whats in a name - 22/10/2003 08:32

im often asked about my name
understandably
here, i will tell all(some)

back in the day i was on irc alot and i had the name bluebell, because it was the first thing i thought of when i jumped online. for no huge reason i changed it to bluesex, prolly cause i kept getting called blueballs
sometimes i had lots of sessions online. my dreamcast, my computer, my moms computer, my friends computer when i got online from one of them i would change my name according to what i was on
i was bluesex on my computer, orangesex on my dreamcast, greensex on my friends and purplesex on my moms
i talked to this dude named joe alot
maybe it was josh, irrelevant
mention came up about my being a virgin. a colorblind virgin, at that
he laughed his ass off
'your names some color and sex, two things which you know nothing about!'
he said i was very flexible
customizable, even
hence, customsex

Hahah... nice.

My usual online name is skivvie. It came from this guy i took a spring break trip my Junior year in high school with to Tampa, Florida to go to the skate park of Tampa. He was a sort of thuggish older guy who came along with me and my friends at the last minute and had the most "original" way of speaking i'd ever heard. One of his catch phrases was "damn skippy" instead of a simple yes. Somehow over the course of that trip it became "damn skivvie i'm wit it". My friend James picks up on other peoples speach patterns very easily, and by the end of the week was saying "damn skivvie" every 5 minutes. I of course had to mock the hell out of him for stealing someone elses saying, and over the next few months it somehow got flipped around on me, and bam, i was "skivvie".

But i like your story better. =]

Mine is short for “Hyper Kinetic Ferret Boy on a Double Espresso”, a fraternity “nickname” I was given in college (some people get the impression that I’m excitable and hyper). I don’t really like the name, but I can never think of anything better!

Re: whats in a name - 22/10/2003 09:51

Worked on an old knackered ship where due to it being a bit fooked there was two fourth engineers

the chief was a bit old and not very good names so therefore the two fourth engineers became known to him as the fat fourth and the thinfourth

Thinfourth2 well lost the password and e-mail account of thnfourth account

Re: whats in a name - 22/10/2003 09:56

whats a fourth engineer, and how do you have two?
knackered mean messed up. trashed, broken?
fooked mean fscked?

yeah, with my name i always have to let people know, when they ask, that the story is not nearly as interesting as what they had probably come up with on their own.

Re: whats in a name - 22/10/2003 10:05

engineers go down in rank from chief, second, third, fourth and then junior or fifth

Knackered is broken and fooked is fscked

Re: whats in a name - 22/10/2003 10:12

rather boringly, mine is just a mash together of my last name. Its also my domain name.
My usual handle is Braindead, from my MP Doom and TeamFortress days. Most folks gave me leeway for doing dumb stuff then.
I didn't really want to register braindead.com as well.

Re: whats in a name - 22/10/2003 10:44

Mine's boring as well. The number was random, but the name is from Owen Wilson's character in "Bottle Rocket." I recommend it to anyone, as his character in that movie is just amazing. (on an unrelated note, I also recommend "Minus Man" with Owen Wilson. Very good if you like quiet, quirky movies about serial killers )

Re: whats in a name - 22/10/2003 10:46

I've mentioned before that mine is from ricin, or ricinus communis, the poison. Not all that exciting. I did start using it in IRC though quite a while back. It all started in the BBS days where my nick was Fulcrum, named after the Mig-29. I had picked that because my best friend at the time was Falcon (named after the F-16), and therefore it just made sense to pick the rival plane. Plus, I liked that it had a double meaning, namely "An agent through which vital powers are exercised," among others. Anyway, then once I got into IRC I bounced around a lot and couldn't stick with one name. I used Rage, cuisinart (yeah, don't ask ), and others I can't remember. Then after reading a plethora of text online and seeing a Discovery Channel show all about the poison, I decided to stick with RiCiN, and have ever since (about 12 years).

Anyway, not as interesting of a story as everyone else, but that's my story.

I love Bottle Rocket. The funniest is the part where they come in during the safe crack and the Indian guy is just sitting in a chair... Forgot the details or his name, but I laughed my ass off.

Mine's my IT logon name at work. Sadly nothing more interesting than that. I'd have probably chosen Andy, but that was already taken. I hate having to remember hundreds of user names, passwords, pin numbers, etc....

Re: whats in a name - 22/10/2003 11:38

In a recent security audit at work, we were dinged for using our official email address to ask questions on the internet.
Apparently, naughty people will use the information and userids to assist them in assaulting your defenses, so maybe using an internal name outside is not such a good idea.
This is assuming that this board is inhabited with the afformentioned naughty people

Hehe, yeah I love that part. I believe his name is Kumar (don't know how it's spelled).

"What are you doing in the freezer??"

Re: whats in a name - 22/10/2003 12:27

but the name is from Owen Wilson's character in "Bottle Rocket."
What a coincidence. I just borrowed that DVD from Tod to watch it.

Re: whats in a name - 22/10/2003 12:30

Yep. IMDB tells me that his name is actually "Kumar Pallana" - it's the guy that Wes Anderson keeps using in Rushmore (Mr. LittleJeans) & The Royal Tenenbaums (Pagoda).

Looks like Wes is gonna use him again in the upcoming The Life Aquatic (along with a lot of his favorite other cast members) - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0362270/

IMDB says that Kumar was the "Former proprietor of the Cosmic Cup coffee shop on Oak Lawn Avenue in Dallas where director Wes Anderson used to hang out."

Haha!

Yup, that's the guy. I'm glad I even spelled the name right.

Hope you like it Tony. I watch it about every couple months

Re: whats in a name - 22/10/2003 14:08

My name here is rather boring. Long before irc and before the internet was widely known in southern california (at that time I had the qrm.com address, sure wish I kept it), I was on a DLX bbs that assigned me the username larry818, so I kept it ever since. Some folks think it's the areacode I live in, as 818 is close to me.

In other places I'm TheArrogantOracle, my nickname amongst my computer savvy friends... Since I'm not an Empeg oracle, I didn't use it here.

Re: whats in a name - 22/10/2003 14:14

My first computer account, per se, was at NCSU my junior year of high school. They assigned me wbfaulk. I used that for a while, then, eventually, I got a job where they gave me wfaulk, and I've stuck with that. Which confuses people, since there's no apparent `W' in ``Bitt''. Some folks call me ``Bill'' anyway.

I suppose I should graduate myself to ``wbf''.

My nick is from an old Yahoo profile I created years ago when I was testing the Internet waters for the first time...Cheers to who can tell me what it refers to

Re: whats in a name - 22/10/2003 16:57

Ah well, mine was from my first login too - my first real tech job (working for my brother, but that's another story ). The boss's name was Paul W*mumble* (can't remember) and he'd obviously taken the paulw login - so I just extended it out a little. I've been PaulWay on the internet ever since. AFAICS there's only one PaulWay, too...

And my picture? Yes, it's of me. A long while ago, when I didn't have a beard.

Have fun,

Paul

Mine's my real name -- I'm named after a good friend of my Dad's -- they went to naval college (Merchant rather than Royal) together, and studied for their second mate's exams at the same time.

On other boards, I've started to go by the handle "guy-in-corner". Anyone who's looked at the writing on a mk2 empeg board (or was it the 2a?) will know why.

Back in my Quaking days, it was "[CC] Rodge". The CC stands for "Clan Circus", because none of us were taking it seriously.

Re: whats in a name - 23/10/2003 03:03

In reply to:

so maybe using an internal name outside is not such a good idea.

I'm not particularly worried about that, firstly someone would have to gain physical access to a workstation, they would have to guess my password, my PIN and also have access to my conditional access fob. Oh yes, they'd also have to guess which domain I belong to as well. As for my email address shown in my profile, it's my home one. I wouldn't dream of putting my beeb one in!

Plus, I'm not re-registering myself now, I'm well on the way to a 1000 posts!

Re: whats in a name - 23/10/2003 03:34

My first handle ever was MTG on early arcade-games like Defender or Scramble. It was built of the initials of the girl i loved then, MT, and my own ones, TG. Most games allowed only 3 characters, so i merged them together.
Then in the BBS-years some friends gave me the name "helldriver", cause i was one of the guys driving too fast everytime i was on the road. This ended up in wrecking first my Mom's car, later my own one.
When signing in on my friens first BBS (on Amiga), i didn't like helldriver for its bad sounding touch. So i called myself Speedy.
Later on the internet i found out, that Speedy is used very often, so i added my year of birth to it. That's it 'til now.
For serious conversation i have the email thgabel, which is put together from my real name.

cheers, Thomas

BTW: I never got MT as my girlfriend, she was so beautiful, hundreds of guys were running after her...
But i loved her out of the distance.

Always wondered what your id meant. Makes sense now.

'Rearviewmirror' (by Pearl Jam) was a song I used to listen to a lot, around the time I heard about this board and decided to join.

Re: whats in a name - 23/10/2003 10:16

And what's it say about me that I had actually figured out that you were "guy-in-corner" without the benefit of having ever owned or seen a board from an empeg?

Obviously, mine is my initials, pronounced "DULF" ever since I made the mistake of having it engraved in my college ring (in case it was ever lost). Guess what? It's lost.

Mines from a somewhat comedic serial I wrote on a forum in college. Meatballman was a fictional superhero that saved the world from the evil vegetarians. It just kinda stuck.

Re: whats in a name - 24/10/2003 00:10

Mine's another mostly boring one. It's... uh... pretty much what it says.

My 3 letter video game entry was RAF. Not that I ever got to use it much.

Re: whats in a name - 24/10/2003 02:54

Well one of my nicknames given to me by the girls I went out with at my school was frog (something to do with things I did with my tongue, apparently) so I have a big collection of frog items and my second tattoo is of a large green tree frog. The 51 bit comes from enjoying all the stories about Area51 when I was growing up, so when I set up my first website many years ago I thought I'd create a section with faked UFO pictures (I had just discovered photoshop) and Frog51 just made sense.

When I first started with HiFi I thought I wanted a top end audiophile Pink Triangle turntable - a "Little Pink Thing":

I eventually got a Little Blue Thing - which is what my Rio is called

Paul W is my name too. yz33d was random keystrokes, and it was reversed to d33zy after I was banned for unmentionable acts.
