Looking for an old screen saver...

Looking for an old screen saver... - 28/01/2004 13:48

Back in the old Windows 3.1 days, there was the "After Dark" series of screen savers. One of them contained a module that used a tiling algorithm to slowly draw embossed tiles on the screen in interesting patterns. I've drawn a quick little picture in PaintShop of what I remember it looked like:

What I'd like to know is, does anyone (a) remember the name of that module in After Dark so I can google it and see if anyone's made a 32-bit version of it, or (b) happen to know of a 32-bit version?

I loved that one, it was called Penrose. Unsure if you can find for windows, though I did a quck google and found one for Linux.

Ah, yes! That was the name! Thanks!

Heh, first link refers to a version by Jamie Zawinski.

Edit: if you follow the link, it's acutally just a link to someone else's penrose implementation linked at Jamie's site...

Actually, jwz wrote a screensaver engine into which actual screensavers can be plugged. He wrote the part that detects idle time, locks the screen, loads the screensavers, etc.

You'll also note that he has a disclaimer on his site:
There is no Windows version of xscreensaver, and there never will be. Please stop asking. That goes double for the ``xmatrix'' mode. No. The answer is no. I don't use any Microsoft products and neither should you.

Well, he would say that, wouldn't he?

I was unable to find a penrose tiling implementation for Windows in my google searches. Perhaps I just need to find some open source Penrose code and make one myself...

Hmph. Having trouble even locating code examples for generating penrose tiles.

You could get the source code to xscreensaver. The hacks are usually pretty straightforwardly coded.
