Yes. Buy from a reputable seller.

One useful check is to get a serial number and check with carsupport@sonicblue.com whether it has been reported stolen. This isn't an official service so don't expect a reply within minutes, and of course this is no guarantee that the player is legitimate.

Another way is to use an escrow account. After you have had the opportunity to inspect the merchandise, you can issue a release of funds. Any reputable seller will use escrow as long as the buyer pays the fee for the service.

Or just buy from TTony, if he has any more units in stock. I am still thrilled that I got an unopened player after it being discontinued for 9 months. Sure, it coulda' been stolen and repackaged, but... no, it couldn't have. It's good.

Make a bid for the one I listed a week ago. No-one has put a bid in yet

David, I apologize if this question is out of line, but is there any resource for getting empeg units without all the extras (sled, cables, remote, etc)? TTony's post from a while ago which offered many "bare" empegs really interested me into getting a spare. If I could get a unit-only and save some cash (and not have a sled and remote go to waste sitting in my closet), I'd appreciate it.

What I'm really asking is, does Support have any refurbished-type units that are unsaleable because they don't have all the bundled components? If this is out of line for me to ask, just smack me.

OTOH, there are, I'm sure, some people out there who would like an additional sled and/or remote, so you could buy a whole new unit and sell the sled and remote to make some of your money back.

SB are not selling any units, complete or otherwise. We wouldn't be at all popular if we ran out of service stock!

I can just imagine 50 or 60 empegs sitting in the stock room running in a beowulf cluster....

A support person talking to a scowling managerial type,
"But it's for TESTING!!!!"
