Anyone know how to change MIME allocations in XP? It used to be in Folder Options from Explorer but it's not there any more.

I installed an annoying program that provided browser viewers for every file type you can think of, but it didn't restore the old associations when I uninstalled it. Therefore if I click on, say, a Word file (application/msword) instead of opening Word it does nothing.

Thanks

Rob

Did you try my computer -> tools -> folder options -> file types? Im not sure if you tried it from internet explorer or not. You can also try tools -> folder options from the control panel.

Look in:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content Type\application/msword

It should contain a single string value, called 'Extension', containing '.doc'

Then, go and look in:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.doc

It should have a string value, called 'Content Type', containing 'application/msword'.

The '(Default)' value should contain 'Word.Document.8'

Then, there's a bunch more scary stuff in:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Word.Document.8

The easiest option, however, is probably just to go to Control Panel/Add or Remove Software/Microsoft Office, and try the 'Repair' option.

Whether that actually does any good remains to be seen, however.

M$ Office 'Repair' often requires the install CD, which can be a pain if you haven't got it, FWIW.
