Where To Buy DVD-r/ DVD-RW media...Cheap? - 14/10/2003 06:05

I do not use DVD-r or DVD-RW very often. I need to do some archiving and I do not want to buy 25, 50, or 100 in one clip. I am looking for a quantity like 5-10. Where can I pick up media in these quantities for a decent price. I checked out a couple of E-stores and I really don't buy them enough to know if I am getting a good deal.

www.supermediastore.com is my choice but I buy spindles. If you are going to buy name brand media in jewel packs you might do just as well buying locally.

Edit: I take that back. You can get 4x media in jewel cases for $1.28 each. That's much better then you'll find locally.

I am not sure of the quality of these discs, but I bought a box to check out with my DVR-A04. They should be here soon.

i buy the princos from http://qtccdr.com/
not sure how good they actually are, but they work great for backing up my xbox games, which is all i burn to dvd. except for using my -rw disc for transferring large demos and mods back and forth from a friends machine. its a shame that its faster to burn a full dvd, walk over to his place and copy it to his hdd quicker than i can transfer the same thing over our wireless connection. i should really start looking at moving from b to g.

Which brings me to another good question, what do you guys consider the best quality inexpensive media?

I got a spindle of 100 dvd-r's at www.yesbuy.net for around 95 bucks.... they seemed to be ok until I actually watched a film that took the entire disc... towards the end the video gets choppy and just dies close to 10 minutes toward the end. I'm fairly certain this behavior is because the media is crap, it happens to me fairly consistantly when making legal backup copys of movies that take the entire disk...

A friend of mine swears by www.meritline.com, I personally haven't used them yet. Just checked them, a 50 pack of Ritek printables for 57 bucks and a 100 pack of Ritek Grade A dvd-r for 89 bucks with free shipping.... I didn't check any of the other sites but that seems pretty good...

I still remember my first Data Processing textbook that had an excercise to calculate when to send data by modem, when to use a motorcycle courier

Being DVD-R media is somewhat expensive and not many people have the hardware to use it, I have only used two different brands thus far. The first was some generic stuff that sucked. Data was fine, but on many DVD players the disc wouldn't playback properly for some reason. It would get all jumpy.

Then I bought some Verbatim DVD-Rs from Office Max. These things kick ass. Absolutely no problems. Of course, the Verbatims are not cheap.

I will keep this thread updated with the status of the Xtreme brand. That seems like the deal to beat.

Just an update for those on the fence about buying cheap DVD-Rs.

I have received these discs and they are good. Plain smooth silver top. They burn great at 4x on my new DVR-106 (about 15 minutes for a full disc). The bottom is light purple (not as dark as most others I have used). I will likely buy more.
