Best way to Upgrade my Macbook HD - 11/07/2008 13:45

My Macbook is full frown

Can't get rid of anything else so an upgrade is needed.

Done a lot of searching around but can't find a free solution to the problem of upgrading the HD. I have an external SATA USB interface, and I would like to copy the complete old drive to the new and then expand the partition to make use of the new space, I really don't want to reinstall everything.

Any one have any experience in the best way to do this ???

Cheers

I used SuperDuper and this guide to upgrade my MBP.

If it's Leopard, Time Machine. Basically stick in the Leopard DVD to boot, then check the Utilities menu for a Restore from Time Machine option.

Also, since you have an external enclosure for 2.5 inch drives, you can just clean install any version of OS X onto the new drive, then use the Migration Assistant to have it pull all your apps, data and settings off the old drive.

Spot on! Thanks guys!

I take it the basic process is format the new 320Gb drive and just copy the contents over with SuperDuper which also makes it bootable?

Also, for an alternative 3rd party tool, Carbon Copy Cloner also works well, and is free, since all it does (and SuperDuper) is wrap around terminal commands built into OS X.

My 320GB drive (which I connected via USB for the copy) was bootable when SuperDuper was done. I didn't have to do anything afterward but swap the drives.

I just put a WD 320Gig drive in my MacBook a couple of weeks back but I took the opportunity to reinstall OSX and leave out most of the extra stuff like languages and printer drivers and iWork trial, then just manually copied the few third party apps that I needed over, along with bookmarks and address books. Everything else is on a NAS.

I wanted the extra space to store FLACs without having to cart an external HD around when I take the laptop from the office to the lounge to connect to my Hifi.
