It's a bit from Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. The passage is here

Douglas Adams, HitchHikers Guide to the Galaxy (or one of the other 4 books in the trilogy Don't quite recall which book it is...).

In one scene, a whale and a petunia suddenly materializes a fair bit above the surface of a planet. The whales continued life beyond that point is rather short, and its thoughts trying to figure out the situation are described in detail.
