Isn't the 2004FP an updated version of the slightly old 2001FP? I have read good reviews about the 2001FP though. Good luck.

The 2005FP is the widescreen version which did come out much later than the 2001FP. The problem with the widescreen is that you're actually getting fewer pixels, so the arrangement better mean you'll get more use out of the ones you're getting.
The 2405FP is the stuff (geek) dreams are made of. Any It's almost affordable.

Yes it sure is  I love my new 2005, there maybe fewer pixels on the screen, but the aspect ratio is much much better, and it was an upgrade from a 15" TFT for me anyway so its worlds apart from what I have had in the past. It's great for DVD's too, if I may even hook up an old VCR so I can watch TV via PnP etc... My advice you be to put your hand in your pocket and go get a 2005 at the best price you can find, mine was just shy of £400 so I would expect you'd be able to get near $400 in the US? Cheers Cris.

I'm not sure, I didn't buy mine from Dell direct, its from aria.co.uk and it says it has a 1 year RTB warranty, I paid extra for Aria to check that there were no dead pixels on the monitor they sold me.
There doesn't seem to be any warranty information in the box ??? Weird!

Not sure if this is true or not. Somebody said that the extra you pay for the no dead pixel warranty doesn't actually make them check that screen any more than usual. The extra money you pay them just covers the hassle replacing your screen if you do end up with one you think is unsuitable.

In the 21 Dell 1905FP's I setup at work recently, I've only seen 3 dead pixels (2 on the same panel). Not bad, unless I'm just not noticing them.

The resolution of LCDs is getting to the point that it's quite hard to see dead pixels. The 1600x1200 panel in my Dell laptop has such tiny subpixels that I can't actually see the stuck on/off ones at all unless I run specific apps to help detect dead pixels.
Dead pixels on a 1280x1024 19" LCD are probably quite visible however. LCD yields have gotten quite high now due to improved technology so chance are that there really aren't any dead pixels on those 19.

I have yet to spot any dead pixels on my 20 inch Dell. I also can't see any on the two 23 inch Apple Cinema displays I have had in the house recently.
I haven't run any special apps to find any though, if I can't see them normally I don't want to know about them...
My only complaint about my Dell is that the stand sticks out too far to the front, meaning I can't get my keyboard as close to it as I would like. The Apple displays have a similar problem, but at least in that case the stand is very thin, allowing some keyboards to overlap it.

How the ?!??!?! I had to haggle Dell to give me them at $450 each like 3 months ago (initially quoted at like $525 each). Ugh, they must be coming out with a newer model. Yeah yeah, the old "should have waited for the price to drop, but then you'll want the new thing that comes out."

Has anyone seen it for under $400? I have seen the widescreen one for less than $400, but not the square one. And this is one of the few times I prefer the square version (TVs on the other hand....

Oh yeah, I have many frustrating stories of talking to Dell tech support, as do many other IT professionals that I've known. I almost didn't buy those 1905FPs because I knew I'd get no support; but they were "such a good price" that I couldn't resist. Pah, now they're $150 less, I might even buy one on my own money. Might.
Oddly, days after I ordered the Dell 1905FPs for work, I saw on the Gateway website some 19" monitors which had a similar model number. I wonder if they are also rebranded and repackaged high quality Samsung panels; maybe even the same panel as the Dells. I couldn't find that speecific info, and they didn't seem to have height adjustable base and built in USB hub, so I didn't regret my Dell purchase too much.
I'd rather buy Gateway any day. I've had great results with their service. Maybe it's more strict now, but I've had no hassle getting things replaced with Gateway.

I just dealt with them very recently, on the trivial matter of getting a proper WinXP install CD for the Notebook I had just purchased. They sent one on by courier the very next day. Not at all what I expected, though perhaps the small-business unit (which I use) is better than the others?

I think that's true for the Gateway Educational support that I deal with, may be better than others. I've heard that Dell support is great from every home user I've talked to. Dell (I.... think) even replaced the entire laptop of a user who punched a hole in the screen with his fist (of course, he had some expensive "no questions asked" replacement coverage).

When I had a Dell under warranty, I received pretty good customer support from them. Once, when they couldn't fix a problem I had over the phone, they sent a tech out to my freshman dorm room. I was pretty impressed by that.
Anyway, why do you need tech support on a monitor? There's only a small chance you'll need to call tech support for something like that, so I wouldn't base my decision on a product like this over customer support. I could care less.
Furthermore, burdell1, why are you calling customer support on a monitor I assume you don't even own yet? Do you mean you're calling their ordering line or something?

Yeah. I used to do phone tech support for monitors. 95% of the calls were "Yup, sounds bad. Here's an RMA", 4% were "Your monitor hurts your eyes because you're running at 87Hz interlaced refresh rate", and 1% were other setup problems, like "turn the power on" or "you have to plug that 15-pin cable into your computer" or similar.

Ouch, that doesn't sound like fun. I really must take this chance to share my favorite tech support call at work so far, and it wasn't the user's fault! - the help desk had to move a PC for someone chaging positions - so tech #1 moves it after the user left for the day - after tech #1 returns to the help desk, tech #2 asks him if he logged onto the PC to verify it was working, tech #1 says yes- the user calls tech #2 the next morning because their computer won't boot - after tech#2 asks (three times) if the computer is plugged in, the user finally looks back there and says "hmm, there's no power chord" We got her a power chord but never mentioned it to tech #1

Windows being extremely helpful and resetting the monitor config to 60Hz must have been great for you as well. I really don't understand some people, they don't notice the flickering or something as they're perfectly okay with a 60Hz refresh.

I don't get it, either. 60Hz wasn't so bad on a 14" monitor, but we were selling a lot of 21" monitors, and it was just killing people. Add on to that that Microsoft didn't bother including our monitors in Windows95 when it came out, and that added up to a lot of fun support. Oh, and the Internet wasn't really big yet back then, either, so we couldn't just tell them to download an INF file, we had to send a floppy. Of course, the "engineers" couldn't just create an INF file. They had to write some half-assed application that did some sort of weird shit to do the same thing that Windows95 did via "installing" an INF file. I even reverse engineered an INF file I found somewhere, created one for our monitors, and showed them that it worked better and they didn't care.
I wonder how many people have computer-related eyestrain due to 60Hz refresh rates?

Does anyone have a Dell LCD monitor? When I got mine, I noticed that when I looked at it from the sides, there was a yellow tint on the screen. I figure that is normal and just a limitation of the contrast ratio, but wasn't sure. In the past, i noticed LCDs do "dim" when looking from the sides, but I had never seen a yellowish/gold tint before. Has anyone else seen this on a Dell or other lcd monitors?
