CompUSA has a 40gb disk in a USB 2.0 enclosure. They also have a firewire version but that was sold out locally. Both local stores had 8 of these yesterday; A friend and I each bought one at one store.

What size? 3.5 or 2.5? Is it self-powered or is there an external power supply?

Doesn't really matter if it's sold out

But I'd imagine it would be a 3.5"

I actually picked one up yesterday. It was at one of the CompUSA stored that dbrashear reported to have 8 each. Well I had a hard time finding it, because they almost hid the whole stack of 7 of 'em in a corner.

They are larger and heavier than I expected. Not really ultraportable. Internal powersupply. It looks like it is probably a generic enclosure that can fit pretty much any 3.5 or 5.25 size IDE drive. There is a 3.5" 40GB Samsung drive in it.

I grabbed the cheapest USB2.0 cardbus card I could find while I was at it. Compusa branded, but it uses the bog standard NEC chipset. Both the pccard and the drive worked with linux, some problems with the latest dev kernels, but I managed to copy a bunch of files back and forth.

self-powered (plug in standard pc power cable) not usb-powered. 3.5" drive.

Wilkins? Yeah, I looked and looked and then heard a sales associate plugging them to someone, looked where he was standing, and lo....

Mine's actually at CMU now sucking down something like 30*450mb from Sweden. I figure it should be done right around when the guy who's sharing the files with me shows up at my house, a week from today
