Preventing lettering from rubbing off

I recently replaced the window switch in my pontiac sunfire. However, the little window symbol in the old one had, for the poster, rubbed off. Is there anything I can put over it to prevent it from happening again on the "new" one? (it came from a junk yard, but it looks pretty new on the surface.)

You could apply a clearcoat over it. There are _many_ possibilities here - a craft-store paint sealer, some household varnishes, car bodywork clearcoat (common on e.g. modern VWs), epoxy or polyester resin etc. The list of potential clearcoats is long.

All of these will have the side effect of adding a visible gloss to the finish. This may not matter depending on the original button finish and location. You might want to test on the old one.
