Just wondering wether you can get the whereabouts of a mobile that's still on network in the UK. I assume the Police can do this, but is it possible for members of the public to do the same?

Wot a bugger, I've only just got it.....

Only if you have previously set up tracking on it, using one of the various tracking services. Even then it would only tell you roughly where it was.

As Andy says, not unless you've already subscribed to such a service and confirmed it using the handset.

Thought that might be the case. Mind you a rough idea is better than nothing. I'm sure it's in one of three places and they're all about 8 miles from each other.

The fact it's still ringing out makes me think no-body's else has it.

if you can talk to one of the engineers, they should be able to tell you which tower your phone is connected through. however, I doubt you'll be able to get this info...

So frustrating! I remember leaving the house with it in the morning and then by lunchtime at work I didn't have it. Looked round work, at home, Maplins, the corner shop..... nothing.

...and it's going to cost £100 to get it replaced.... turns out my phone insurance silently lapsed.

I sympathise, lost my Samsung D500 at the pictures (Curse of the Wererabbit), cost me over £100 to replace it with some dodgy purple Nokia piece of poo.

Woo hoo! Just as I'd given up hope I found it at the bottom of one of my bays. Must've left it there, and my incessant ringing made it vibrate itself off the shelf!

Needless to say I'm sorting out insurance and tracking for it now!

Gratuitous lost cel phone story:

I was in Chicago. My flight landed late and I was racing to a friend's place. There were huge piles of snow everywhere. The taxi got me where I wanted to go. I pay, the taxi leaves, and I'm half-way into the building when I realize my phone isn't in my pocket. Crap! I race back to the street and sprint up a 5-foot snow drift. My phone must have slipped out my pocket. The cab was gone.

I called my cel company and they helpfully deactivated the phone and I was probably going to be forced to get another. Then I got an email from the cabbie. When you turned on my phone, the custom message just said my email address. The cabbie emailed me and said he had my phone! He even mailed it back to me without charging me. I'm still amazed. Everybody should have their phone displaying their email address!

Treo's rock. I love that feature too, it gives you a little hope just in case that kind of thing happens.
