Once or twice a month people ask for old versions of Emplode or the car player software. You can get it at the link below. Please note that you should ONLY use the latest software. But, if you want some older stuff and have a good reason... go for it.

You're going to have to provide some compelling reasons for doing this, in which case I'll get you permission to host our copyright material. It would have been nice if that had happened before you put the content online.

Here are some of the issues I have.

1. Releases are incomplete - no release notes, GPL statement, copyright statement, source code, consumer versions etc.
2. The official server is fast and reliable, and I'm not at all convinced of the need for a mirror of current content.
3. Old beta releases are dangerous in many cases. When we delete them from the site it's because we want them buried, and (ideally) for nobody to continue to run them.

(1) is my biggest concern, (3) is the issue that I'm most open to having my views changed.

If I should take it down, just give the word. I was not attempting to anger anyone (especially empeg folk).

Maybe privately you can arrange to assure him of points 1-3?

The problem is the only Empeg software I have is the stuff that I downloaded. So, my collection is incomplete (ie. I only have the stuff I downloaded for personal use before it was taken off the server). Here is what the site looked like before I took it down:

As you can see, I am missing release notes, GPL statement, consumer version, etc. I also am mirroring software that was taken down for a reason... its instability. Furthermore, I am mirroring software that I don't own the rights to. In hindsight it was an irresponsible thing to do. If I get the blessing of the empeg guys, I will put it back up.

Too bad my Empeg came with 1.01 (I think). It would take me a while to locate the disc that came with my Mk2 (it was a CD-R).

If anyone wants to convince me of the need for an archive and/or mirror then feel free - and if you succeed I'll work out how to do it such that it is compliant with the various licences.

Right now I'm not sold on the idea - the current download site is reliable, and archived software isn't something we regularly (ever?) get asked for.

When troubleshooting your player, you should only be downgrading to the most recent non-beta prior release, which is available on the main site.

I am with Rob on this one. The only things people should be downloading and installing are either the latest official release, or the latest beta release. Nothing else. Those are the only things that should be hosted online.

In the rare instance that someone needs a copy of an old version (and I don't see why they would ever need that), they can ask one of the BBS pack rats to supply them a copy privately.

We tend to keep the previous release online for a while in case the new one turns out to have some serious problem - unless the previous one is know to have a serious problem of its own, in which case it is removed.

Not that it's an issue right at the moment, but sometimes, when a new version is released, it's hard to remember exactly what happened in a previous version when you're trying to submit a bug report, and the easiest way to find that out would be to reinstall that previous version, which is hard to do when that version isn't available.

Maybe the folks at empeg could put up an archive site that would contain old versions, but getting to it would require going through a page where you have to agree that you are aware that these versions have been deprecated for a reason.
