FS: 16GB mkIIa + Tuner + Case + Lenses - 04/06/2003 04:28

Being a poor student (and with the prospect of student loans on the horizon when I go to Uni this October), it's got to the point where I can't afford to both insure my car and keep my Empeg, so I've had to go for a cheaper audio option. So, here's what's for sale:

- Mark 2a Rio Car in original box with all the leads, manuals, software, sled and PSUs (the original US one plus a UK one). It's got the original 10GB drive plus an additional 6GB one.
- Tuner module (from Patrick).
- Two Darkstorm lenses (in addition to the standard blue one): Neon Green and Neon Red.
- A TamTek bag specially designed for pull-out stereos. It took me ages to find this and it's absolutely perfect for people that don't want a hard Pelican case. It's just the right size for the Empeg -- not too big, not too small -- and it's got a side pocket that's great for the remote, USB lead, ethernet lead, etc.

I really would rather sell the whole lot in one go rather than split it up. Please email your offers to greg@nolle.co.uk

Edit: if anyone's checking, the serial number is: 010101788

Thanks a lot,

Greg Nolle

Whats a TamTek bag then?

That's just the name that's on the front of the bag. It was manufactured by a company called Tamrac. I don't think they make this particular bag anymore -- at least, I can't find it on their web site.

If you're interested, the label that came with the bag says this:

In reply to:

  • Carries, stores and protects pull-out car stereos, CBs, mobile phones, etc.
  • Rugged water-resistant Durotec outer material, smooth water-resistant nylon inner lining.
  • Int Dimensions: 7.75" W x 7" H x 2" D
  • Ext. Dimensions: 8.5" W x 8" x 3" D

Constructed of waterproof Durotec and simulated leather trim. Thick foam padding throughout. Lined with smooth, coated backpacking tent nylon.

The bit about it being suitable for mobile phones is because it was first made in 1989 (although it was sealed and unused when I bought it about a year ago) so I guess it was designed to carry brick-type phones as well! It's primary function is for pull-out stereos though.

Hmm...no offers yet. Maybe I should set a price? I'm thinking around £700 at the moment. I'm basing this on the fact that that a 10GB Rio Car just sold for €800 (about £570) and a tuner just sold on eBay for $265 (about £160). Does that seem reasonable?

I dont think the exchange rate between euros and pounds is very good at the moment. I bought an 10 GB riocar from the states (boxed, new) last october, and I think that came to around £380 including shipping from the states...

I'm not in the market for another unit, but to me £700 seems like quite a lot for a 10GB unit, but I guess it all depends on how desperately somebody out there wants an empeg.

(Slight edit: If that £700 includes (which re-reading the message implies that it does) then £700 does sound petty reasonable)....

Anyway, good luck!

Yeah, £700 would be for the whole lot -- empeg, tuner, bag and lenses. And it's a 16GB unit, not 10GB.

Edit: and this is just my idea of what it's worth. That's why I wanted offers because I'm not totally sure how much it is worth.

Still nobody? I suppose I could split the tuner off from the rest of it -- say £500 for the Empeg, bag and lenses, and £200 for the tuner.

If anybody's got a price in mind that's lower than this, please email me anyway. Like I said, to a certain extent I'm just grabbing at straws because I'm not totally sure how much it's all worth.

Greetings!

Typical sale price for a 10-20GB player will range around $600-700. Now that hard drives have come down significantly in price, and increased in storage capacity, you will find that there is less of a premium paid for higher capacity players since the new owner will likely upgrade the player anyway.

An original tuner will occasionally get more than $200 on ebay, but was originally sold for $75. For pricing estimates, you might want to search for "empeg" on ebay, especially the completed items section, to see what they sold for.

Also, there is not really a steady stream of buyers. You will find there are cycles here - typically a bunch of players will surface for sale at one time, and there tends to be a lot of competition for price. The same is true for buyers. Sometimes multiple players will sit on ebay for a few relisting cycles, and then they will all be sold in one cycle. I do not know if that is because of the sale price lowering or because of new interested buyers.

Either way, good luck.

Thanks for the advice, Paul. I guess part of the problem is also due to the weak dollar at the moment ($1.66 to the £).

In which case, how about I say this:

Empeg, bag, lenses - $700/£420/€595
Tuner - $250/£150/€215

An original tuner ... was originally sold for $75.
I'm pretty sure it was originally just under $100, Paul. That's how much I remember paying.

Greetings!

It could be, especially with tax and shipping. I think it listed for around $79 and change, but by the time the extras were added in... That might have also been during the firesale, when I bought my current players and tuners.

Still, it was significantly less expensive than the $200 you see them selling for on ebay...
