It's a 2nd-hand account posted in the comments section, but this is apparently the story:

This jump was filmed at Copper Mountain in Colorado. My friend was working the night it happend. Apparently this guy was getting wasted at Jacks, the bar at the mountain, when he bet this guy (who had a camera) that he could jump the entire escalator. My friend said that when he went into the bathroom to check on him there was blood onevery wall. I dont blame the guy, I would do the same if I had to listen to the live entertainment at Jacks for any length of time.

May I request that people in this thread link it as a description instead of just a random video number? Use the {URL=} {/URL} tags for it.

For example:

Trashed Toyota Pickup, Top Gear segment

instead of:

That way, I can decide whether or not I've already seen it before without clicking on the link.

AC-130 Targeting Video. From other sources (don't remember where I read it), this is a night attack in Afghanistan.

In this targeting video the AC-130 crew observes people planting what they believe is a road-side bomb in Iraq. Also seems to be at night using IR imaging.

The moral of the story seems to be that you should not move after you somehow manage to narrowly avoid being blown to bits.

Those two links are the same event. One mentions the AC-130 as a helicopter... perhaps this is from Apache instead?

Bad clicking on my part. Sorry.

I just saw some AH-64 (Apache) footage and it's quite different. Both of your links are likely AC-130s. Having that many crew involved on the radio is good indicator too. I was just amazed at how steady the camera is for a plane flying in a circle. However one link obviously shows a clrcling motion, the other does not.

[a UK-based BitTorrent site] will definately have each episode, however to sign up you need to wait until they purge the membership database - basically reload the signup screen every few minutes until it appears. Also normal members (with a low share ratio) need to wait 24hrs before they can download new releases.

I'm not sure if I beleive this, but it's the best explation I've found.

My son sent me this link tonight that will appeal to the Rube Goldbergs among us. I wish I knew more details about it, it looks like the result of a Japanese (?) contest, and some of these folks are astonishingly creative, particularly the one where the marble plays the melody on the water glasses.

There are so many common elements in the constructions that perhaps there was some sort of "kit" and rules to follow?

I can only imagine the number of hours (Tens? Hundreds?) that went into some of these.

See for yourself...

Oh, and look! There's a sequel!

Montage of several angles of yesterday's nuclear power plant demolition.
http://hansv.com/trojan_implosion/

The plant is^h^h was a fairly large and visible landmark, on the Columbia river that marks the border between Oregon and Washington. You can see it clearly from interstate 5, the main arterial that runs down the West coast.

I happened to be driving up from Portland shortly after the demolition. The dust was still in the air. All the trees surrounding the area were tan colored, from the dust. I knew there was going to be a demolition of the plant, but thought it was going to be today rather than yesterday. Too bad I didn't know more details, otherwise I would have been able to leave on time to watch the implosion as it happened.

I'm going to miss that landmark. When driving to Portland, it was always my cue that I was nearing my destination. Now you can only see the containment dome, and you have to look a bit more closely to see that.

Well, maybe the other side of the coin is that perhaps someone doesn't want to install QuickTime because it puts iTunes on their computer too, and it's too big of a download or it takes too much disk space, but they've already got flash.

I think the way it's bundled with iTunes by default is a bit dreadful, but they've at least given us a work-around for that (even if the link is a bit hard to find).

But what's dreadful about QuickTime itself? Seems to work pretty well for me.

Just the way it gets its claws into everything (it started up just now when I clicked on a link to an MP3 in Firefox -- why? I've got MP3 turned off in its control panel thing). The way it checks for updates by default. The way it gives itself a system tray icon by default. Basically, the way you can't just download the codecs and have done with it, without Apple making a power grab for your whole multimedia experience.

Re: Best videos. - 09/06/2006 11:55

That's just Apple following the Windows developer creedo. That's the way I've seen every Windows application install itself and behave - at least since I started using Windows in 1995. I'm not saying it's a requirement of writing and distributing Windows software, nor that it's not sloppy and gives a poor user experience, but it's par for the course.

At least you know it's downloading and installing at all. Unlike 30% of the software found on your typical Windows internet user's computer (software they don't know about).

Exactly my experience. I have no problem with the program assigning its self as the default player, but I didn't ask for Firefox integration, and there seems to be no way to turn it off (although this might be a bit of a Firefox issue as well). And no, I specifically told it when it installed that I did not want it touching my MP3s. Yet there it goes, playing the file when I click on a link.

I could live without the codec purely because it's proprietary, although I just use VLC anyway. They only reason I have Quicktime installed on my PC is for embedded video, which I also strongly dislike.

I don't know what software you're using, but I've only seen a few applications behave like Quicktime does when you install it, and those applications get uninstalled as quickly as possible and then I go look for alternatives.

Most Windows software does not automatically install a system tray icon. Most software does not give you the choice of whether you want it to do something, and then completely disregard your choice (I unchecked MP3s, it plays MP3s in my web browser anyway - that seriously pisses me off).

Re: Best videos. - 10/06/2006 01:09

At one point I used to swear everything I was instaling put some icon in the tray or took over extensions without asking. Even the ATI driver install puts a useless icon in the tray. Java seems to pop one in there at random times, McAfee virus scan is a virus unto itself. And those are very "prominent" installs. I stopped using Windows as a primary/desktop/working OS well over a year ago, so I can't rattle everything off the top of my head.

The most annoying for me however were Windows own tray icons. I still don't know how to get rid of the red sheild that appears when you turn off automatic updates.

MPlayer was my video player of choice for Windows. Windows media player is generally a featureless pain in the butt (it was nowhere near as good as QuickTime Player 6 - except QT wouldn't play all the DivX, xvid and other variants).

Re: Best videos. - 10/06/2006 12:21

The ATI Windows software has always been sub-par and I see no reason it's going to get much better any time soon. Most of the Windows software engineers at the company are quite a ways removed from "getting it."

Since I was doing some software design for the Mac team while there, I also contributed some usability testing for Catalyst Control Center. It was pretty much a failure in every regard. CCC was also the Windows answer to the long-standing ATI Displays for Mac OS which generated some pretty serious waves in the PC teams when it shipped with a nice little suite of 3D Overrides and support for Super-Sampling Anti-Aliasing (which the PC driver team had told their superiors wasn't possible). Nothing like a single team of 20 (and that included testers) constantly outshining multiple teams with a developer count of over 200.

Almost every one of those cars had rigged explosives. You can even see the explosives detonate before impact on the one where the cars are stacked up like dominoes.

And yeah, the rpg looked like a computer animation. And he would have to be a real lucky shot to hit the target, expecially with the machine gun, since he wasn't even aiming. Not to mention that machine guns and rpg's are illegal in Britain...

It's not. But Youtube is apparently only at fault if they get a complaint from the content owner and do not take it down. That's apparently all the DMCA requires. I don't know how it works for content owned by companies outside the US, though. That would be an interesting question.

And I found the sketch suprisingly unfunny. Maybe it's the language barrier

Possibly, I'm not sure. I sure as hell don't have a problem with it!

Have you got much Shooting Stars stuff? I'd love to get a clip of the 'boy band' they created in one episode. All I remember about it was Will Self/Johnny Vegas era and featured Vic with a donut-style afro haircut.

As for not getting it issue. I doubt it's a language barrier thing, I'm sure there are plenty of people in the UK who don't find it funny. It's the surreal aspect of their humour that I find so funny.

Re: Best videos. - 02/08/2006 11:20

This might be the wrong place, but I have a streaming video question.

On my machine, every type of streaming video gives me the same problem. It'll play for about 30 seconds, the video will freeze for about 2-3 seconds (while the audio continues uninterrupted), and then it'll get back to normal. The whole video will play, but it's freezing up every 20-30 seconds which is annoying to say the least. Generally I can go back to the parts I missed and it won't freeze in the same place, so I can see what I missed before.

The other thing that annoys me is that this only happens in Firefox, not IE. It happens on all types of streaming media. QT, WMV, Flash, etc.

Any ideas?
Posted by: tfabris

Re: Best videos. - 02/08/2006 14:30

I don't have a solution for you, but as a data point: I use Firefox and don't have that particular problem.

Have you checked to make sure Firefoz, and more importantly, your player applications are updated to their latest versions? I know that a certain version of Quicktime player (a few point releases ago) had an incompatibility with Firefox that would tend to lock up and/or crash Firefox occasionally.

World's fastest bicycle? No, it isn't.

In 1985, John Howard set the world's bicycle land speed record of 152.2 MPH (245 km/h) and he didn't use any rocket engines, either -- he pedaled the damn thing! A far more impressive achievement than strapping a rocket onto a bicycle and holding on for dear life!

Impressive! Thanks for that.

Downhill near my home I managed about 38.7 MPH which is my fastest ever. Set off the speed camera That is the fastest I've been and not far from my terminal velocity at a guess, the aerodynamics were hard to push against at that speed. I'd expect to go faster than about 45-50 MPH you really need to be behind a train or something - I like the guys rig with the 500hp car + fairing in front.

Nah... it depends on the bike you have, the hill you're on, and how good a rider you are -- I hit 37MPH last night on a moderate downhill and still had some gears left. I've gone plenty faster (just barely over 50MPH) on longer downhills where I was actually trying to go fast; at the point of spinning my pedals as fast as I can with no affect on speed (I need to go out to the mountains for a proper effort... ). But that's on my road bike. My mountain bike has never achieved such speeds. (Some of the Tour de France guys have gone over 75mph on downhill sections.)

At any rate, I was under the impression that the cycling land speeds were set by towing the cyclist up to a certain speed, first, and then the cyclist pedaling up to full speed.

Re: Best videos. - 03/08/2006 17:25

Re: Best videos. - 08/08/2006 19:13

gbeer's, even.

And, to add additional information, basically what happens is that you create a key where all of the points are drilled to their lowest settings, while leaving the humps between them. Push the key in until it's one before the last position. (You know how when you put a key in a lock, it has a few disinct places where it's wants to rest? The last one of those before it's fully inserted.) Then bump the key fully in while turning the key. It seems from some of the clips that you can bump it in the right direction so that the bump itself turns the key.

What happens is that the humps between the key's positions push the pins up very quickly, and that causes the driver pins to fly up away from the key pins. This creates a large gap between them, which means that there is a significant period of time in which the cylinder can be turned. The diagrams on the Wikipedia entry for pin tumbler locks should help illustrate what I just said.

From the comments on digg, several people spotted Canadian street signs in the video.

Any true hick in the US would be driving an American truck, and the video had them in a Toyota truck. I was reminded of that fact when I moved to Texas.

I'm wondering if this guy is actually experiencing anything out of the ordinary, or if he's just acting for the camera (sorry, he seems the type).

Besides, if he had watched the Mythbusters, he would have learned that all he needed to do was swallow a couple of them whole, then drink the diet coke. I think chewing them would lessen the reaction.

On Mythbusters Jamie didn't swallow the Mentos, he just put them in his mouth. If the guy on YouTube swallowed some of the chewed Mentos and then managed to swallow some Coke then he might well have been suffering some discomfort.

He was probably just acting up though...

Naw, just get Medeco brand locks.

I just bought some "bump keys" on eBay and will see if they work. I'm going to use them to convince family to get some Medeco locks. It appears that Medeco locks aren't special at all - it's the keys that are. Only authorized dealers can order the blanks or copy them. I wonder how long before a knock-off blank appears?

They didn't work because of their waxy coating, by chewing them he would have broken up the coating.

Re: Best videos. - 22/08/2006 15:46

It's pretty easy to get your hands on a Medeco key. You don't need a blank, just any key, including one of the dozens of duplicates most building managers have. You'd just have to drill down further.

That said, I believe that Medeco locks are different in that two mechanisms have to be unlocked at the same time, namely the key has to be fully inserted before the traditional locking mechanism will operate, which doesn't make it unable to be bumped, but does make it more difficult.

I know he didn't swallow them. In referencing the episode I was referring to the finding that it was the surface of the candy that caused the particularly sudden reaction. If you chew it up, you still get the foaming effect, but now that those little 'bumps' (can't remember what they called the effect) are no longer there, it won't be as sudden.

I'm probably wrong, though
Posted by: frog51

Re: Best videos. - 23/08/2006 08:54

Very easy to make blanks if you have a valid key - just find out the lowest valid height for each pin and grind them down to that level. Okay, some care is needed to ensure the peaks are in the correct place, but this is not insurmountable.

Posted by: wfaulk

Re: Best videos. - 24/08/2006 18:11

Rallying is virtually unheard-of in the US. The X-Games have been around a while as an "extreme sports" (skateboarding, freestyle BMX, snowboarding, etc.) outlet. This was the first year for a rally competition. I kind of look at it as if it were an exhibition for the US. I wish I'd known about it. I'd have liked to have watched it.

I dunno. I've never been of the Yngwie Malmsteen play-scales-really-fast theory of guitar playing. It may be technically proficient (although limitedly, in my opinion), but it's dull. I'd much rather hear someone play slow with more soul.

Do they have some sort of counterweight inline with the propeller that keeps them from spinning out at low windspeeds due to the torque of the propeller? Or is the mass of the propeller so slight in comparison to the rest of the plane?

The prop on the plane isn't turning backwards, the pitch on the prop is variable, like the blades on a helicopter, and like those stunts where the heli is flying upside down with a negative pitch on the blades, the plane is flying backwards due to negative pitch on the prop.

Yeah, good old Stanley. Any discussion of amazing guitarists, and he's pretty much the last word. There's a whole stack of other guitarists I'd prefer to listen to, but there's no denying the man is freaking amazing.

(I mean musically. I find certain other traditional guitarists more interesting just from a musical perspective. Stanley's technique and unusual all-hammers playing style is brilliant, unique, and masterful.)

Re: In the winter - look before you drive - 19/01/2007 16:10

Yeah, that was a popular video this week around here, since it was nearby and we had a lot of people getting in similar accidents. (King5, the logo on the screen, is a Seattle station.) Man that situation sucks.

Although I have to say, the ice storm a month ago was a lot worse for us. I guess Portland got hit bad with this last one.

It's like God keeps trying to nail someone in the PNW and keeps missing, so he's trying again each time. Hope he got his target with this last one, I hate getting caught in the crossfire.

I wouldn't say we got hit bad. It was less than 5 inches of snow. Really, that's nothing. A lot of people just don't know how to drive in snow here. They were requiring chains or traction tires in the city, and I'm just driving around, going... "why?" But then, the first time I ever got behind the wheel of a car was in the winter, on roads similar to that. (Amusingly enough, the only other person at work when I got there was a fellow who used to live in Alaska.)

To top things off, Portland doesn't have enough snow plows and sand trucks to be able to handle a snow storm like that, either. They keep all that equipment out at the airport (from what I heard), which means there's really only one way to get them into the city. Sadly, that one way was blocked by an accident. It was ludicrous that, by 11am, they hadn't been able to plow at least the freeways.

The snow is pretty much all gone, by now, however. The Portland winter emergency plan appears to be "wait it out." There was an article in yesterdays paper about this video. There were no significant injuries -- I think it said the driver of the car had to get a few staples in his head to close a cut, but that's it.

Did it say why he kept giving it gas? I mean, I could believe that it could be slippery enough so make it slide around like that, but when the car got to the row of other cars and kept pushing them, well, that's acceleration.

Something that isn't obvious by looking at the video due to all the snow, is that is a somewhat steep slope. Both of those streets are sloping down, that's why there's so much sliding.

That SUV wasn't giving gas when it hit those cars at the end of the street, it was just sliding down that hill.

Yeah, I think that's about the gist of it. I haven't yet been to the hill in question, but I do know that those other cars could likely have been parked rather precariously, unless they'd been parked there from before the storm hit. Unfortunately, I've already tossed the paper out, so I can't go re-read the article.

edit: Ah, found the article online.

It was 99% staged, there are quite a few clues, the most obvious being the dubbed shouting voice and stones at the end, and note there was no evidence shown of stone damage. Also the truck horn was dubbed too, it sounded far too clean (and the wrong noise too).

Also when Jeremy drives off in the Camaro you can see the film crew off to the right using a large heavy tripod, and not in any hurry to pack up. Finally (!) they probably had a police escort most of the time, I think some states insist on it.

I'd say it depends...

Are they highly fashionable and of a quality that means they'll be worn out in a couple of
months of use and make a cobbler mutter something about "unrepairable garbage"
in the unlikely chance of you trying to get them repaired (as you could still stomach the
thought of being spotted wearing them though they're no longer "in")?

Or are they something that, given a little care, can be repaired over and over and be with
you the rest of your life- and then inherited by your grandkids?

Re: Best videos. - 14/04/2007 15:20

No no... Extremely high quality alligator tail boots. They'll last QUITE a long time as long as I take care of them. My snakeskin's are in the shop now getting resoled, and they only ran $400 or so. So yeah, I plan on keeping and wearing them for quite a few years to come. In fact, until two years ago, I still had the first pair of boots I ever owned, and I'd had them ~15 years. The only reason they're gone now is that they sat under water for a week after Katrina.

As to comfort, nothing can beat a really good pair of boots for comfort. I pretty much wear boots every day. And when I say boots, I mean cowboy boots, just to be clear.
