Streaming Radio Stations (Attn: dbrashear) - 29/11/2006 14:05

Really a question for Derek, but I thought it would be beneficial for everyone else, too. I've moved away from my favorite radio station, CD101 in Columbus. I can stream the station over the internet, it doesn't sound TOO bad, good enough for background music. If I do really critical listening, I usually get the CD and listen to it that way. I mainly use CD101 to find new music that I like.

Currently I'm using the web-based "listen live" link on the website which launches an ad window with an embedded application/x-mplayer2 stream. I have the mplayer plugin for Firefox (I'm running Ubuntu) and it will play for me but I don't see any title or track info for the stream. Is there a better way to stream the audio on Linux? Any other streams I should look into? I would love to get NPR also.

Well, I found the URL for the stream, and I can open it directly in VLC.

http://players.eonstreams.com/FastAim/Player/Play.php?PulseID=103132427&SecurityKey=32835

Or I think the real root URI is:

mmsh://mmslb.eonstreams.com/cd101_oh_columbus_wwcd_fm_fast

This helps, because I don't have to launch their webpage to listen to the stream, I can just listen to it via VLC. I don't get title or track info, though, which would be nice. I don't think it is supported in these streams, however. Anyone have a clue?

Is there any reason you thought it would have metadata? I don't seem to see it on the web page. Is it there for you?

The only reason I guess was that they used to have a "Now Playing" block in the title on their homepage and I was hoping since that data was available at one point that they would make it available via the audio stream. I used to run a Shoutcast server when I worked in the office and the title/track was streamed along with the audio. Wishful thinking, I guess. Since I use the radio station to find new music it makes it a lot easier to see who I'm listening to.

Plus I'm spoiled from the Empeg. Whenever I'm listening to the radio in the car I always keep looking down to see the artist and track that's playing - only to see a blank screen.

It's certainly technically feasible with the WMA streaming they're doing. They just don't seem to actually do it.

I scraped the url by snooping with tcpdump.

They used to have a frame with the track info. It broke. Now you have to get it from the cd101 music store, which is flash. Someday I will take gnash and see if it can play it, and if so I will do a stripped version which just does track info.

Do you get commercials? For a while that stream was dropping out entirely at commercials, and the one I posted had internet-only liners inserted over them, but they seem to have fixed that.

Yes, I hear the commercials. If you ever get the track info scraping thing going, let me know - I'd be very interested.

Wow, this thread is like a blast from the past for me. I was at OSU from 96-00, my only time in Ohio. I didn't know how much I missed CD101 until I clicked these links, so Thanks!

Fwiw, now at
mms://wmc2.liquidcompass.cc/WWCD?MSWMExt=.asf

And I need VLC to listen. I wonder if this screws up my stream-to-empeg method.

they finally broke it in the first week of June, and I have now been cast adrift for discovering new music.
