eBay... stolen?

eBay... stolen? - 09/01/2004 14:08

OK, so I decided I should get a mk2...
Found a cheap one on eBay, problem is the seller is a new eBay user, has zero feedback, and it smells stolen (no dock)... No information on unit serial, drive size, etc, but I have mailed the seller asking for that information.

Presuming he tells me the serial, where can I find a registry of known stolen units?

eBay page here

Once you get the serial number, contact Rob Voisey ("Rob") via a private message on this BBS.

I would also be very leery of buying a sled-less unit, regardless of whether it was stolen or not. Without the sled, it's not very useful. And it's very hard to get replacement sleds.

The photos show a box, so the chances are it wasn't stolen.

Have you asked about the sled? It could just be that his car was stolen. Thats happened before.

Not a very clear picture of the whole outside of the box, though...

If so, the person in question might have been asking for a sled here on this very BBS, so look around and see if you can match up anything.

Thanks a bunch

Well... Worst case scenario and it's totally impossible to source a sled from somewhere, I should be able to hack one together myself. Considering what I'm planning to do to my dash (won't tell other than it incorporates 3-4 1din units, screen, heater controls and lots of motorization), making a sled from scratch should be a piece of cake.

They could be lifted from somewhere else...

Been there, done that, no dice.

The difficult part isn't the sled, it's the docking connector and pins, which are hard to source. You might also get lucky and be able to buy one from Rob S. when he's able to re-open the support queue. Not sure about that.

I had no problems getting my docking connector and pins from Digi-Key. I got the information from this post. Maybe that information could go into the FAQ?

I gather that you are the winning bidder - The name "Japaneren" looks suspiciously Danish to me :-)

If it were you, and the unit is not stolen - congratulations on your purchase, not many Danish Empeg owners around.

Re: eBay... stolen? - 10/01/2004 21:34

Yup, I am. No, it doesn't sound danish, it sounds japanese ;-)

Thanks. I expect I was the second dane with an Empeg, and I hope I'll be the first with 2 ;-) Now I just need a 3rd to complete my collection ;-)

You're only the second danish owner that I know of - not counting the 4 on the registry.

On another subject, the guy actually emailed me today telling me he'd ship the unit ASAP after recieving the money - totally ignoring my earlier request for information... Oh well... maybe the mail through eBay somehow got lost in a spam filter or something...
At least his mail got caught in *my* spam filter:

Sorry, beat you to it. I'm the proud owner of two Empegs, both MK2 units.

A couple years back, someone from Jutland in the Aarhus area was active here. Don't know what happend to him though, perhaps he lost interest, or perhaps he is just enjoying his Empeg without feeling the need to participate here.

Best of luck. Let us know when you receive your sound machine.

Re: eBay... stolen? - 12/01/2004 08:04

The auction was just about over when that guy posted.
The guy I'm buying from apparently lost it while moving.

BTW, it's a Blue (just what I wanted), 12GB with the serial #010101240...
Would that be unit #101240 or unit #1240?
mk2 or mk2a?

Just waiting for rob now..... *impatient as hell*

Re: eBay... stolen? - 12/01/2004 08:58

Only about 4000 were made, so it can't be 101240. I think its a Mk2 - with 2x6GB drives?

Don't think they made Mk2a's in 12GB. I could be very very very wrong though!

Re: eBay... stolen? - 12/01/2004 09:00

If I remember correctly, the first four digits were month / year of production, the last four digits were the unit count. So I would say unit #1240 manufactured January 2001.

Edit: Oh, looking at the photos in that auction, it is likely a Mark2A. The manual and box are the earlier empeg style, with the label branding it as Rio. But the cover plate of the player is Rio (no label) - that would be a Mark2A unless the cover plate was switched.

Right... should have caught that.
Good thing too... Possibility of Japanese support... *drool*.

Guess I should get my desktop box to understand it as well......

Nope. There's not enough digits in that serial number. There's no such thing as a month number of zero, so it can't be the leading-zeroes problem.

Be very suspicious of that player. If you actually won the auction, check the serial number in the firmware's "about" menu when you get it.

Edit: Oh wait. The serial wasn't 101240, it was 10101240. I was looking at the reply, not the original message.
