How to get email out of Hotmail? - 31/01/2005 02:59

Kelly (my sig.o) just picked up an iBook today (after I got sick of her crashing PCs). I'm not trying to get her off of hotmail and figured a hack to get the contacts out, but I have no idea how to get her emails. I know Hotmail no longer allows webDAV or POP. Is there any way to get her email off of their server without having to pay for the monthly service?

Any and all advice appreciated...

Mac OS X hints has two suggestions. I personally run the hotwayd solution on my Linux server as an option for my mail users. They can plug in some info, and have fetchmail grab their hotmail and have it waiting in a folder on their IMAP account.

Yeah... i'd read that hint but dismissed it since reading that Hotmail had closed down all external access to Hotmail. Maybe i'm not understanding how they work... I'm gonna try it. Thanks for the link Tom.

Hotwayd at least uses a protocal MS developed to allow Outlook Express to access Hotmail. So it sits in a good position, as anything they do to break the protocal will break Outlook Express. The other solution they link to is probably similar.

Yeap, as I'd read, Hotmail has shut out the ability of Outlook and Outlook Express to access Hotmail unless you are a paying customer. So beyond spending the cash or a bunch of forwarding... screwed.

Weird, Hotwayd is still working just fine, I tested it now by sending a message to my hotmail account, and watching it pulled right back down via fetchmail asking hotwayd for messages.

Here's an article on it:

Looks like if you've used it before, you can continue until March or April, when they'll pull the plug unless you pay.
