Basel, Strassbourg or Stuttgart. Although i dont't know, if there are transatlantic flights.

Refer to next quotation from Rob:
"Dinner at Klauf - a great menu including ribs endorsed by the British rib eating champion!"

Well mister Rob Schofiel... I suggest you come over to Hilversum again to train at 'de Jonghe Graaf" with your former collegea.

For all folks who thinking about what I mean here...
...well...
At a goodbye-party he managed to work away 6-7 spare-ribs . Of course with a little pressure from our side . Even the cookers came to us checking who (or what) was eating their stock away...

I'n not sure being there at friday, but I've applied for the saturday. Unfortunately I haven't build in my Empeg yet... it's brand new car and I'm too busy yet.

See you all!

Damn the Torpedoes/NDA....

For those of you with an interest in what the boys at empeg have been up to recently, it may be worth - even at this late stage - considering coming along to the meet. It's never too late!

For the Tech session/Master's class on the Saturday, Rob (and the guys) is bringing over a couple of interesting prototypes, including a Censored! There's also one of the first Censored that is being brought over by our special guest for the weekend, Censored.

For those of you guys interested in using your empegs as a mix desk (i.e. all you budding DJ's out there) there's a Censored showing the new Censored technology that Censored will be demonstrating during the day. There's also a talk by Censored planned, who will be talking about the future of the Censored, which I am certain will interest every red-blooded empeg owner out there: a direct ancestor of the Censored that we all know and love, the new Censored will be Censored Censored by Censored in Censored Censored Censored.

So all I can say is - put the dog in the kennels, lock the spouse in the shed, leave a plateful of crisps out for the kids, sell your granny for the ticket and GET YOURSELF DOWN TO THE MEET!. Be there, or be square!

P.S. Don't forget the Mega-barbie on the Saturday - complete with local tap beer (5.5%) and music of your choosing. Bring your remotes and polish up on your Search/Append technique!

Oh, and don't forget you'll be able to play with Julie, the HSX-109 prototype, the only one loose in the wild in Europe!

Sign-up for the Barby before Monday, 10th. June to make sure there's something for you to eat

I will (see other thread) be bringing a tuner prototype. If all goes well, a working one.

I will also be bringing the soldering station and some very small components, so if there are people around who would like resistor packs soldered onto display boards, this can probably be arranged.

ADDENDUM

Since everyone has been very good, I have persuaded a couple of clients that some of the work I've been doing for them in an area not entirely unrelated to the car player can be demoed. You may find it of interest.

Patrick

Directions to the Event

The location for the meet is the Campanile Hotel, Laan Naar Emiclaer, Amersfoort. The nearest motorway exit is 500m away, AMERSFOORT-Noord on the A1 Amsterdam-Apeldoorn motorway. Make sure you do not mistake this for AMERSFOORT exit.

>From the West (A1), travel *past* the Amersfoort exit in the direction Zwolle/Apeldoorn. The next exit is Amersfoort Noord.

>From the East (A1), travel through Apeldoorn, direction Amersfoort. At the Hoevelaken motorway intersection, drive on in the direction Amsterdam. Amersfoort-Noord is the next exit.

>From the South (A27), travel up the A27 to the intersection at Eemnes, and head East on the A1 towards Amersfoort. Follow instructions Eastbound (above).

>From the South (A28), head direction Zwolle/Amersfoort. DO NOT leave the motorway at Amersfoort, but continue Northbound to the Hoevelaken intersection. Follow signs A1-Amsterdam. Follow instructions Westbound (above).

>From the North (A28), follow signs Amersfoort/Utrecht. At the Hoevelaken intersection, exit following signs A1-Amsterdam. Follow instructions Westbound (above).

From Friday onwards, the route will be signposted from the motorway junction (in both directions) to the hotel. Look for signs with the "empeg" logo and follow them to the car park. On Saturday, there will be a banner marking the meeting place.

For those arriving by train, the nearest railway station is AMERSFOORT-SCHOTHORST.

At the station, catch the number 12 bus, asking for the "Laan Naar Emiclaer". Ask the driver to warn you where to get off the bus; from the bus stop, you should walk 150m in the direction of the Campanile Hotel.

For those of you wanting to travel to the meet by International train (such as the Eurostar, Thalys, or ICE links) it is possible to travel direct to AMERSFOORT as well as the local station AMERSFOORT-SCHOTHORST mentioned in the announcement. At both stations you should catch the number 12 bus to the event. Connections from Belgium go through Rotterdam or Amsterdam (Thalys/NS/BS, Eurostar from Paris, Liege & London); direct ICE connections from Germany (ICE/DB) go through Amsterdam; there are good regular connections from Rotterdam and Amsterdam to Amersfoort and Amersfoort-Schothorst. Normal sleeper cars from Germany, Switzerland and Denmark go through to Amersfoort Central direct (note you will need to book sleeper cars direct with your local train company).

The hotel address is:

Campanile Amersfoort
De Brand 50
N-3823 LM Amersfoort
Tel. : 033-4558757 - Fax : 033-4552620

There are still rooms available so those of you who are still undecided - why not come? It would be great to see you! Pick up the phone and book that room NOW.

Contact Details

In the event of problems, ring (NL) 033-4561181 (Rob Schofield), or e-mail me in advance at:

schofiel@xs4all.nl

Don't forget to reset your trip meter before you leave - maybe you'll win the distance competition!

Would that be "Kluif en Meneer de Pastoor" perhaps?
I can't find any "Klauf" in the phonebook.

I probably won't be able to attend the meet at 6,
but I could try to be in the restaurant before 8.

Phew! What an incredible weekend, the best one yet.

A full writeup to follow, but the signature sound of the weekend has to be Patrick "Incendiary" Arnold finishing yet another pyrotechnics story with "....and it just sort of went BOOM" (Roars of laughter from the listening circle of entranced listeners). What a character!

So.... the clock's already ticking for the next one - are you going to be there? Next year it's going to be bigger and better, and ... well, that would be telling, wouldn't it? Get those tickets booked now!

See you in June, 2003!

I'll be with Rob here that we need a nice and big advance notice this time, that way the tickets across the pond might not hit the wallet as hard. I'd love to take a vacation over there next year.

Oh, and same as the CA meet, if you have photos, let me know and I'll give permission to the meet gallery for uploads.

I sure hope it isn't. That's the reason I wasn't there this year. See, I always have finals in june, but they are always ended by june 27th or 28th. So I hope the meet will be at the end of the month next year, so I can be there too!

Yeah, I know.... But I can't just go up to my university and say :" hey, you know what, I'm going to the Empeg meet! Wanna delay my exams ?"

I don't think that would work.

Maybe if the professor also had an Empeg.

I don't like my odds.

So who wants to dish on any rumors they overheard at the meet? We who didn't go want to hear about new software releases, new products, or, well, just about anything.

Didn't you take some of all kind of beers back home? Or what were those clanging sounds when you packed your cars?

cheers,
Thomas

Or what were those clanging sounds when you packed your cars?

It's a fair cop!

Although I think we only brought back Leffe Tripel, Westmalle Tripel, Verboten Vrucht, and some kriek -- there were lots of other fine beers like Leffe Blond, Palm, and that local Three Rings stuff that we had to say our sad goodbyes to...

Yes, it was an incredible cool and nice weekend!!!
Patrick's stories, what a pleasure to listen to...

Thanks a LOT to Merrigan and Rob Schofield, as well to Rob Voisey for organizing this mega-event.
Even the weather was well organized. Everytime it was important not to rain, it doesn't rain at all (or just a very little).
Ohh, i had to stop for a little sleep on my run home due to the GREAT party in Merrigan and Rob's garden, which smu and i left as the last ones....

Hope to see all and many more next year!

Thanks, Thomas

Don't forget the other beer! I'm sure I saw some Radeberger, Köstritzer Schwarzbier, Diebels Alt, Königs Pilsener, Einbecher Mai-Urbock, Dunkel Urbock and Dunkel, Flensberger, Paulaner Heferweizen, Veltins, ...

So what about a Demo-VAN for next year? Much more space for more different beers.
I will bring some german stuff for you, too... (interested, if you'd like it)

cheers, Thomas

I'll do a full write up this coming weekend: there will also be a website full of photos coming soon (it's already there, but we need photos from the barbecue).

If anyone has photos from the meet, especially the barby, please get in touch.
