X Box ? - 30/10/2004 14:38

Worth me getting? Been thinking for a wee while now about getting one but what can I do with it other than games?

Can I store and play DivX, mpegs etc on it?

Can I play 'backed up' games on it and also online with my broadband connection? And yes, I do mean legal backed-up games

Can I upgrade the memory and hard disk?

What other cool stuff can I do?

Yes, you can play and store divx movies on a modded xbox.

You can play game backups, but not online - xbox live will permanantly ban you if you play online with an mod chip.

Once modded you can upgrade the harddisc. You can upgrade the memory on hardwarea versions prior to 1.6 by soldering memory chips onto the motherboard. Linux (afaik) & the dev kit make use of the extra memory.

There's also an easy way to do it for the PS2. I do think you're limited on the number of games you can play online, but there's a FAQ entry on that.

Of course, this is assuming PS2 or XBox aren't crap compared to the awesome gaming experience of the Gamecube

The fact that Halo 2 is coming out as xbox-only really has me itching to snag one.

Just don't pronounce it "Ten Box" unless you enjoy baiting Macintosh owners.

What? It's not coming out for the PC at all? I thought Halo 1 was XBox only and then they announced a PC port.

Some modchips have a switch so you can select to boot from the normal bios or the modchip. AFAIK with that, and a lockable/locked harddrive you're OK for Live - for now...

for now, although recent announcements from MS are pointing toward that changing.

Yeah, like a year later or something. Me, I like instant gratification.

Of course, playing first person shooters with a joystick gives me a headache, so I should probably hold off anyway.

Some company has made a little dongle that lets you plug a keyboard and mouse into the XBox. I've no idea how compat it is with games. I'll have to look for the link again...

Re: X Box ? - 31/10/2004 02:05

I know, I saw the kb/mouse adapter. But the mouse only emulates a joystick, and the games were only programmed to be played with a joystick. In other words, you're still playing a game that feels like a joystick, and adding an extra layer of device translation between you and the game. No thanks. I'll wait and see if they port it to the PC.

no, he is speaking of the SmartJoy Frag
watch the videos at the bottom for a good showing of what it is.

he mentions presets, but the keys are totally configurable. i am surprised that he has never played Halo, which is obvious from his lack of knowledge of the very first level.

The controller ports on the front are really just USB ports. I've got one of those adaptor cables and have used my home made arcade controller and mame on the xbox.
