PC desktop drive problem?!? - 22/09/2005 10:32

Anyone have any good ideas?

When ever I try to access anything on the E drive (guess where most of my music and movies are?) it starts using 100% of the memory, everything slows to a dead crawl and even stops…I have ran all my defrags, my virus scanners, and my adware/spyware detectors/cleaners…I need to find a tool to see if I can find out what the problem is, and if I can, fix it….If I have to reformat the 250, I’m hosed…again!

Any recommendataions?

Is DMA enabled for that drive in Device Manager? Check the properties for your IDE controller to determine that.

I'll check when I get home and see...should it be? Every thing has been running fine since like May. The only difference with my hardware is that I added a UPS to my system. And it ran fine for a week. Then I started having the 'issues'. I can get to the E drive , (the partitioned 250 gigger is drive D and E) but when I try to open a folder on it or access anything on the drve it hangs, uses 100% of the memory, and IF it comes back it gives the infamous 'not responding' error...however the other half of the drive (the D partition) works just fine...
I'm really tweaked out over this...can't afford to replace a 250, much less loosing the data...

Yeah, it should be enabled. See this post for details.

Ok, the DMA is set correctly. I have checked the drive 9ways to hell and back, and it is good. I have a file or file structure problem. Eve File Scavenger pukes when trying to read the entire drive in 'exhaustive' mode.

Does anyone have a recommendation of ANY tools, that I could use to try to repair the file structure on that partition?
Many many thanks....

How full is the partition?
I had similar problems with an 80GB drive that was close to maxxed out (single partition, non-boot drive, WinME).
I thought the drive was about to croak so I carefully unloaded it.
Lo and behold my problems vanished- it just didn't like being full.
Could that be true for a full partition?

I'd copy as much data off of it as possible ASAP, whatever the case.

The partition has 23 GIG out of 117 GIG available...I wouldn't think size would be a problem. But anyway, I am copying the music and document files now (some I can't get to still) then I will try a couple of the lameass tools that I know of...I have access to bunches but have no idea which one to try...

Fixed...thank goodness! It looks like I even kept most of my files....if anyone has this problem in the future...maybe I can help. Thanks for all the assistance!

Just let me say...you need to run chkdsk with the CORRECT parameters....took about two and a hlf hours but it seems to be much better now...
